Hawke and Keating allowed the Japanese to buy our farms with the recession Keating said we had to have.

Why is it a problem allowing Japanese or Chinese people to invest in Australia?

What are they threatening to do?  Put the land in their back pockets and take it home with them?

Grow up little children, there is no difference between British/American/Japanese/Chinese dollars, they are all dollars.  They all represent money we need to develop our country.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Would it have been in our national interest to lease out the Port of Darwin to the Soviet Union during the 60s and 70s?

It wouldn't have hurt us, if we had.  Darwin is literally a backwater.  Nothing major ever happens there (except on 19 February 1942).  The Soviet Union has no real interest in the SW Pacific.  Never has.  Darwin Port is a tiny fraction of Darwin Harbour.  It is the commercial part of the Harbour.  What exactly would the fUSSR do?  Darwin is thousands of kilometres from the rest of Australia.   Roll Eyes

Well, I'm sure there are reasons why a great power would want to lease a foreign port? What do you think China's reasons are?

Also, foreign investment from an enemy is different to investment from an ally.

China seeks to make money for it's citizens.  China plays lipservice to the term "Communism" and has since Deng Xi Peng came to power in the late 1970s.  The Chinese Communist Party is Communist only in name.  It is more an authoritarian organisation with only one aim - to remain in power.   Roll Eyes

I wouldn't describe China as Communist. They are Fascist. When economic power is rolled into the State, you get fascism.

China's game is global hegemony - the Chinese 'Communist' Party are like petulant children. They hold grudges, retaliate at the most minor things and spew absolute non-truths about anything. They also haven't gotten over the 'Century of Humiliation' and they want to punish the West.

I've seen Chinese people become fanatical over the HK protests - they're ideologues who think so critically about Western governments, but are so blinded when it comes to their own.

This regime is dangerous, and Xi's leadership has shown this to be true. This is not a stain on the Chinese people or their history; it's the regime that is to blame.

The CCP is the enemy.

True.

But they wouldnt have the CCP in power if the Chinese character was not so eminently suited to have a dictatorship in charge. They went from emperors to communists. They didn't  go fascusts only because Japan did first and invaded China.

I think the example of Taiwan shows that democracy is possible in a Chinese society, however the population of the mainland makes it more difficult.

China transformed into a fascist state when they adopted State Capitalism as their economic mantra. Of course, they'd never admit since fascism is the ideological opposite of Communism.

we dont like BULLIES!

Yes, it is.

Nobody wants to be like China. They are what everyone wants to resist. There is no future in being an emotionally incontinent, psycho bully. You cant go from forelock tucking, inscrutible, grinning opium smokers to respected power.  China is not an example or inspiration to anyone but dictators.
China failed every time it encountered the world and it will fail now. They are too ... whats the word?... oh yes.....Chinese. weird, they are too weird.

America will “will stand shoulder to shoulder with our ally Australia” as it faces enormous pressure from China, a senior member of President-elect Joe Biden has declared.

“The Australian people have made great sacrifices to protect freedom and democracy around the world,” tweeted Jake Sullivan, Mr Biden’s National Security Adviser.

“As we have for a century, America will stand shoulder to shoulder with our ally Australia and rally fellow democracies to advance our shared security, prosperity, and values.”

Joe has gone up a notch... Smiley

And not just the US. The EU, Britain, Canada, NZ, Japan, India also stand with Australia in the face of Chinese thuggery.

Nobody is actually taking China's side. At best they have cowered silence.

yes its good isnt it?...I just thought thats the first I have seen of a country putting it in print....I am thinking China may be just getting the message....

we dont like BULLIES!

Yet you seem to love the United States, Cods.  The US is one of the worst "bullies" that the world has ever seen.  It thinks nothing of running roughshod over other nation's if it wants.  It thinks nothing, normally of running roughshod over our aspirations if it wants.  Tsk, tsk.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

dunno where you get these weird ideas from.. certainly not reading my posts....if anyone has been down on AMERIKA   its me....and it goes for all side.. I am not a rusted on like you.. and can only see fault in one side..

Actually, I get them from reading your posts, Cods.  Only in the last few months have you apparently recognised the futility of backing el Presidente' Trump.  Roll Eyes

Quote:
which countries did you have in mind that the Yanks have run roughshod all over???????????......I know not everything has worked out the way they thought it would  but that doesnt mean the intentions were wrong......would you rather they which includes us sit back and watch our Communist chums take over smaller inferior countries that stand no chance without outside help of withstanding these vile countries...China - Hong Kong....Russia - Afghanistan..... who think nothing of riding roughshod over everything they want... Angry Angry

Well, there is a long history of America riding roughshod over other countries.  It deposed Mohammad Mosaddegh, the Prime Minister of Iran.  A democratically elected Government.  He tried to nationalise the oil industry.  Seems the Americans preferred the Shah.  Then there was Jacobo Árbenz, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Guatemala, overthrown by the CIA because he sought to undertake land reform.  Then we have Salvador Allende, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Chile, overthrown by a CIA backed coup.  There are numerous others, if you knew anything about the history of the Cold War, Cods.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Someone said we could not judge a person's Aboriginality on their skin colour.  Why isn't that applied in the matter of Pascoe?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
