Protesters Gather After Workers Assaulted

Protesters gather at Hawthorn East after workers assaulted    Huh

July 1 2020 News.com.au

Protesters have gathered outside a building site in Melbourne’s east where two workers were assaulted on Tuesday.

About 250 workers, mostly Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMMEU) members, took part in the protest on Toorak Rd, Hawthorn East on Wednesday morning.

Dozens of police were also at the site to ensure community safety.

The protesters, who came from different worksites across the city, chanted “the mighty, mighty union” while an organiser spoke to the crowd through a megaphone.

Union members have gathered across the road from where an assault took place in Hawthorn East.

Two workers were assaulted at a Toorak Rd building site on Tuesday.

The protest dispersed peacefully about 9am, and Toorak Rd between Auburn Rd and Kaikoura Ave has been reopened to traffic.

CFMMEU Victorian state secretary John Setka said the member support at the protest was greater than expected.

“These young officials were simply doing their job when met with an organised assault by a group of cowards,” he claimed.

“The attack was so violent, with one of the officials hit across the head with a lump of timber and knocked unconscious.

“We are all disgusted. The member support shown from all construction unions this morning was greater than we expected.

“However, we have all worked hard to keep our brothers and sisters safe, so we can keep the construction industry moving.

“To continue to do so, members have dispersed from the site to ensure their safety but will continue to demonstrate with a protest, adhering to the current health guidelines.”

CFMMEU spokeswoman Jan Meehan said the two workers injured on Tuesday were union officials and had given notice about their visit to the site.

That building site was closed on Wednesday, with police standing in a line along its boarded-up entrance. Two security guards have been present since midnight.

The CFMMEU said the protest was supported by the Building Industry Group, which is made up of several industry unions.

“They want to make a statement that all union officials should be able to go about their jobs without fear of being brutally and cowardly assaulted,” Ms Meehan said.

Who assaulted them? Scabs or paid ring-ins?

Man - it is getting ugly in Victoria... back to the good old days of pick handle negotiation... and it looks like the 'management' started it - or at least did nothing to prevent or stop it.

SCABS ON THE RAMPAGE!

It's because of the Unions the Virus has spread through Victoria from the lefty Protests.
Now that the Unions have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar behind Andrew's decisions.
The Unions are now starting to bite.

This is the start of the Australian Civil War.
This is the Eureka 'Yankee' Unionisms showing their true nature in Australia.

This is where the Confederate 'Federation Star' on the Australian Flag will rise to stand against this Unionism 'cock-up' as it's been labelled on TV. The Unions like to think that only their labour is allowed to work.
We'll show em that 'convict' labour is more than happy to work for their bosses - what with all the fringe benefits a Convict gets these days  Wink

Kennett and Latham must be also. They're the ones who also pointed the finger.

As much as the Victorian government would like to blame them..... nope.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/how-hotel-quarantine-let-covid-19-ou...

Quote:
In Victoria, just two months after quarantine began, in late May, the first infection of a security guard was made public. The guard had worked at Rydges on Swanston in Carlton. Now at least 19 guards and their contacts are infected from that outbreak. Even larger issues emerged from another quarantine hotel, the Stamford Plaza in Melbourne’s CBD, where an outbreak via security guards had by Friday grown to at least 35 people.

The ramifications are now being felt across the working-class and ethnically diverse northern and western suburbs of Melbourne, where more than 300,000 people have now been locked down for a second time to try to prevent the spread.

The government confirmed this week that genomic sequencing – a form of testing that outlines which specific variety of the virus is spreading in which clusters – shows that much of the latest outbreak has emerged from those original cases in hotel quarantine.

But, as I said yesterday, the ultimate blame lies with Australia having a "Clayton's" border closure - the border closure you have when you're not having a border closure.

If governments can order hundreds of thousands of people to stay home seemingly at the drop of a hat, then they should be able to have a COMPLETE border closure.

No-one in, no-one out. Regardless of whether or not they're citizens or permanent residents until the virus is under control overseas. That, or travellers need to be quarantined overseas (at their own expense) BEFORE they're allowed to come back to Australia (and then be quarantined again, just to be sure).

Wrong subject, Carl - what about the assault on workers on a job site?
