After the recent terror attacks in the United States and Western Europe, as well as Iraq and Afghanistan, it would be easy to conclude that the world is becoming more dangerous. The politicians and media have contributed to our growing sense of unease. Donald Trump claims that crime is rising, while Hillary Clinton speaks of a gun violence epidemic. Both, as Nick Gillespie shows, are inaccurate. In reality, many kinds of violence have become less common.
In the United States, the homicide rate fluctuated between 6.2 and 10.2 deaths per 100,000 people between 1967 and 1998. The rate dropped below 6 per 100,000 in 1999 and below 5 per 100,000 in 2010. The U.S. homicide rate for 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, was 4.5 per 100,000—the lowest since 1963. That means that the U.S. homicide rate is now at a 51-year low!
Very true. What's your source?
Dr Steven pinker
Pinker points out a number of very interesting facts
the infant mortality rate for the whole of Africa is now the same as what it was for Europe in 1960
90% of children now get a needle at 1 year old
We have halved absolute poverty in the last two decades
We have never connected people to the power grid and to running water at a rate higher then we are connecting them in 2019
Abuse of children
Capital punishment
Sexual assaults are all on the decrease
New York city is now one of the safest cities on earth
New York has had to close 2 of its prisons because it just can't find enough people to reside there
All-in-all our marvellous capitalist market driven systems are an absolute miracle
We don't notice it of cours
Humans are hardwired to only notice things that aren't working
And so we neglect the fact that our houses hardly ever collapse
That we nearly all have a refrigerator with food in it
Most people can't remember the last time they went to bed without an evening meal
This is incredibly rare as a situation
The law of entropy means that if we don't continue to do and support the marvelous capitalist system that has given us this miracle it will almost certainly disappear
The fact that the uneducated and ungrateful population have a soft spot for marxism reflects that ignorance of the utopia which capitalism is creating
