Sydney 'ladies-only' pool lashed for 'ban' on some transgender women

Controversy has erupted after the operators of Coogee's ladies only baths in Sydney's east suggested only transgender women who had undergone gender reassignment surgery could use the popular pool.

McIver's Ladies Baths, built in 1886, is Australia's only coastal pool to remain strictly the domain of females and children after the NSW government granted the baths an exemption from the Anti-Discrimination Act in 1995.

Overnight, the Randwick and Coogee Ladies Swimming Association, which operates the baths, attracted criticism for a response to a question on their website, which asked: "Are transgender women allowed?"

"Only transgender women who’ve undergone a gender reassignment surgery are allowed entry," the club stated.

The response - which has since been removed from the site - triggered opposition and confusion from social media users overnight, with one commenting on Facebook: "Genuinely, women's baths, how do you plan to enforce this policy? Will you be asking anyone you don't think looks sufficiently 'female' to pull their swimming bottoms down?"

By Tuesday afternoon, the club's website had amended the response to the question to say: "Transgender women are welcome to the McIver’s Ladies Baths, our definition for transgender is as per the NSW Discrimination Act."

According to the act, a transgender person is someone whose recorded sex is changed under law.

The club did not provide further details on how such a policy might be enforced, instead stating on Facebook that "entry to McIver's Ladies Baths is for women and girls (open age) and boys up to 13".

This response prompted further confusion, with one social media user remarking on the removal of the initial response: "Does this mean you have changed your stance and will accept all trans women? I hope so!"

But another user suggested the club's revised response - indicating they only welcomed transgender visitors who had changed their recorded sex to female under law - could still allow them "to ban pre-op transgender persons".

The club's website says the pool "provides a safe place for women of many ages, religions, and backgrounds" and "a sanctuary of healing, acceptance, and security".

The club directed requests for comment to Randwick City Council.

A spokesman said the council was "an inclusive organisation that values diversity in our community, and have always supported the inclusion of transgender women at McIver’s Ladies Baths".

The spokesman said the baths were located on Crown land and sub-leased to the association, who were "ultimately responsible for management and entry to the baths".

"It is our understanding the association has always had a policy of inclusion and we have been in contact with the management of the baths to ask them to more accurately communicate this inclusive position on the issue on their website.”

It's not the first time the issue of transgender women using the pool has stirred controversy.

In 2010, the Herald reported council rangers received complaints after a person who said they were in the process of becoming a woman, went to use the pool.

The visitor's two female companions had assured swimmers their friend was having hormone therapy.

A council spokeswoman said at the time: "The issue of allowing transsexual people, or people going through the process of a sex change, to use the McIver's Ladies Baths at Coogee is extremely sensitive".

"Someone may still exhibit male characteristics, despite having had a sex change," the spokeswoman said.

already male athletes are openly joining the ranks of female athletes  and are virtually gauranteed medals and noteriety for doing so.

if john millman cant win against federer, he can go into the registry and register as joan millman and pocket 6 million at the australain womens open.

there is absolutley nothing to stop him and the woke left would see this as some sort of victory.

Well Gordy I can't say that I disagree with it once again becoming a unisex pool ..... without the segregation that Muslims insist on.

Dressing rooms & toilets are another matter.
