Opposition Leader Concedes Defeat Before Election

WA opposition leader concedes defeat weeks before election day

Nine News
Feb 25, 2021

Western Australia's Opposition Leader has conceded defeat, three weeks before election day.   Smiley

Zak Kirkup has admitted he won't win the next election.

"As I get around the state, many West Aussies are telling me Mark McGowan's job is safe," Mr Kirkup said.
"We have to acknowledge that, because I don't want to treat people like mugs.
"I'm not going to stop fighting, but I'm not going to pretend and make this election about something it's not."

A Newspoll released last week showed Mr McGowan's Labor Party ahead of the Liberals by a 68-32 margin.
If the election is close to that number, the Liberals would effectively be wiped out from Parliament.   Smiley

The losses would probably include Mr Kirkup himself, who holds his seat south of Perth by a less than one percent margin.
Mr Kirkup, 34, argued there needed to be Liberals in Parliament to fight for their local communities.
"Who represents you locally matters and only the Libs will stand up to make sure they fight for your community," he said.
"We also have to make sure there are as many Liberals elected as possible so that we can hold Labor to account with strong checks and balances.
"The future of our democracy is at stake."
Election day is set for March 13.

Whilst I agree with him, there is an issue of oppositions not tending to look at themselves when being flogged.

Take the ACT election.

Personally theres nothing wrong with having young people run for higher office its just that every one I see is an ex political staffer with no life experience.

Well - that's everything wrong... and even worse than Bob Carr's famous ability to run a mean meeting... can't recall his name, but a retired Major General who enlisted as a private said that confrencing never achieved anything.. just get on with it...

Carr's type of politicians think it's all about tea and scones and a good bitch...  FFS.... we need LEADERSHIP ....

Yeah, I have no problem with his age.

It's just that he doesn't know anything.

He has no idea how the real world works.

Young Lib and Young Labor are both the same - just a bunch of smartarse Uni graduates who think they know everything.

TBH, while I don't think much of the ACT opposition, a lot of their woes can be directly attributed to many Canberrans having a serious disdain for the LNP Federally (given what they tend to do to the Public Service).

Labor has made the ACT a very expensive place to live after 20+ years in power. And I reckon plenty would have rather the money spent on Light Rail, be directed elsewhere.

But voting for the LNP locally?

Anathema to most...

As for the comments about "we need more Liberals elected, so that Labor can be held accountable...", why not have a bunch of independents in the Parliament holding them to account?

Why does everything "Politics" in this country need to framed through a Lib/Lab duopoly lens?  Angry
