More slush fund rorts for regions

Audit office blasts roll-out of Coalition’s $200m regional jobs and investment program
Quote:
Ministers declined to fund 28% of grants recommended by officials, and approved 17% that had not been recommended to them

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has blasted the administration of a $200m program rolled out by the Coalition after the 2016 election to boost regional jobs and growth, with a new assessment uncovering substantial administrative shortcomings.

The audit office ran the ruler over the government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Packages after complaints from Labor that grants were being heavily weighted to electorates held by the Coalition, creating the possibility that the program was inconsistent with the commonwealth grant guidelines.

Tasmanian cafe and Victorian bike path breach Coalition's regional grant scheme

Labor to target government over $200m program after auditor general’s scathing report

A new cafe development in a key Tasmanian marginal seat and a $1m mountain bike path in Victoria were exempted from co-funding requirements under the Coalition’s $200m regional grants scheme in breach of the program’s guidelines.

One of the projects, in the marginal [Liberal] seat of Bass in Tasmania, received $365,000 for the total cost of a new cafe development on Flinders Island despite the department advising the ministerial panel the applicant had supplied “limited evidence” to support their case.

In another instance, a mountain bike club in Gippsland [a Nationals seat] was awarded almost $1m for a new bike track and was exempted from providing matching co-funding even though its application was not properly assessed.

Nope ... Rorts for Regions and Marginal Seats is a staple of Coalition governments.

Here's ANOTHER blatant Coalition rort:

A 'dodgy' government sport grant scheme
Quote:
Key marginal electorates including Eden-Monaro, Dawson and Boothby received twice as much funding as the average seat under the Government's pre-election sport grant program.

The Community Sport Infrastructure scheme, which came to prominence after a novelty cheque was presented by Liberal candidate Georgina Downer — rather than the local independent MP — is currently being investigated by the National Audit Office.

The Government has declined to release an electorate breakdown of grants, but ABC analysis of hundreds of announcements available online and on social media — representing more than $90 million of the total $100 million pot — shows a bias of funding towards marginal seats.

No matter how badly you think this government is doing, remember that on May 18, the Australian people decided that Labor would be worse...

Remember, voters can get voters' remorse. When the voters realise just how wasteful and corrupt this government is, the Coalition parties will be going to the electoral gallows at the next election.

It was truly an ACT of GOD that saved Australia from a FATE WORSE THAN DEATH when GOD acted to tell the voters to shove Labor into the garbage bin. And it was all an answer to ScoMo's prayers.

Labor's six sick years of waste and disgrace and shame won't be forgotten for decades. Especially their RESTART the BOATS!!!!

And another regional slush fund, this one is a clusterfk with drought funding:

Moira Shire misses out again on federal drought funding after being told it was successful
Quote:
Key Points:
* Nationals MP Damian Drum has said he 'jumped the gun' in October and should not have announced that Moira Shire would be receiving federal drought funding
* It is the second time residents of the Moira Shire have been learned they missed out on the $1-million Drought Communities Program
* Drought Minister David Littleproud has announced a review of the program, stating no further councils will be announced for the grant until after January

More porkbarrelling with drought funding. Why do drought-declared regions in Labor and independent seats miss out?

Pork-barrelling drought funding: A new low for the Morrison Government
Quote:
The Morrison Government is promising funds for drought relief, but a closer look reveals a severe case of economic mismanagement, writes Belinda Jones.

AUSTRALIANS HAVE ALWAYS had a very proud history of rising to the challenge during adversity, of digging deep and helping our mates – particularly our farmers – when times get tough.

In our wide, beautiful, sunburnt country of sweeping plains and flooding rains, the conditions are often very tough. Tough conditions bring out the very best in people and, on occasion, they also bring out the very worst in people. This is such a case. The Morrison Government appears to be playing politics at the worst possible time, at the expense of drought-ravaged communities, by pork-barrelling drought funding.

Another one ... using the excuse of "drought funding" to provide more pork for private schools while government schools get nothing.

Government schools excluded from Coalition's $10m drought education funding
Quote:
Government schools will not be eligible for $10m in new education funding announced in Thursday’s drought package, prompting the teachers’ union to argue the measure is elitist and unfair.

The Australian Education Union’s president, Correna Haythorpe, said it was “another slush fund for private schools” on top of the $1.2bn Choice and Affordability fund for Catholic and independent schools, which also included money for drought-affected areas.

On Thursday the education minister, Dan Tehan, announced the Coalition would provide “$10m for schools that are impacted by drought so that they can provide relief to families” – modelled on its response to the Queensland floods – and an extra $5m for childcare centres.

The rorts just keep on coming.

Regional grant scheme: business awarded $750,000, then goes bust six months later
Quote:
Off Road Camping Accessories may have been trading while insolvent when it received grant under Coalition program

A camper trailer company in the marginal seat of Gilmore was awarded a $750,000 federal government grant at a time that it may have been trading while insolvent, Guardian Australia can reveal.

The grant, awarded under the regional jobs and investment program that was subject to a scathing report from the auditor general, was given to Off Road Camping Accessories, based in the NSW south coast town of Moruya, to develop a new type of composite panel to be manufactured for camper trailers.

Under the requirements of the grant scheme, applicants were required to spend a matching amount to the government contribution, with the guidelines emphasising the importance of leveraging investment from the private sector.

But six months after the company’s $1.5m project was announced as successful under the program’s business innovation stream, Off Road Camping Accessories was placed into administration and the company’s 50 employees were made redundant.

The company was sold for $580,000 to Eagle Outdoors in November, which has since re-employed some of the workforce.

And ANOTHER one. Rort! Rort! Rort!!!

Bus and ferry project that received $1m Coalition regional grant delayed and 'losing money'
Quote:
Queensland business one of more than 200 recipients under regional jobs program criticised by auditor general

A company that received a $1m grant from the Coalition for a ferry and bus project had not been in the transport business, is currently the target of deregistration by the corporate regulator and is “losing money”, with the director saying the project is unlikely to happen for at least two years.

Dindarr Pty Ltd was one of more than 200 companies to receive federal government grants under the Coalition’s regional jobs and investment program, which was the subject of a scathing report from the auditor general released on Tuesday.

The $1m allocated to Dindarr was for the Yarrabah Ferry and Bus Project in Queensland, which would connect the Yarrabah Indigenous community to Cairns by “fast, low-cost ferry and bus services”.

Under the program guidelines, applicants were required to provide co-funding towards the total cost of the project, which in Dindarr’s proposal was estimated at $2m.

The Dindarr director Peter McAllister told Guardian Australia he was not aware of the “concerning” strike-off action under way by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and said he would “have to fix that”.

He also said that he had not been required to show he had $1m to match the federal government grant.

Instead, he said he had been required to provide a letter from an accountant that said he was trading profitably in a different business, and that he would have the ability to access finance through this company.

When will the Coalition's regional rorts stop?
