january 13.

never locked down sweden
3

its nordic neighbour,   rich denmark with far less migrants
37
  deaths

the UK,  locked down for the third time, traditional country pubs closed for 6 months and 50 % saying they will never re open, gyms, closed, construction closed in many places
1564
deaths

why do lockdowns continue with such devestating death tolls?
why are people being locked indoors to infect one another when

personal responsibility and virtually no regulations saves lives.

why have governments allowed covid fatigue to set in and allowed the immune systems of their citizens to be demolished by fear mongering and anxiety producing morons at the helm. Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

Sweden Finally Tightens Covid Measures After Being Slammed by Virus

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-13/odd-man-out-sweden-slammed-by...

Quote:
After taking arguably the world’s softest approach to handling the coronavirus pandemic, Sweden is tightening the screws.

As of Sunday, the government of Premier Stefan Lofven can fine and shutter businesses that fail to follow restrictions such as caps on visitors, as well as restrict private gatherings, under a new law that runs through September. It’s a departure from relying mainly on recommendations and trusting people to follow them. With the health-care system under increasing duress and deaths surging, some say it was too little too late.

“Like many places Sweden has learned about the virus the hard way,” said William Hanage, associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard’s School of Public Health in Boston, who has followed the country’s strategy closely. “Sweden was too slow. There was ample evidence from the spring, in Sweden and elsewhere, of what could be expected in the autumn and winter if the policy was not changed and these are the consequences.”

I'm glad someone like you isn't "at the helm" here in Australia - the hospitals would be overrun with sick people and we'd probably have tens of thousands dead from COVID-19 by now.

3 deaths sounds much better than the United Kingdom

You say they are tightening restrictions

Can you name 1 gymnasium
1 restaurant
1 hairdresser
1 tourist operator
1 coffee shop

That has been required by the government to close for 1 minute

I bet you can't say the same about all the other failed States in Europe Roll Eyes

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden, whose unorthodox pandemic strategy placed it in the global spotlight, reported a record number of COVID-19 deaths for a single day on Thursday, taking the total toll above 10,000, although new infections appear to be easing.

The country of 10 million inhabitants registered 351 more deaths since Wednesday, statistics from the Public Health Agency showed, and reported 6,580 new coronavirus cases, with the daily number trending lower since late December.

Some 10,185 people have now died in Sweden from COVID-19 since the pandemic began, it said.

STOCKHOLM, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Sweden has registered 17,395 new coronavirus cases since Friday, taking the total above 500,000 cases since the start of the pandemic, Health Agency statistics showed on Tuesday.

The country of 10 million inhabitants registered 234 new deaths, taking the total to 9,667.
The deaths registered have occurred over several days and weeks with many from the Christmas period being registered with a significant delay.

The statistics also showed that Dec. 17 was the deadliest day since the start of the pandemic with 116 deaths, surpassing a previous peak of 115 daily deaths set in April.

Sweden’s death rate per capita is several times higher than that of its Nordic neighbours but lower than several European countries that opted for lockdowns. (Reporting by Johan Ahlander; editing by Niklas Pollard)

It's actually quite laughable that Aqua is sitting here in Australia where he is sheltered from covid-19 thanks to the tough measures taken here.
Yet he is spruiking the policies of Sweden claiming they didn't have a lockdown (which is a myth, they had an unofficial lockdown) from half a world away.
Aqua is like a naive teenager who has been sheltered from the real world, whinging because he isn't getting his own way

In the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swedish national response continues to be an outlier with cases and deaths increasing more rapidly
than in its Nordic neighbours.

On Dec 20, 2020, COVID-19 deaths in Sweden had reached more than 8000 or 787 deaths per 1 million population, which is 4·5 to ten times higher than its neighbours.

It was always going to be the case that very success of Australia's virus policies would cause some people to say they were unnecessary.

Incorrect
Sweden had an informal lockdown which was just as damaging to the economy as a formal one. The difference being that people still spread the virus.
As a result Sweden had worse economic and health outcomes than it's Nordic neighbours

If you want a virus success story then just look at Australia and New Zealand

incorrect.

we have caused generational harm.

when a challenge occurs (in this case covid),  you take on the challenge (like sweden) in which case you build your courage or you shrink away from the confrontation (in this case australia) and you seek safety .

in the second case (australia) you are teaching people to hide from danger , like a frightened bunny rabbit.

maybe you think its good if australians behave like scared bunny rabbits and quiver in their burrows.

i think its a psychological catastrophe from which we may not recover

it leads to 'risk aversion"

success, entrepreneurship, success, initiative...all rely on bravely confronting stressors with a 'spirit of adventure"

the official European Union statistics agency, and the University of Oxford, shows that Sweden recorded 7.9% excess deaths last year compared to the years 2016-19, according to the independent health news site Dagens Medicin.

That means that the country had the 23rd lowest annual excess deaths out of 30 European countries -- lower than the U.K. (15.1%), France (10.4%) and Spain (18.9%). Sweden also has a lower number of coronavirus deaths per million than those countries, all of which have gone under strict lockdowns during the pandemic. Pointing to the recent excess mortality studies, Nils Karlson, an economist and political scientist who jointly wrote an op-ed last year in Foreign Affairs entitled “Sweden’s Coronavirus Strategy Will Soon Be the World’s,” is more optimistic.

“There was some recent figures showing that if you count excess mortality, Sweden is one of the best countries in Europe,” he told ABC News. Wink Wink Wink

wow,

italy back into its fifth lockdown,
depression fatiague frustration

germany suffering massive protests and civil unrest.

the vaccine seems only vaguely effective.

but NEVER LOCKED DOWN sweden where you are treated as an adult and asked to take responsibility for yourself continues on its path forward.

a strong happy resilient brave courageous country amongst a continent of chodes.

and LESS deaths per head of population then most of the european countries from covid.

and massively fewer deaths from all those diseases being ignored...heart, kideny, diabetes.

here in qld , the majot hospital for cardiac surgery, kidney surgery, qlds most highly accredited hospital.
our centre of excellence.

shut down and staff told to stay home and the covid ward closed for "deep cleaning"
Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes.

its a respiratory virus !!!!

eventually like the brave swedes, everyone will have to confront this.

sweden truly is the light on the hill

Brazil is swamped by new virus cases, with a warning to Australia that this variant is far more dangerous than anything seen before.
The new variant has overwhelmed the country to the point gravediggers are exhuming old tombs to make space for the more than 300,000 dead.
"The entire country has no ICU beds left. The deaths are soaring exponentially … like through the roof," Dr Eric Liang Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist from Harvard, told 9News.

if we had let the milder version that DIDNT affect kids sweep the nation 9 months ago, they would now have immunity.

thanks to our reprehensible bed wetting, we will now , quite possibly have a more deadly virus sweep thru a virgin population.

our cowardice may well cost the lives of our kids.

'Troublemaker for the next surge': Top doctor warns of new COVID-19 virus killing the young in their thousands

https://www.9news.com.au/national/coronavirus-brazil-top-doctor-warns-of-new-cov...

Quote:
As COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out around the world, a top doctor is warning of a new virus strain that is killing the young in their thousands.

I'll just repeat this part for aqua since he's always telling us that young people have nothing to worry about.

Is it finally time to start worrying, aqua?

if we had let the milder version that DIDNT affect kids sweep the nation 9 months ago, they would now have immunity.

You really think we have the power to determine which form of the virus infects us? Really? How does this work?

Herd immunity is also pretty difficult to arrange, except by vaccinations.

i'm all for vaccinations.

not at the snails pace australia is rolling it out.

have a drive thru like at maacas, jab and then sit in a car park for 30 minutes.
then off you go.

at the current australian rate, you are encouraging mutations and then you need to create a new jab and rinse and repeat.

not a concern.

we do that for the flu.

but this is now going to be with us , porbably forever.

so this idea of fortress australia is a crock of shiiiit.

people are going to have to accept some infections and hospitals are going to have to accept some admissions and you cant have the ludicrous situation, like you currently have in brisbane of the biggest hospital not taking on sick patients with a multitiude of other conditions just because of covid fear.

reduce the numbers (just like we do with the road toll), pat ourselves on the back, resume normal life and accept our mortality.

no more talk of the "catastrophic death of someone from covid'

unless you want to be talking catastrophies for eternity .

and , in 6 months, tear down the borders, open the airports and get on with "human flourishing"

And, we probably would have had tens of thousands of older people dead by now with no guarantee the "kids" still wouldn't be affected by this dangerous new variant.

Good plan. Not.

you seem confused, the idea was always to isolate Australia until we are vaccinated. No one has touted locking Australia up forever. You are following a very common path of making stuff up and inventing strawmen when your previous statements are challenged. So far you have claimed that somehow we get to choose which variant of Covid affects us and now you are inventing  a lockdown policy which doesnt exist.

USA have a death toll over 500,000 and are still no where near herd immunity

The bizarre part of Aqua's logic is that he is saying Australia should be more like Sweden.
But then he refuses to compare Sweden's death toll with ours, instead he only wants to compare it with the very worst countries in Europe.
Does Aqua even recognize the gaps in his logic?

Herd immunity is BS unless theres a vaccine that offers immunity and lots of ppl get it. Most of the vaccines dont even offer immunity. Even if it wasnt a fairy tale how many ppl would have to die to achieve it?

Angola has found a nasty new strain with over 30 mutations, cods:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00502-w

Quote:
South Africa’s first wave of coronavirus infections peaked in July 2020. The second wave peaked in January 2021, and was driven by the recently discovered 501Y.V2 variant (also called B.1.351). The variant is partially resistant to antibodies against previously circulating variants, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current vaccines against it.

And horseboy bleats about herd immunity—to one variant of the virus.

True, but hand washing/sanitising, social distancing, mask wearing indoors in public areas do slow and restrict the spread of disease. I do sanitise my hands and fill in the register in places that have them. Must get that app downloaded, speed things up.

I think soap is more effective than hand wash liquid. I bought a packet of soap and hunted up all the scented/hippy type soaps in the house. I use hand wash now tho—no soap scum.
