The IDF is based on an armed and trained populace who are conscripted in the face of an existential crisis. Australia is not faced by such a crisis. We last had conscription in 1972 and it nearly crippled our society. We have a long history of being conflicted about the issue of conscription, lasting back to WWI. We had two bitter referenda on the issue and it was defeated both times. Around rolled WWII and we had an existential crisis, the Japanese were supposedly beating on our doors. We introduced conscription because of the threat it was allowed. After WWII, we let conscription lapse until the Tories brought it back. It was a waste of time and the conscripts spent more time cutting lawns or painting rocks. It was allowed to lapse again and then Vietnam started and conscription was introduced again by the Tories. It split Australian society.

No Government, Tory or Labor will touch conscription unless we are facing another existential crisis. It is a political hot potato. No one wants their hands burnt, not even Scotty from Marketing. China is not an existential crisis by a long shot. Roll Eyes

China is a military super power.
I don't think we could do anything to stop them
other than begging the Yanks to help us.
Even our new subs are at least 10 to 20 years away.

Many years ago, when i was a visitor, living in Israel, ....every male had to give about 50 days a year, to IDF duty.

[and i believe that system of yearly IDF duty, would still apply today, for every Israeli male ??? ]

The ADF does not have the resources to waste on training people who do not want to be there and who will be gone before any value can be got from them. Nukes are expensive, Red. Very expensive. As no one around the world is willing to sell us Nuclear Warheads, we'd have to develop, test and field our own. We wouldn't be popular if we were to announce one day we have our own nukes. Much easier to just ask the yanks if we can shelter under their nuclear umbrella. Much easier. Of course that means we have to have a few bases on our soil, which in turn makes a more likely target in an all out nuclear exchange. Pine Gap? It might be a nuclear target if the Russkies or the Chinese start shooting nukes at the Yanks. Not a good look, if you ask me. Now, Des Ball always believed that the Russkis wouldn't bother with downunder. I believe him. I doubt the Chinese have enough spare nukes to waste flinging them down here.

So who are meant to be frightened by our (mythical) nuclear force? The Chinese? They have more than enough nukes aimed from the USA at them. Indonesia? Hardly worth the bother. PNG? Again, hardly worth the bother? The Pacific islands? Another waste of time. New Zealand? They're our friends and mates! Who else needs intimidation? Roll Eyes

Oh, and Israel doesn't admit to having nukes - just for your information.
