Australia's Rich Keep Getting Richer
Jan 22nd, 2020 at 4:16am

Australia has slightly fewer billionaires, but their wealth is still increasing says Oxfam

Updated Sun at 6:26pm
ABC

The world's 2,153 billionaires have more wealth between them than 4.6 billion people. AAP: Dan Peled

Australia's rich keep getting richer, with the top 1 per cent of Australians having more than double the wealth of the entire bottom 50 per cent — or more than 12.5 million people – according to Oxfam.
Key points   Sad

Oxfam's pre-Davos 2020 analysis of inequality found Australia's billionaires grew their wealth by an average of $US460 million from 2018 to 2019
But the number of billionaires in Australia decreased from 43 in 2018 to 36 in 2019
Globally, the wealthiest 1 per cent of people in the world have more than double the wealth of 6.9 billion people.

Oxfam's annual list highlighting inequality has found the number of billionaires in Australia decreased from 43 in 2018 to 36 in 2019, but that the number has more than tripled over the past 10 years and the value of their wealth is still increasing.

The report, being released ahead of the 2020 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, found that the wealth of Australian billionaires, who are mostly men, grew by an average of $US460 million from 2018 to 2019.

Oxfam Australia chief executive Lyn Morgain said the top 1 per cent of Australians, just 250,000 people, owned nearly $US1.6 trillion — equating to 22.2 per cent of the nation's wealth.

"This concentration of wealth in the hands of the super-rich is occurring while the share of wealth of the bottom half of our community has decreased over the last decade and workers' wages continue to stagnate in Australia," she said.

The world's billionaires, 2,153 people in 2019, have more wealth between them than 4.6 billion people.   Sad

The report found the richest 22 men in the world own more wealth than all the women in Africa.

Global inequality 'shockingly entrenched'

At a global level, inequality was "shockingly entrenched and vast, often affecting women and girls the most", Ms Morgain said.  Sad
Australia's 10 richest:

    Gina Rinehart $15.3b
    Harry Triguboff $9.3b
    Anthony Pratt $7.2b
    Scott Farquhar $7b
    Mike Cannon-Brookes $7b
    Frank Lowy $6.5b
    Andrew Forrest $5.4b
    John Gandel $4b
    James Packer $3.6b
    Lindsay Fox $3.5b

(Source: $US, based on 'real' wealth, Forbes Billionaires List, February 2019)

"The wealthiest 1 per cent of people in the world have more than double the wealth of 6.9 billion people.   Sad

"This is not fair or sustainable."

It said the monetary value of women's unpaid care work globally, for women aged 15 and over, is at least $10.8 trillion annually — three times the size of the world's tech industry.

Oxfam's report cited World Bank figures showing almost half the world is trying to survive on $5.50 a day or less.

According to Forbes' Billionaires List, the world's wealthiest man in 2019 was Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with an estimated fortune of $US131 billion.

He was followed on the Forbes list by Microsoft's Bill Gates ($US96.5 billion), and US investor and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett ($US82.5 billion).
Call to collect more tax from wealthy and multinationals

Oxfam said taxing an additional 0.5 per cent of the wealth of the richest 1 per cent over the next 10 years is equal to investments needed to create 117 million jobs in education, health, elderly care and other sectors to close care deficits.

Ms Morgain said Oxfam had calculated that developing countries lose an estimated $US100 billion a year in tax revenue as a result of tax avoidance by multinational corporations.

OECD push for a global minimum tax
Well over a hundred countries and territories agree to an OECD proposal to revise global tax rules by 2020.

"Given the state of inequality in Australia and abroad, and the context of worsening climate-related disasters, such as the bushfires, the Australian Government must ensure that multinational corporations are paying their fair share of tax," she said.

"This would boost public funding to allow it to provide better services to all Australians and better respond to disasters, both here and across the world."

Ms Morgain called on the Federal Government to introduce publicly available country-by-country reports on the tax affairs of multinationals and to introduce a public register of beneficial ownership of companies and trusts.

Globally, there are also calls from economists and others to introduce a global minimum tax on companies worldwide.

Oxfam's report is based on data from the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook, published in the second quarter of 2019, as well as the Forbes Billionaires List published in February 2019.

Excellent.
We now have a faction of our Society that can be 'contenders' against the Rich of other Nations.

Our Banks are pretty potent too!

Hooray for our Rich!!
One day we might become a Super Power just from Wealth!
Not bad for a bunch of poor convicts eh?

Last night I read that if someone were to count from zero to one billion without taking a break for food or anything else

and counting a number per second

it would take almost 36 years

Acknowledged

but it won't occur unless they're compelled

and who would compel them?

who could?

So it's back to the adage: 'The rich get richer and the poor become poorer'

always been the case

Not as if the French Revolution put one extra franc into the individual hands of the poor

People don't ask much, just that they are able to work for pay and support themselves on that pay

we all know the rich enjoy more but most accept it with the occasional envious glance to the rich when the bills come in

without a means to earn a living however, the occasional envious glance turns into hatred

but even then, what can the poor do?  Riots are quelled, people die, but it's not the rich who die

About 29% of the world's adults (about 1.4 billion people) own 97% of the world's wealth, while the remaining 71% of the world's adults (about 3.4 billion people) own the remain 3%.

To be one of the 29%, all you have to have is $US10,000 or more in assets. So there is a good chance that most of the people on this forum make up the 29% who own 97%.

Google "global wealth pyramid".

Not necessarily. The $7 billion refers to wealth which includes assets. It doesn't refer to cash in the bank. It is reasonable to expect that most of his wealth would not be tied up in low yielding cash but asset classes with higher yields. If he wants to convert it to cash he would need to liquidate the assets. Sometimes this is not possible at short notice, especially when contracts and partners are involved.

I realise that idiot Nails wouldn't quite get that but surely not you too.

It's written somewhere that those who have access to medical, education, clean water, food, assistance, have a roof over their head

comprise the top 8% of the world's population

Australians are in the top 8%

even if they live under a bush in a park, they are amongst the top 8% because if they care to avail themselves of it, they will be treated by doctors, they can receive welfare and housing, etc

Given that governments insist on cutting company tax and for Australian government to pay company tax to people who pay no tax in franking credit gift...its certain the gap between the rich and poor ever increases.

How is it 'affecting women and girls more' when there are billions being affected?  Oh, I'm sorry - this is like my mad brother always whining that I 'got everything' while he got nothing... I worked 100+ hours a week and he sat and smoked doped and talked poo... when we were growing up, with three siblings, he reckoned I got 26% and he got 24% of next to nothing...

DUH.... anyone else sick of hearing how women and girls are always supposedly worse off in any situation?

Note the big difference here?

Hint - all the girls have shoes and good clothes... most of the boys are barefoot..

The rules need to be changed downwards. Corporate tax incidence is borne mostly by labour rather than capital.

if you combine the paretto principle (a law of the universe ) with technology, you are going to see redistribution amplified.

this is hardly surprising.

the top 1 % is not a static cohort.
in 50 years , it will be a different set of people at the top

BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A TOP.

all systems create inequality.
capitalism is a miracle because along with the inequality, it also creates 'wealth".

no other system does that.

so kneel before your refrigerator and weep tears of joy for capitalism

Of course we do - it's just that the extra wealth is measured in how much you need to spend to keep going in the economy ...

Economist:  People are spending More!  the economy is booming!"

Worker:-  I'm spending more on my basics while my wages are not keeping pace - the economy is dying."

An economy is a tool to serve the nation and its people - it demands  a fair distribution and fair recompense for effort.... but when we have an entrenched policy of one in six un- or under-employed, and active discrimination afoot to suit several social groups only... well... the economy becomes a weapon of social war of various kinds...

Untrue grappler.
The " basics" have never been cheaper.
The price of groceries, bread, milk, meat, chicken has increased way way way less then wages.
The same is true for electricity, cars, telecommunications.

Everything is cheaper by comparison with , say, 30 years ago allowing for inflation .

But you have a lot more stuff.
You probably have a flat screen or 2
Movies on demand.
Air con and a car with air con.
You have much better health care.
Carpet
Better dentistry
You might holiday in an apartment, not a tent.
Your kids have phones and tablets.
Immunisations.

You live a way more privileged life then someone even a few decades ago.

Bounce out of bed and spend 10 minutes meditating on the wonders of running drinkable water and a flush toilet

I know. First introduced to the British by the grandson of Edward Longshanks. He allowed the 'people' to 'invest' in his successes. As did once Julius Caesar. As did Religions. As did Ramses II with ART.

But remember what you all were as Australian - before this tear in the fabric of space and time has created the Great Australian Divide between Rich and Poor. Did the Rich get Richer or did the Poor just fall down and let them? Australia: the Highest use of Drugs per ratio of Population in the World.
Just a case of getting Gold like Stephen Bradbury?

Remember being apart of that Lucky Country where everyone was more or less equally egalitarian?  Huh

Jasin, there is nothing wrong with some redistribution from the top.
That's what our tax system does.

But Denmark, Germany, France and Sweden have all tried a wealth tax and just ditched it because it doesn't work.

Remember this dictum

" you'll never go hungry eating the crumbs that fall from the rich mans plate"

How do you get some of that cash off of a rich guy?well you can try jealousy and resentment and that won't get you far.

Here's a thought.

Be nice to the guy.
Offer him some value and he will probably look around and see that he is going to die, his son is a druggie, his wife is having an affair, and giving YOU heaps of cash for being the one person who treats him with respect warms his heart.
That's what I'd try.
And I bet you that would work

Midnight oil are a good case study.

Initially they probably had zero cash, slept in seedy hotels, could barely make a living.

They could have said " this is too hard, my life sux, I'll cheer myself up with some drugs, I'm too beaten down to write any songs, smack it,
I'll go online and complain about rich musicians."

They could have done that.
They could have rationalised that story.

But they didn't.

They kept pushing.
They got down, elbows deep in the mud.
They toiled
They struggled
They got a little bit of success,
They churned that money back into better sound engineers
Into promotions
They got more success.
They kept working.
No drugs cause they had to tour
A new town every night
Tired and aching ear drums but they kept on going
Then more sales, more publicity, gold records, more cash then they dreamed of, now they don't even have to work, live off the royalties.

That's how life works.

You keep crawling thru the mud and maybe you make it.

You give up, become beaten down by life, sooth yourself with alcohol and become bitter and resentful and then you get to lead a life of " pure garbage "

I know that sounds harsh, but I look deeply into most people's eyes and they are done. Their dreams are shattered and they are just trying to cope.
Just trying to " get thru the day". Complaining is the consolation prize for being a failure

Coping mentality.... I might write a book entitled " coping mentality"

midnight oil used very shrewd capitalist tactics.

whilst constantly producing songs like 'dreamworld", "blue sky mining" "beds are burning' etc, which all championed the poor and the oppressed and the aboriginal disadvantage and the environment,

they were busy selling albums, concert tickets, eventually getting into parliament for those fat pensions, opening stores in byron bay.

like so many intellectual lefties, they convinced the public that they were not part of the rich oppressor class by virtue signalling whilst being members of the rich oppressor class.

its a smart move.

it throws fat steve and his mates off the scent.

you get to appear virtuous whilst still joining the 1 % rich pricks.

the left give people like garrett a free pass.
they give hawke and rudd and gillard  a free pass.
they give hollywood fat cats like madonna and clooney a free pass.
all these dudes are stashing the cash behind the smokescreen of virtue  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
maybe they could extend the courtesy to trump who is playing exactly the same game .
actually trump is at least authentic.
he just owns being a rich prick and doesnt pretend to care about poor mexicans and the oppressed .
he is "less" of a hypocrite

Huey Long said this in the 1930s... well, except the gap is wider now.

“Much talk is indulged in to the effect that the great fortunes of the United States are sacred, that they are built up by the honest and individual initiative, that they were honourably acquired by men of genius far-sighted in thought. The fact that those fortunes have been acquired and that those who built them for the financial masters have been impoverished is sufficient proof that they have not been regularly and honourably acquired…”

“I find that the Morgan and Rockefeller groups alone held, together 341 directorships in 112 banks, railroad, insurance and other corporations, and one of this group in an after dinner speech …asserted that 12 men in the United States controlled the business of the nation.”

No, I get wealthier each year. And so does almost everyone else. Nothing to do with individual increased spending. In fact many things are getting cheaper.

Not the price of housing, rent, utilities, healthcare, child care, food or many other basic items.

The items that are more likely to fall in price are discretionary items.
