I'm having a really bad day with my TELSTRA [Bigp
May 29th, 2020 at 6:27pm

I'm having a really bad day with my TELSTRA [Bigpond] WiFi today.

Usually this happens once or twice a year.   [really, really bad!]

I'm 200km from my capital city.

And i can hardly load a web page [including an OzPol page] in my browser today.

Such is life, in rural Australia.

I just felt like having a grizzle about it.

That sucks. Our ADSL went out on the 26th and I phoned support, was told there was a problem and it should be fixed in 24h. Rang back the next day as ADSL still had no sync. Was told I had signed up to the NBN which was true and the ADSL was switched off which is false as far as my account page says. Anyway they told me to plug in the delivered NBN NCD which I did and connected up my ethernet to it kicked up PPP on my Linux box and away it went. The ADSL router I was using was in bridged mode anyway allowing my Linux box to handle authentication, get the static IP etc.

Today I received the router from my ISP that is set up to do PPP, wireless etc but I don't need that. I already have what I need, wireless, Cisco ATA(analogue phone to VOIP box) but because I'm not officially switched over I have no phone. On the plus side I'm still officially on an ADSL plan and getting 49Mbps down and 19Mbps up.

STATUS: My new nbn™ connection
xxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxx Lismore NSW 2480
Service no. xxxxxxxxxxx
Service type Fibre To The Curb
Service class 33
Data Unlimited
Speed tier Standard Plus nbn50
Order received by xxxxxxxxxxxxx 22 May 2020
Expected activation date -- To be advised
Technician appointment time -- To be advised
Modem dispatched
My service is active -- To be advised
Information needed. Hold or rejected.  -- To be advised

So as you can see the NBN is not supposed to be activated yet. Yippee for me really fast ADSL! Smiley The original ADSL outage is now not supposed to be resolved until the 2 June.

edit: Currently 8:30pm so it's the time for congestion and slowdowns but...

From what i've heard, a lot of folks would rather stay with ADSL, rather than transition to the NBN.

Grin

I have no experience with either.           Smiley

I went straight from dial-up, to wifi !    haha

I don't mind my trouble at all. In a way I got the NBN as promised, cheaper, faster, sooner! Grin

FTTC is VDSL, the DSLAM is in the ground out the front instead of in the exchange and powered by the NCD in your house. There is a mix in this NBN thing. I would have preferred FTTP but FTTC is g.fast capable but set to VDSL at the moment. Not much different to ADSL except where the DSLAM lives.

Do you still have the same problem when connected with ethernet cable?

I had problems with WiFi after NBN was connected yet no problem with cable connection, had to reset WiFi channel with modem to fix it.

New modem from Telstra connects me with 4G mobile network when phone line goes down which is OK.

Have to turn off NBN box and modem to reset to get it working properly at times this also fixes phone line.

I think, going from what he said about distance, is that he has a wireless plan, his data comes across probably the 4G network to his home and the wireless sometimes gets slow. Ethernet connections will only be local and won't help as the link that is the problem is the wireless that connects him to the world. IE not really WIFI more like the data connection your smart phone has.

hi baron,

I have a 'Netgear' wifi device about the size of a smart phone.

It doesn't have, or operate with, an ethernet cable connection.

I just connect/switch on, the Netgear wifi device, and my laptop [in 20-30 secs] will detect a signal carrier for my ISP [Telstra].

And then through [on] a browser page, i click to connect to the available network.

It is always slow.

That is just a function of my location.

And 3-4 times a year, i have a very slow day.

Some days' its best just to give it a miss, and come back, and try on another day.

'Such is life' ....in rural Oz.

.

Yes - I'm trying out a 4G modem from Optus.
I've only had it for 3 days.

It's working fast this morning:
https://www.ozspeedtest.com/speedtest-locations

Download Speed
123.79 Mbps
Peak 127.21 Mbps
Data Downloaded
154.95 MB
In 10.01 seconds
Test Run Date
Sat 30th May 2020 06:52am
Speed Test Server
Aussie Broadband
Melbourne, VIC, Australia

However:
2 mornings in a row I had to hardware reset the modem as it had stopped working overnight.
I don’t know why.
On an error log it seems that someone was trying to attack the Wi-Fi to get in.
Anyway I turned the WiFi off in the modem and I’ll see how I go in the next few days.
