Oh dear! That would be discouraging.

If you are going to stay on acreage I would say to buy some really nice apple trees and espalier them, keep them no more than 1800mm high.

Granny Smith
King David
Sturmer Pippin
Cox Orange Pippin
Golden Harvey
Calville Blanc d’Hiver.

The first and last are cooking apples, King David a low chill spicy-tart delicious eating/juicing apple, Sturmer Pippin stores quite well and the Calville a good French cooking apple.

Can make cider from them too.

I wouldn’t have an inkling of gardening or growing anything.
I tried, I’m bloody hopeless!
Some have a green thumb, me ... a brown thumb coz it all dies 🤦‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Except for rosemary, black rose and agapanthus!

Whenever anyone gives me a pot plant as a gift.... I cringe! Roll Eyes

I would rather a USB stick as a present.... yeah I know I’m strange 🤷🏼‍♀️
But practical!

Bummer!

Those varieties are useful and do not require lots of chill hours.

With the globe warming summers can get extremely hot.

Why not buy a birdbath and keep it topped up with water (can do even on a balcony, some  shallow plastic tub, a deeper tub with a brick in it) and put an empty icecream container full of water on the footpath? Empty, rinse and refill every day of the hot weather. Or leave a sprinkler going near the footpath (water restrictions permitting) with the water going no higher than, say, 15cm.)

Every summer some idiot leaves his dog or his kids locked in a car on a blazing hot day! As part of an attempt to measure CO2 in my car I noticed that during the day the car thermometer would be like 15°C cooler than the temperature inside the car as shown by the temperature reading on the CO2 meter display—so on a 40°C day it would be at least 55°C inside the car (could be hotter, these readings were taken in spring.) So do something for the dog(s) or kid(s) inside.

Arctic sea ice at record lows. just reinforces the bad news.

(Will try and remember to refloat this next summer.)

I had a bird bloodbath a couple of days back , I have too many ducks on my property so needed to cull a few, I put some corn out in the paddock the ducks came running but so did the cows I managed to get 3 ducks with the shotgun without hitting any cows ,  lol

Shooting 'ducks' is legal in NZ?

It sure is. there is a season and bag limits , These were domestic ducks , Indian runners , very cool ducks, but There were just to many of them

Yeah, critters can be nice but not if they eat our crops etc.

I did say that there was a category of pests.

Foxes eat newborn lambs.

One sheep farmer put an alpaca with his sheep. Instead of an 80% drop he got a 120% drop (so I was told.)

For packs of wild dogs—run a donkey with the sheep.

Horses can be quite aggressive toward dogs, I had a dog come onto the property and harass my sheep, one of the horses saw it off,

Was walking with my mutt in Browns Creek—it has a fork, we followed the left one until I saw the sign “Trespassers prosecuted, All dogs shot on sight” and decided the right fork was more interesting. Even a small terrier could cause damage to sheep—startling them into running etc.

Dog treated horses as
REALLY BIG DOGS
and kept her distance. Same with the black swans that live on part of the Torrens River in the city—tail firmly tucked in underneath and kept her distance.

Yes very true I found out, not all horses, but some really are.

My story from earlier about a mean horse ...

From a thread at my place (What animal will kill you in Australia) it appears horses kill the most people here!

I would be surprised if that was the case, I would think they cause a lot more injuries as people tend to spend more time around them , but cows would be the bigger killers per time spent with them, they are generally more aggressive "bulls"and territorial , having said that the previous owner of my property lost his eye from being kicked in the head buy a horse he was attempting to treat for a foot condition in the back paddock , you wouldn't do that with beef you would get it into a yard lock it down and tie its leg up, pound for pound cows are way more dangerous , Up there with large pigs, dont mess with them unless you know what you are doing,

I have a large white boar, I raised him from a piglet He is a good size now , I will not let anyone into his enclosure these guys can crush bones at ease, dont handle food then enter his domain as your hands smell like food to him and you are likely to loose a finger,
