Just get organic matter into the soil.

I worked the clay soil on my block, then covered the rows with pea straw except where the trees are where I mulched with hardwood chips.

Everytime I go there I see more worms and other ground critters.

Can’t mulch a lawn I suppose, leave the grass higher and don’t use a catcher when you mow. Don’t use chemical fertilisers like superphosphate.

Should this thread be moved to Cats and Critters?

I get told not to worry about getting worms at this time of year. The ones that exist now will make their way out to the compost bin in their own time. I know that the tree is flowering better than usual. The compost bin is doing its job.

There we go, more critters, helpful critters this time, fertilise and aerate the soil. My Tassie block, 1200mm of reactive clay starting to turn into soil courtesy of these critters, encouraged by mulching. 35 bags of gypsum in the back half of the block also helped. Another 20 bags to go in later this year.

But worms do most of the work, I just give them a good home.

I have a composting bin. I do not really recall having success in getting the yard looking greener with using composting worms. I tend to move the bin from front to back yard depending on the time of year. I have the bin in the backyard for the summer. I have the bin in the front yard during the winter (now). I would probably go buy a starter pack once a year to top up the worm numbers in the yard. But, I know that they are gravitating towards under the house (under the foundation) to keep away from the heat. My compost bin only gets some sunlight for about an hour or so of the winter's day (and probably heats up that the worms don't survive).

My question is, should I even bother with getting composting worms? Or should I just assume that the worms that are surviving under the house are good enough to migrate to the compost bin for an extra feed at their own convenience?

If you want vermin, go ahead.

Yes, you'll go out one morning and find pissery, Benito, and aussie at the bottom of your garden........

Wouldn't that be ok the concern was about you digging in under the house ?

And the cats from next door love to patrol the yard. They had had good success in keeping the mice and rats to a minimum.

Anybody think there might be vermin like rats and mice in their garden—just plant some catnip (Nepeta cataria ) in your garden. It will attract plenty of cats.

Mum’s garden is overgrown and she has tons of tacky plant pots and decorative pieces. I am throwing as much junk away as I can so I can get a whipper snipper in there. Definitely going to plant some catnip!
