No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

This is a good take on it. They let it get run down so safety concerns support closing it for cultural reasons.

Or the other take is that the funding for NPWS has been comprehensively cut so they can't afford to maintain iti

I do that walk (it's not a climb) once a year. I did it for the first time with my family when I was about 10, and was hoping to do it with my youngest next year.

This walk is part of my cultural heritage.

So would you consider parts to be unsafe.,

No more unsafe than the old Pacific Highway if handled properly... you can't create of every part of the human territory a 'safe space'...

"Awright, you paratroopers!  Listen up!  There will be no more jumping out of planes due to safety concerns!  And no more rope climbing from you Commandos, got it!  Now get with it, people!!"

And a national park is a NATIONAL park - not the sole province of some tiny group... get with it, people!

UNfortunately this is the key here " if handled properly". NPWS can't account for that

Why should they have to - they are not yet a dictatorship....  they can only say - these are the basic rules, these are the facilities we have available in the event you get into trouble, and these are our procedures for ensuring we can find you if necessary etc... under no circumstances should they be dictating what people can and can't do.... and that old 'cost of rescue' doesn't really cut it - the majority of the costs are in 'standing costs' - i.e. simply having the facilities available for rescue EVERYWHERE in the locality, such as (up there) beaches, car crashes, covid (or mental asylum) breakouts from Queensland, missing dementia patients, etc...

You cannot say that the annual budget of Murwillumbah's ambulance service is taken up in Mt Warning rescues or that the Westpac chopper spends all day and night at Mt Warning... false figures...

A chopper costs more on the ground than in the air.... maintenance and upkeep on any aircraft etc is very costly.... but as I said about the firebombers - better to have them ready than not at all... even if they cost $11,000 an hour to operate with an enormous turnaround rate where there is water available... around here say ten minutes between drops given our lake system - that is cheap compared to the flashy one-shot 737 etc... and the Fireboss is only about $3000 an hour... with up to half the load... (sort of like comparing a Skyraider to a B-17 - Skyraider single engine on full combat load carried twice the weight of ordnance of a B-17)...
