Brought out the turntable again
Feb 3rd, 2021 at 10:25am

** I originally posted this on Sunday night but it got lost in the forum move to the new server **

Decided it was time to give the good old turntable a spin again after it had been "in storage" on top of my bedroom wardrobe for over 5 years.

This is a Linn Sondek LP12 that I bought secondhand in 1987 (paid about $700 from memory), it had a cheap arm and cartridge fitted when I bought it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linn_Sondek_LP12

Replaced the arm shortly after I bought it with a Linn Basik arm (which I still have in storage) then further upgraded it with a Linn Ittok arm in the early 1990's (cost me about $650 secondhand) and a new Ortofon MC30 Super moving coil cartridge ($900).

Here's a few pictures:

Turntable:

...

Outer platter removed and belt fitted:

...

Outer platter, mat and 45rpm adapter:

...

45rpm adapter (fits over motor pulley):

...

All my old record and stylus cleaning gear, plus a rare Goldring cartridge alignment protractor:

...

Bearing shaft on bottom of inner platter:

...

Bearing housing where inner platter sits, has oil in it:

...

Setup on stand (turntables like the Linn prefer to be on a separate stand but I don't have room, at least all the shelves on this stand all sit on small spikes in the corners:

...

The small box with the silver front on the shelf below the turntable is an Ortofon T-20 "step up transformer" to increase the MC30 moving coil cartridge level to the higher moving magnet level - the Denon amplifier at the bottom only has a moving magnet phono (turntable) input.

All I had to do when I was setting it up was top up the platter bearing oil a little, adjust the 3 point spring suspended subchassis to level the platter and arm board (both are attached to the subchassis) and check the arm height and stylus pressure, etc.

If I wanted to I could probably spend around about $10,000 bringing this up to the latest specification (but, I won't). The only upgrades I've done since I bought it in 1987 were new arm and cartridge, new armboard, new suspended subchassis, new clear lid and hinges and new suspension springs, nuts and bolts and grommets, etc. all in the early 1990's.

I always remove the outer platter and belt when the turntable is not in use to reduce belt stretching and pressure on the suspension springs. I also spin the platter by hand when turning the turntable on to reduce stress on the motor and belt (the platters are HEAVY on this turntable).

Haven't had time to play a record on it just yet. Might get around to it in the next few days.

Because its now a bit too much trouble to flip my Linn over and take a picture from underneath I've found one on the Internet.

Mine is almost exactly the same except I don't have the green circuit board, mine just has a regular terminal strip with a couple of capacitors to smooth the power.

You can also see the bottom of the main bearing housing just to the right of the green circuit board.

The arm board isn't attached in this picture, of course. The armboard and arm attach to the suspended subchassis on the end at the bottom of the picture (you can see the 3 holes where the screws are used to attach the armboard and arm).

Thanks, Sprint.

I checked the date of manufacture for this turntable here:

http://serial-number-decoder.co.uk/linn-sondek-lp12/linn-sondek-lp12.htm

Results for serial number 13634
This Linn Sondek LP12 turntable was made between 1974 and 1977

Not one of the first ones (1972) but still early enough.

Took a picture of the Linn Basik Plus arm (and armboard) that I've had in storage for probably nearly 30 years now. Wouldn't mind putting it back on and trying it out but its a lot of stuffing around, especially transferring the cartridge over and aligning it, etc.

Fascinating Carl... I still have a beaut turntable too, with cassette players  Smiley

As for record collection... I have many... from long ago, but also at the point in time cd’s were so “in” and vinyls were no longer wanted... that’s when I decided to start collecting ... $1 or $2 each, now on average are between $30 to $60 each.
I have some beauties... and a few are worth much more...

I just wish we kept our cars and motorbikes from them fab 70s... worth very little to sell then ..... but now... wowsers! Worth a pretty penny, we even had a Ferret Scout vehicle (without the turret) bought at an auction for $700 when all army surplus was being sold. We had fun with it... 1/2 inch thick steel it’s made of, and able to do 50 mph either forward or reverse.

Yeah we sold it in the 80s for about $3800 to a UK army general whom was collecting all old army stuff.
Had it shipped off to the UK etc

I’m not sure why I’m remembering all this... must’ve been your turntable Carl... triggering memories  Cool I guess anything music does that  Cool

Thanks, Lols.

These sorts of things do bring back memories, after getting the turntable out and set up again I'm reminded of a friend of mine - around about 1984 we used to ride pushbikes from the city (where he worked) to his place in Maylands on a few Sunday nights and he would have his brother come around with his turntable and we'd have the "Battle of the Linns". They both owned Linn Sondeks and they would be always competing with each other as to who's sounded better.

My friend had an awesome setup with his expensive amplifier and speakers and I'd sit there listening (and judging) while they made small 'tweaks' to their cartridge alignments and tonearm heights, etc., etc. and then playing a record to try and hear which one sounded better. Good times.

Their 'reference' LP for the testing and comparison was this (and they played it quite loud):

https://www.soundtrack.net/album/star-tracks/

Of course, I never found out what the neigbours thought about this seeing as my friend lived in a block of flats. Couldn't imagine them being too impressed hearing movie themes blasting through the building at 9 o'clock on a Sunday night.  Shocked

My turntable is working quite well, I don't have any speakers connected to my amplifier at the moment so I'm just using headphones but so far, so good.

...

Oh, and just for rhino:

...

Cool

I dont know if you ever go onto 2nd hand shops Carl, i do and the first thing I look at is the old records, occasionally these days i find something  worth having. In all the years Ive been collecting records there has always been one constant, the Kamahl records are always sitting untouched and unwanted, for years . No one wants them. Someone tried to give me a box of Kamahl records once at a deceased estate sale for free. I said no offence but just put them in the bin.

Haven't been into the secondhand shops for a long time but I do agree with you.

This Kamahl record is the only one in my vast collection and I've probably only kept it all these years because it has sentimental value for my aunt, of course.

Linn Sondek still rules !!!  Smiley

Haven't used the turntable for ages so I decided to have a bit of fun with it.

I've replaced the old Ortofon MC30 moving coil cartridge with an Ortofon 2M "Red" moving magnet cartridge, removed and rotated the Linn's 3 subchassis suspension springs and grommets and readjusted everything.

I took a rough guess when I mounted the new cartridge to the arm's headshell but when I checked the alignment with the alignment protractor it was spot on.

Levelled the arm in relation to the record surface, adjusted the arm for tracking force and anti skating (1.8 grams) after 'zeroing' the arm and cartridge - you get the stylus to 'float' on the record surface using the arm counterweight.

Sounds great, the moving magnet cartridge has a 'warmer' sound than the old moving coil... but moving coil cartridges were always renowned for sounding a little 'harsh' with the treble.

Hey Greg.

Yep, lots.

Here they all are in my wardrobe, lots of 45 rpm singles and a few 12 inch singles too:

...

First record I ever bought in 1974 (actually, might have been early 1975):

...

...

...

The 6KY DJ's names on the 3rd image are (in case they're hard to see): Jim Beam, real name was Errol Battersby - died in 2013, Mark Condon, Brian Lehman, Gary Roberts and Grahame Cherry.

I wonder if that record could be worth something today? It's still in almost mint condition.  Grin

Hmm, maybe not   Smiley

I have an original pressing of Sgt Peppers, in fairly good condition, and even that's not really worth all that much.

I bought it years ago from one of those antiques shops in Guildford - when CDs came out some guy sold his entire collection of records and I managed to get his Sgt Peppers.
