It really puts the GOP in a tuff spot: if they push a new judge through prior to the election, not only will they look even more hypocritical (if that were possible) but several sitting US Republican senators up for re-election may not support this push and thus it would fail.

But the big risk for the GOP is this: should they actually confirm a new judge prior to the election and Trump wins but the GOP loses the Senate (which is looking likely), you can be sure that the Democrats will pack the court (which is perfectly legal).

What a load of garbage..

Trump is still within his 4 year term and well within his rights to select a new SCOTUS...

Thats what he’s elected to do - and to pick one that abides by the constitution..

So why did he say Obama couldn't replace Scalia?

I'm curious. I'm keen to hear what you think.

Inexperience. But after he became president he has come around to seeing things Obama's and Biden's way.  He is now agreeing with them. That can't be so bad.

Why didn't  Ginsberg resign while Obama was in office, I wonder. She's  had cancer for 20 years, a stent since 2014, and died at the age of 87. Judges are not like popes (although some would disagree) who need to die in harness.

That's a question, Agatha. The Mechanic won't say why Mr Trump is arguing the exact opposite of his case that Supreme Court judges should never be appointed in the last year of a presidential term.

And not just Mr Trump, McConnell, Lindsay Graham - Graham even said to quote him if he ever tries to change his mind. He was unflinching, he said, unswerving, unwavering on this point.

You?

Nominate a new Justice, Mr. President.

He can't do that, Mechanic. The Republicans don't believe in it, remember?

You know, like they don't believe in diverting military funds to build walls - or how they're committed to government spending surpluses.

Or, you know, how they think fallen soldiers aren't losers and suckers - that sort of thing. You?

Oh, that's right. You won't say.

You're still in mourning, no?

Yes, but the Republicans don't believe in that sort of thing, Auggie.

They believe in sticking to the rules, you see.

Give him time.

He's still mourning the death of Mr Trump's brother.

You know, the one Mr Trump loved so much that he devoted a full ten minutes to giving a eulogy for him at his funeral?

Ten minutes.

Sure, nine minutes were spent talking about how much Mr Trump's brother admired Donald, but the President is very busy (what with TV, golf, etc.).

If only his brother had worn a mask.

Oh well.

At the end of the day, if people don't want Presidents to make new appointments in the last six months of their office, then amend the constitution to stipulate this.

The Philippines have this provisions in their Constitution.

The Mechanic's a PATRIOT, Greggery. Of course he mourns the loss of his President's own brother. The Mechanic feels sorry for all fellow Americans who've succumbed to this virus, this terrible plague. Shocking thing, so sad.

Good thing the stockmarket's holding firm though, no?

If that were true, Auggie, they would be no more than hypocrites of the highest, most cynical, order.

And what would that make their supporters?

Face it Mech, you're on the wrong side of this one Smiley

There is no excuse for supporting allowing Trump to pick another one before
the election after what happened in 2016.

I think Trump welcomes this as a great distraction from Covid-19 -

get everyone talking about a new Judge.

Everything is a distraction away from the last thing for Trump.  COVID-19 was a distraction away from his wall failure and worsening job numbers and GDP which is why he'd transitioned to talking about the stock market, it was the only positive indicator he had left.

AbSolute garbage 🗑

You are getting as stupid as aia...

Over 300 miles of the wall has been built now and is working like a rippa..

Incorrect.

300 miles of the exiting wall has been repaired.

Less than 5 miles of new wall has been constructed.

And, Mexico hasn't paid a single peso.

My apology for the correction , tis a bit pedantic but they built no wall they have been replacing fence. I under stand it is about 300 metres of new fence.

Well yes, apart from blue states, of course.

But the Mechanic feels for his fellow dead Trump supporters, can we at least agree on that?

The leftards are ridiculous and not worth bothering with, but the Mechanic cares, Greggery. He's just too upset to comment on it here. It takes time to heal, you see.

We wish you well in your time of grief, Mechanic. You'll bounce back, you'll see.

One day, you'll be able to engage and respond with the rest of us, but until then, know this. We care.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, no?

That is why the democrats have supported the funding of border security since the 1960's much of the current repair work on the wall this term was financed under the Obama administration.
