possible site downtime and lost posts
Jan 31st, 2021 at 11:12am

I am transferring the site to a different hosting plan. I have put in the request, but I do not know when it will start. There may be some downtime or lost posts. I'll keep you updated here.

Will this affect PA as well?  If so I need to give them the heads up.

How much notice, do you anticipate being able to give [to the site downtime commencing] ?

1/2 an hour ?

Hours ?

Or a day ?

If you can see this post, you are looking at the new server. Any posts you make now will not get deleted. It looks like we have lost posts made after about 1am.

I had something similar happen. It seems that the DNS propagation (letting the world know the the site's IP address has changed) varies depending on how you access the internet. So maybe some ISP's don't run updates as often.

I have been told to allow 4 hours for DNS propagation in cutover planning. The world should be up to date in 4 hours is the rule of thumb I believe. Some take minutes.

I reckon the site has been a little faster.

I did encounter the odd "down for maintenance" message for a brief period.

BTW ... was the old hosting site using https?

I notice this one is now "not secure".

I haven't noticed anything being slower at least. Did you change to nginx with the transfer?

Still with hostgator. They allowed me to downgrade to VPS and get the 75% discount.

It has never had https. Something on my todo list. I'm pretty sure it costs extra.

I've told you before it's free and you should implement it. It might even attract more posters from less than open countries.
https://letsencrypt.org/
I have no probs helping you implement it.

Edit: Remember you are trying to run a political site and every post is plain text to anyone that can see the traffic. Unless they've already got to you... Undecided and that's why you won't encrypt. Cry

The "Lock" symbol ...

Click on the address bar to see the https "s" for secure / encrypted.

It means the info you send to the site is encrypted, so if someone intercepts it, they cannot do anything with it.

Not sure what info exactly, as when I type in a post chrome tells me that the form is not secure, presumably meaning it sends it to the server as plain text. Presumably your login password is sent as encrypted data rather than plain text.

I think the info the site sends to you (web page content) is also encrypted.

If a website uses a secured comms setting (indicated by the lock ... or https in the address) ...

It means that stuff typed here is "encrypted" between your computer and the site, so "hackers" can't easily see what is transmitting between your computer and the site. It makes it a little harder for hackers to mess with things - although not impossible.

Correct. It's probably overkill for a public forum. Any hacker could just create an account here if that's what they really want. But it is becoming standard, and easier to set up.

It's not overkill because it really has FA to do with BA details, email addresses, etc, passwords that's valid. Governments listen, and some of them are not very nice, they don't like what their citizens may have to say. No-one in a country like that would post here without encryption, it'd be insane to do so.

I have also wound back the advertising to what it has always been, up until last year some time. No more popups or ads embedded in posts. Let me know if you still get that.

It certainly does, no-one knows who is behind the screen names ideally. If everything sent between the posters computer and your server is encrypted, govt can't peek. They can see you visited a site but not any discourse you may have entered into. For all they know you just read it. Even that can be added to by VPN where all they can see it traffic to your VPN provider. Encryption is good.

No thanks.  There are no Monk members at PA!  I can tell those I know of who are having problems but I can't do much about the others.

If I'd realised there would be a new link I would have informed them before the event.   Oh well.

FD should set it up for polanimal to automatically redirect to the https port.

Anyone can read, only sneaky govts know who posted what from their country. That is the whole point, protecting the identity of those in countries where their govt would not like their comments. No-one from the HongKong dissidents would post here for eg as their anonymity is compromised. The state would drag them away in the night.

That https-everywhere plugin will make your browser try HTTPS before going to HTTP on every site.

I'm also seeing "this form is not secure. Auto-fill has been turned off." My guess is there are hard coded HTTP:// in the code. This would not be a problem if every HTTP connection was forced to HTTPS.

Can you check the links of the blank ones? If they are also HTTPS it should not be a problem. Almost all problems I see changing to HTTPS are mixed HTTP/HTTPS.

Before Monk moved to the new software (which is great) there was the same issue at his Forum.  One had to add (or delete...I can't remember) an 's' to get a YouTube video to connect there.

Now...it is a breeze.  Just post the URL and the software puts up the video.  Magic.

There is some issue with redirects on the polanimal wiki that I cannot figure out. I also cannot add any redirects to the polanimal forum because then I get the same "too many redirects" error.

Good thinking!   They are all http as in order for them to show we have always had to take the s out of https before posting.   So I guess they're all lost.

EDIT:  Apparently people using Firefox can see them but not those using Chrome.

I may have stuffed up some people's access to PA. If they are getting the too many redirects error now, clearing the cookies should work.

I can't let them know.   I've told those I am in contact with outside PA but I can't notify the others if they can't access the site.

OK, found the issue for Youtube not displaying.

For Edge you need to go to settings and for secure sites, you need to allow insecure content on Ozpol.

Screenshot below to help. Also you need to add https://www.polanimal.com/ for those using PA.

I assume the same for Chrome since they are built on the same technology.

Actually, all of that could be wrong since I just noticed this site is no longer secure while I was testing.

FD you changed it back.

OK, it appears my approach changes the site to be insecure when I view Youtube, that is, when I view insecure content.

No issue. This works.

How do you tell if the permanent redirection is on?

I have sorted out the redirects on the PA forum and wiki, so they are all working. If I enter a URL without the s, it automatically redirects to the secure URL.

Well spotted.

I hadn't noticed that mark all read is faulty now ... looks like it works ... but if you refresh the page they come back as unread again.

Edit : Not working correctly in Firefox but does work correctly in Chrome?

Makes life interesting!

To view videos - I need to log in on Firefox, to mark all post as read I need to log in via Chrome.  Cheesy

Unread posts (well actually - topics with new posts - "should" show up with a blue "new" marker next to the topic heading.

So "Mark all read" clears off the topic blue marker is all.

No worries.

The issue now seems to be that in Firefox, that mark all read thingy isn't working properly, but at least videos show up in Firefox ... but in Chrome, the mark all read thingy is working but videos don't show up.  Sad

Yeah there is some issue with my Firefox, you can mark them as read but if you refresh the page all the previous unreads show up again,

Just realised you have mentioned this already!

FD several people are getting this more and more frequently at PA.   Then it double posts.

How do you tell if the permanent redirection is on?

I have sorted out the redirects on the PA forum and wiki, so they are all working. If I enter a URL without the s, it automatically redirects to the secure URL.

It takes human intervention in your.site.s apache conf file.

Something like:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R]

in the file that ozpol is defined in.

Edit: That would also need the apache mod_rewrite enabled.

I get a "too many redirects" error if I do this.

Code:
RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?ozpolitic\.com
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.ozpolitic.com/$1 [R,L]

Using your code exactly does not cause errors, but I am not sure if it is doing anything.

Code:
RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R]

I got this code from hostgator - have left this in place:

Code:
RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

(in the public_html/.htaccess file)

I cannot see any changes in behaviour, so I am not sure how to tell if it is doing anything.

What I posted will rewrite any http request to https, hopefully that should stop those messages on posting, text boxes, etc and is what I use.

I was hoping it would get rid of those "This form is not secure. Auto-fill has been turned off" messages but I do not know the code and why it's reporting that. My view was redirecting all http calls to https may fix this. It may not as I don't know what the code is doing to elicit these messages. I do know that what I use does work for my sites.

That message is probably a YaBB thing. The developers seem to have given up on it, before https became universal.

This is why chrome reports that message.

I thought forcing https through mod_rewrite may fix that but if it doesn't, I may need to download YaBB and look deeper.

The youtube thing is that the original post was make giving http as the link address. People should be able to "choose" to see them I would have thought but I haven't come across the problem myself, feel free to give me a link that shows this. If BO or yourself can post/PM me the error and anything from the log at that time that is relevant, I'll take a look. I don't go there so I have no idea.

I click on the last post feature and I do not get to read the last post someone wrote, sometimes. Is there some kind of minor error causing this?
