The Covid-19 / economy balancing act
Mar 25th, 2020 at 3:35pm

As with most things in life our reaction to the Covid-19 situation isn't binary or black and white.

At one extreme we could carry on business as usual and simply accept the death toll of mainly aged people.

At the other extreme we could all be forcibly put in isolation and the world economy allowed to crash

Most governments reactions have been somewhere along the spectrum between these 2 extremes. Although Western Democracies have tended towards the isolation end of the spectrum.

Which ever way this turns out Governments have to walk a knifes edge between saving lives and saving the world economy.

The death toll is only one part. The bigger problem is that if we leave corona to run rampant, our health system will simply collapse.

That's right.

That's why we need to flatten the curve.

So far the heartless self-interested capitalist Rightwing reactionary xenophobes have chosen to save lives over their economic and business interests.

Strangely, being xenophobic is what will save us

We are keeping foreigners out - how xenophobic is that? but we have to be like that, pity it took a virus to do it

There are other reasons for keeping foreigners out also, home invasions, bashings, and killings in our streets

From now on, all foreigners should be thoroughly checked before entering Australia

A philosophy of being very cautious of external threats of all kinds is required forthwith

The Media belongs to Team: Oceania, Asia, Europe, Africa.

Politics belongs to Team: Namerica, Sahul, Samerica, Middle-East.

...as you can see Military belongs in the latter team too, thus China's 'Military' is definitely behind 'enemy lines'.  Wink

Now Medicine belongs to the former team and thus with the Media's help: they have scuttled the Political/Military empowerment and Economies with their 'Virus'.

Been a while for that Team to gain some ground after their fell flat on their faces attacking a President on his home ground.

The World has been fertilised like a Black Man's seed in a White Woman and the cell is splitting like an atom.  Wink

We seem to have succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. The curve isn't just flattening, it's actually dropping.

But where does that leave us?

Will we continue with these level 3 restrictions that are crippling our economy until the vaccine is widely available in maybe 2 years?

Any politician who lifts any of the restrictions will be told by their opponents that they have "blood on their hands"
However, 2 years of these restrictions won't just lead to economic problems, it will also lead to mental health problems

^^^    New Zealand is going for complete elimination, however they have the advantage of a smaller population and land mass.

Yes. New Zealand should beat Australia to the punch as the first 'cleansed' nation. The cities and towns are small like Hobbit Holes.

New Zealand is a part of Oceania afterall. Australia being a part of Sahul. Media looks like it's on a winner with this Medical stuff, more than it is with Politics and 'filtered' Wars.

New Zealand should go for it! Being Oceanic, you don't need to prove anything to us Sahulians. You don't have to play 'little brother' across the ditch (that divides). You can do this for yourselves - for Oceania! Something no Australians can steal from yas like Pavlova and other stuff.

They understand that not doing this will be worse for business interests in the medium term.

It isn't a balancing act, there is nothing to balance - it is fix this or so many people will die that there will be no economy to save.

There will also be deaths due to a lockdown.
There will be more suicides, much more DV and much more depression.

We would be in a full lockdown with doors being welded shut if that were the case.
Instead we can go out to work, we can go out to exercise we can even go out to buy jigsaw puzzles.

I suspect that privately the government is disappointed that new cases are falling. It means that this paralysis could last for months, even 2 years until a vaccine is widely available.

The problem is that no one knows how this will play out

NSW has already said that many of the restrictions will remain until a vaccine is found. I suspect the other states will follow suit.

Somewhere a junkie is screaming in their isolation - unable to go out and get their over-due fix.

It's interesting that there is even a spectrum of responses on this forum

There are those such as Aquascoot, mechanic and Richdude who believe this is all a hoax and conspiracy and that these are just regular deaths being labelled Covid-19

There are those such as Nails and Bobby who are hysterically fearing it will wipe out half the worlds population.

As always the truth lies somewhere in the middle
