Petition—shopping aisles for Australian made
Apr 30th, 2020 at 7:45am

There’s over 15,000 signatures already, so please support this for supermarkets to have shopping aisles for Australian priducts only.
This makes it easier to know what is actually Australian made.  👍

They could at least explain why I should attempt to restrict buying to Australian made items. Until they can show a plausible reason I won't be participating.

Yes, true that. It's called comparative advantage.

Well we kinda need to get rid of our dependency on china - just like other countries suddenly finding they are no longer self sufficient

I would have thought the plausible explanation was obvious?

We are too reliant on Chinese products.

I believe the petition is about making Australian products available in certain aisles not about banning all imported products.

That's called being able to make a choice.

And  there is a lot of deceptive labeling on products as to real origin or country of manufacture.

i.e. the Kiwis buying in Chinese vegetables & repackaging as a product of NZ & the exporting it here.

Indeed.

So, should China follow our lead and buy only Chinese made?

I mean, if it's good for us then surely it's good for every other country too.

You should acquaint yourself with opportunity cost and comparative advantage. David Ricardo had this all worked out two centuries ago.

I'm totally cool with buying anything from anywhere in the world  when there is no competitive aussie option. Economies of scale etc make sense for production.

Food how ever for me is 99% (aprox) local only. I'll make exceptions for a few specialty items.

An Aussie made isle is a great idea not so people can ONLY buy Australian but to help with that choice.

Im just trying to answer the question of why we dont have a lot of aussie made available. We export to china and they import to us. i suspect they are more self-sufficient though.

They're not self sufficient in the goods and services where they have no comparative advantage. Same as us. That's why we export a shitt ton of food and minerals to them.

That's a relatively minor issue. It has more to do with the opportunity cost rather than absolute cost that determines production.

I try to buy Australian whenever possible, locally made is even better and I am willing to pay more for it.  However the big supermarkets don't make it easy. Australian goods are on the top or bottom shelves or otherwise made hard to spot while the foreign crap is front and centre.   Aisles for local goods is great in theory but may be hard to implement in practice as it would mean co-locating all different types, drygoods, meat, dairy etc.  Better to clearly label Australian goods and have them in the most accessible positions.

I don't think we need an aisle for australian made

we just need honesty with labelling

It shouldn't show the aussie flag or colours if it's not made in OZ
It should CLEARLY and in large letters say if it's made in Oz, or made from oz products.

Anything made with oz and imported products should not be allowed to advertise as aussie made

So the John Smith Sauce Co makes sauce from local ingredients except for 1 type of Chilli that won't grow here that he puts 1g of in each vat. John Smith can't put this in the Aussie aisle.

I reckon half the aisle would by all baby formula! 😁
Me also reckons the Chinese will love that aisle 👍

Remember Scotty saying there’s 3 times the amount of our population of food Australia produces?

So, today I went to Coles to find this high grade sushi stuff that they were supposedly letting into supermarkets at a discounted price because of restaurants being closed.

I asked at the deli, coz I’m looking looking looking... and I ask about it, no one knows what I’m on about. Get asked where did I hear it from.
I said it was on tv. Plus forum I’m on also mentioned it.

Then defeatedly I said, maybe just the inner city supermarkets not for us out here.

So, has anyone seen or bought any such specialty yet?

Newsflash!

Thousands of Australian children are becoming ill from consuming 'imported' foods and drinks. Parents are becoming mentally ill from using 'imported' goods.
Make a good lawsuit.  Wink

...but then there's the problem of 'cars'. We no longer have an 'australian-made' production.  Tongue

Remember Tricky Dicky Smith went for the Buy Australian agenda.

His products and other Australian products were very expensive in comparison upon this.

Many businesses and products will exploit the 'Buy Australian Only' with jacked up prices like a Petrol Station.

I think you have the wrong word, Gordon.  Australia is already an isle - an island continent in fact.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Wow, thank you Brian. It's truly amazing watching you display your immense intellect. Just one question though, is it an Aussie made Isle?

Funny how you leap to Gordon's defence, Set.  Funny how you won't do the same for me.  Makes me think you have favourites.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Where was I defending anyone? I thanked you for your incredibly insightful and educational post and praised your enormous and profound intellect. You didn't answer my question though, is it an Aussie made Isle?

You questioned my (mild) attempt at criticism of Gordon, Set.  That amounts to a defence.  Keep trying, it is amusing watching your antics as you make excuses.  Tsk, tsk.  Roll Eyes

If I was having a go at you, you know that doesn't have to mean I was defending Gordon's spelling mistake, that'd be a bit silly. Taking the piss out of your comment doesn't mean I was defending Gordon, they are not mutually inclusive.

If you think I was defending his spelling error, why didn't I defend him from this comment? See if you can tell the difference between that comment and yours.

John Smith can't put this in the Aussie aisle.

that's right. Surprisingly, you caught on quicker than you usually do

Nope. I dont think there should be an aussie made aisle. I think there should be an aisle for things made elsewhere. There shouldn't be so much non-aussie made stuff that aussie-made is the minority.

I just checked, when I put that petition up for our attention, there were over 15,000 signatures, now 3 days later there are over 19,500 signatures.
3 days for about 4,500 new signatures.

Will keep watch and update on this, but do these petitions ever get anything in place?
Anyone know?

Local products often cost more. Not always. It is easy to assume that a higher retail price attracts a higher profit. This is generally the case. Unfortunately, there are two things working against it.

The obvious one is that higher prices reduce demand.
The less obvious is that demand is reduced by opportunity cost rather than absolute cost.

Exactly.

I can't see it happening.

The real issue is that shoppers do not actually want products grouped by country of origin. They want convenience. They do not want to waste their time with two separate versions of the supermarket.

Especially when the Australian offerings like the Dick Smith 'Buy Aussie' era were more expensive with no proof of higher quality.

Only Australian Foods can get some sort of 'quality for price' justification.
But there are many Aussie products that are a rip-off and crap compared to overseas stuff.
Hell, it took a couple of school girls to prove that Ribena had  absolutely no 'Vitamin B1, B2, etc' as they stated in their adverts.

Maybe we need aisles that shelve 'Quality' goods regardless of country?

In NZ they have a chain that although expensive, give the consumer the choice to purchase 'good stuff' while those who prefer not to 'spend as much' enjoy the Pack n' Save style.

Exactly.

I can't see it happening.

I had thought of this, but realized that all packaged food comes in their own boxes labelled from where it comes from, so it wouldn't be so hard to distinguish Australian made products from those that come from overseas.

For instance, when on the 2nd last cruise, we did the ship tour, we were also shown where the refrigerated section was with all the foods in boxes etc.
I was taking an interest in reading where everything came from, it was all clearly labelled.
For instance, whatever came from the so many different countries, it actually intrigued me.
I wondered why so many different options from all over the place.
Then I saw something that amazed me even further, strawberries, came from my home place!
Wow, there you go.
And all easily locatable and where it came from, every cool store item of food stuff.
So I can't see why it would be so difficult for a supermarket.

No guesswork needed really.

Haha IGA are the opposite of bunnings. They are all different. Some of them arrange by brand which is extremely annoying.

Spot

my local is too small  two people in an aisle and its full...

not sure about brand arranging I dont notice things like that..

The petition is aimed at bigger supermarkets, such as Coles, Woolworths, and IGA.

There’s over 15,000 signatures already, so please support this for supermarkets to have shopping aisles for Australian priducts only.
This makes it easier to know what is actually Australian made.  👍

consumer boycotts rarely make much difference
It's easy to virtue signal on social media but in the end people aren't prepared to pay twice as much for the same item

They can be very effective. It is rarely the case that the alternative costs twice as much. The difference with buy Australia is that not many people actually care that much. Though it is enough for some businesses to stay in business despite being overpriced.

It isn't really effective across the economy, only individually. By paying a higher price it also has a higher opportunity cost meaning less available funds to be spent on other commodities. In the end, someone misses out.

The target company usually realises the error of their way pretty quickly, and their grovelling apology is accepted.
