Atlassian Geeks are tax dodgers

Anyone else sick of these geeks trying to lecture us?

Quote:
Tech giant worth $50 BILLION pays NO Australian tax but says that's fair because of its spending on research - while founder's help for bushfire victims could also turn a profit

Atlassian paid no income tax in Australia despite annual revenue of $1billion

The software giant listed in the United States has a market worth of $A54billion

Tech giant Atlassian paid zero income tax despite taking in more than $1billion in revenue, tax records have revealed.
Its Australian billionaire founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar are fond of telling the government how to tackle climate change.

The renewable energy they advocate is largely dependent upon tax receipts to fund government subsidies.

Despite that, Atlassian - with a market capitalisation of $54billion - has not contributed to that revenue.

The most recent figures from the Australian Taxation Office show Atlassian paid no income tax in 2017-18 despite having a taxable income of almost $138million from corporate revenue of $1.044billion.

The company, now registered in London and listed in the United States, claimed research and development tax offsets which meant it was left with no tax bill.

Mr. Cannon-Brookes, a co-chief executive from Sydney's ritzy eastern suburbs, also promotes renewable energy.

Mr Cannon-Brookes and his wife Annie, who live in the $100million Point Piper mansion, Fairwater.

Tech & Computer Giants will conquer Australia.
They don't pay Tax because they don't let Politicians dictate how to spend their money.
Sure they spend millions on Research, but it's research that suits their needs.
Weyland-Yutani is their motto.

Remember that massive Computer Social Game: The Island.
Where millions of people pumped money into the Game.
The Island was based on Australia - where all the 'Artists' come to Rule over.

They're just waiting for a signal to come.
And Australian Politics can't afford to stop them.

We need to be able to prevent this.     Our LAWMAKERS need to do THEIR JOBS, and to prevent this from happening.

When some deliberately avoid paying their share of tax,      public services and infrastructure are not funded, OR, other tax payers are made to pay more tax, to make up the difference.

Just look what rampant tax dodging has done, to the economy of countries like Greece [a few years ago] and Lebanon.  !!!!

The Neanderthals around here don't really understand that. The distinction between revenue and profit is far too difficult for some feeble brains.

I doubt sincerely that is the thinking, croc - they merely find it difficult to understand that this 'research' could be so costly when all they are doing is selling an established and running product... WTF do they need that level of 'research' for?

Easy to see that it is a rort pure and simple for the accountants to push across the table like a turd in a paper towel...

Tech companies need to constantly innovate just to stay in business.

So they charge the full cost of research to each individual nation they sell in?  Should only apply to the nation they build in.  Can't bite the cherry too many times... and as for researching the market - how can that cost billions? Ten stores in Australia that are already up and running??

How much 'research' does Toyota have to do here to see how its vehicles are selling?

Genuine tax system overhaul required.

I don't know how they work the accounting. Do you? The daily mail article does not appear to give any relevant information.

It will most likely be due to government's program of 150% tax deduction for research and development. So if $100 is spent on R&D it attracts a tax refund of $150. It won't be just research as the article alludes to either. They seem to have left out the "and development" bit. $138 million in R&D out of total revenue of $1billion and a market cap of $54 billion does not appear to be overly excessive.

How much does a software company really spend on research and development?

Since they're continually developing the product what do you think. Without software development we'd still be using DOS.

Yeh they only gave a measly 200k for fire relief when the others were writing out cheques for a few million or more !! Not bad for someone who both own a 100 million dollar mansion on the harbour shore Wink
