The General "another retailer collapses" thread

Because it has been happening quite a bit over the last year, and will continue happening:

Quote:
'Retail apocalypse' could see 170 stores close across country

With bricks and mortar sales plummeting to the worst level since the 1990 recession, retail experts are warning as many as 170 stores across the county could be forced to close in the coming year.

Queensland University of Technology retail expert Dr Gary Mortimer said the so-called retail apocalypse has left hundreds of jobs hanging in a balance.

"Job losses are concerning. We have 170 retailers slated to close only two weeks into of January this year," he told Today.

Dr Mortimer said the biggest issue is with retailers not properly responding to market changes.

"We've seen a lot of market changes in Australia over the last decade, with global fashion retailers entering the market base and Aldi almost 20 years ago," he said.

"We have consumer changes and too much choice out there in the marketplace."

Dr Mortimer claims brick and mortar retailers – particularly large department stores like Myer and David Jones - have lost their point of relevance by focusing too much on discounting to combat online shopping.

"In the '40s, '50s and '60s, department stores formats were great. We would go there to buy whitegoods, stationery and clothing.

"Now, we go to category killers like Officeworks. We have global fashion retailers like Zara and H&M here where we buy our clothing. There's not a lot of reason to go into department stores."

Dr Mortimer added giants like Amazon and Aldi were also making it increasingly harder for smaller businesses to operate.

"If you are running a retail business which is competitive, you have to have a great online presence," he said.

"Bricks and mortar store are more difficult. You must pay staff and rent, and you have to try and recover those costs at pricing point that everyone agrees."

While mainstream fashion stores are feeling the brunt of the retail apocalypse, Dr Mortimer said there were some positives.

"I look at Coles and it's opened 140 smaller format stores. There's certainly sectors of retail that is going well. Jobs are obviously going to move to those categories," he said.

It's the wonderful thing about capitalism.

It's the death and rebirth story.

All businesses eventually fail.

You have to keep your eye on the ball or as I like to say " pay attention"

It reaffirms all the things I believe.

....that you can never rest on your laurels.
....that there is no such thing as the golden years
....that you have to love it when it's hard
....that you have to see pain as "weakness leaving the body" and challenges as an opportunity to watch your competition get demolished.

What is happening to bricks and mortar retail is entirely expected and only the "wilfully blind" management would not have seen this coming.

And that's what's so cool about capitalism
It is the " evolutionary blowtorch"
You see challenges as opportunities for growth and you go up
Or you see challenges as opportunities to be a crybaby ( oh , us poor retailers, boo hoo, I think I'll cry, i think I'll complain to the government)
In which case you cease to exist and you are demolished and rightfully so.

Failure is the norm
Garbage is the default.
Pay attention
Get down in the mud
Love it when it's hard
And never think you can cruise

Some small shops will survive, if they operate the store themselves, and keep an eye on bookkeeping.
Some will struggle depending on what they sell.
Do we really need another shoe store? Clothes store? Etc.
The big chain stores are feeling the pinch due to either people doing their maths work to see where it’s better shopping and more bang for their buck, and why not.
There’s increase shopping online now, and also op shops and garage sales.
Surely it was sensed this collapse of retail stores was going to happen from ages ago?

There’s also a lot of “pop up” shops which mean more affordable marketing for the seller. If there is a loss to be made, it won’t be a lot and won’t sink them into desperate financial lows.

There’s also a lot of warehouse sales from stock not sold in normal retail front shops.

And, there’s also markets. Heaps of them. With sellers having small stalls and won’t break their bank with overhead expenses such as electricity, wages etc.
If presents are needed, it’s either plants or alcohol I mainly see given.
When people need to pull the purse strings tight, all excess impulse buying will be a thing of the past.

So where do most forum members on here, do their shopping?

It wasn't the Communists who ate one another - it was the victims of Stalinism - that virulent form of despotism masquerading as socialism...

Do some more reading.... under capitalism many people have done desperate things to stay alive as well.. that's why every reasoned society has a mix of capitalism and socialism.

Being as I've been up and down to Taree finding materials and delivering supplies to burn-out victims, I sussed out a few good spots to shop - up in the 'houso' area - butcher and fruit and veg... and even in Newcastle a fruit and veg+ whose owner goes to the Sydney market himself and picks his stuff... good and cheap and not kept for an eternity in the cool room after being picked green..
