His big battery for Sth Australia was a useless con.

It was?  According to whom?  The same people who claimed renewables were responsible for the statewide black out?  Bullshit, it was a failure of the distribution system, pure and simply.  Renewables had only a minor part in it.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Ahhhh ..... the battery didn't come until after the infrastructure failure I'm sure.

At any rate it & the associated wind farm at Hornsdale are still just supplemental to the system.

And the system Sanjeev Ghupta is planning for Whyalla Steel will still need pumped hydro as well.

All this renewable infrastructure is extremely expensive & so far what it has done for SA is to give it the highest electricity costs in Australia ....

60% of it's power is still non-renewable generated by fossil fuel - GAS.

It still has diesel generators & buys in coal fired power from the eastern states.

When da sun don't shine the battery declines

When da wind don't blow da fan don't go.

So was it the distribution system pure and simple or was part of it the renewables?

Do you think this might have had something to do with it?

Yes ... after years of  maintenance neglect caused by privatisation/sell off of electrical assets, closing down all coal fired power stations & a storm... the system went arse up.

I believe the battery didn't come until after that.

Actually, the higher power costs can be laid at the feet of Alinta Energy.  They decided in 2012, rather than updating their power station at Port Augusta to prevent ash discharge and pollution, that it would be easier to shut it down and import the energy from interstate.  The State Government of the day, a bunch of Tories, decided not to improve the distribution system and not to built a second interconnector with the eastern states.   Renewables are actually cheaper than the traditional coal fired station was.   The blackout occurred because of the lack of distribution system maintenance and the lack of another interconnector.   It was not because of the renewables failing.  None did.

The Tories ultimately were the cause of the black out.  They sold the powerstation to Alinta Energy.  They didn't built the extra interconnector.  They failed to maintain the distribution system.   They are the culprits.

Now, Gnads, put that in your pipe and smoke it.   Roll Eyes

The battery arrived on the scene two-three years after the black out.  It is blameless.  It has performed the job it was designed to - keeping power even across the system.

Including the attendant battery backup? Wink
