The issue seems to be that the should have waited for the fisheries people to arrive and release the whale with less danger of death or injury to the rescuers and to the whale.  Doing it himself risked death or injury and he damaged the net.

IMHO it would have been impossible to free the whale without damaging the net.

yes I understand that  however he didnt know about the drone and people linging up to rescue the animal....

this guy is an experienced diver  I am sure it wouldnt be the first whale he has come across......he would have acted on the spur of the moment.....

for all we know bythe time fisheries had got their act together   the whale could have been dead.

I have spent a lot of time in the water and have only seen a whale close-up on one occasion.

The other divers would have probably done more damage to the net. The safest thing to do would have been to keep a distance and cut all the way through it, then hope the whale can free itself.

I freed a goat once that was tangled in a soccer goal net. I had to cut Billy out with a knife as the herd looked on confused.

no fine

once again Gordie goes of half cocked and embarresses himself

Is it embarrassing that you can't spell embarrasses?

ABC just reported what he said.

A recreational diver who freed a young whale caught in shark nets off the Gold Coast on Tuesday says he was instantly fined for his trouble,

the ABC also reported in your link that according to the fisheries minister he hdadn't been fined yet as an investigation was still ongoing ...

but you couldn't help yourself, you had to embarrass yourself   Grin Grin

if the whale had dived while he was trying to cut it free he could have found himself in a spot of bother.
