A Vietnamese man who spent five months in Malaysia awaiting documents to travel to Australia has spoken to the ABC about his ordeal.

Until last month, he was trapped with 37 other people from Vietnam in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur — all of whom had been promised safe passage to Australia and a job once they arrived.

"They said that it's easier here [in Malaysia] and I would not get my Australian visa if I submitted my application from Vietnam," the man told the ABC.

Citizens of most other ASEAN countries can travel to Malaysia without a visa. Once there, a passport can be fraudulently obtained in Malaysia for as little as $1300, according to Malaysian national security expert Andrin Raj.

Those ASEAN countries include Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, whose citizens come under far more scrutiny when applying to travel to Australia than those from Malaysia.

This combination of an easy passage into Malaysia and an easy way to obtain false identification makes Malaysia the perfect staging ground for people smugglers, according to former Australian Border Force Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg.

"It's a system that's corrupt inherently," Mr Quaedvlieg told the ABC.

The boats were basically stopped when they took power and as far as drownings go people are just as dead if forced to drown somewhere else. It wasn't a coincidence that when the Boats stopped coming here many more drowned else where. All that we managed to do was force the traffic onto more dangerous routs.

What is the present responsible Government doing?

A Border Force operation in 2017 located 288 illegal workers, and more than 300 individuals were refused entry to Australia.

This year, the ABC reported border officials were refusing entry to 20 Malaysians at Australian airports every week.

Airline liaison officers are also preventing people from boarding flights in their home countries — six Malaysian women were stopped from coming to Australia in August. They went holidaying in Thailand instead.

These officials operate at check-in and boarding gates to detect and prevent travellers coming to Australia through fraudulent means.

In 2018-19, 1,730 people were prevented from boarding flights to Australia, a 128-per-cent increase on the previous financial year according to the department.

However, Daniel Ghezelbash from Macquarie University warned this approach created a "perverse" system that punished those who sought to claim protection early.

"The system incentivises asylum seekers to withhold their request for protection until after they make it through customs," he said.

"If they apply at the airport, their visa is cancelled, and they have far fewer substantive and procedural rights, including only having access to temporary protection visas.

"If they can step foot outside the airport and apply, they get far more rights and protections, including access to permanent protection visas."

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton played down the problem of airport arrivals compared to boat arrivals in June.

"If you've hopped onto a plane, you've got travel documents. We know who you are," he said.

"We're able to work with Interpol or the country of origin to determine whether that person is a threat. We can look properly at their backgrounds.

"We don't have people drowning on planes coming in to Australia."

Logically, it doesnt stand up to scrutiny. You people need to stop falling for this media fabricated nonsense and start using critical thinking.

A Vietnamese woman has been deported for failing to declare more than 4.5 kilograms of pork, as authorities rush to protect Australia from African swine fever.

Biosecurity officers banished the 45-year-old from Sydney on Saturday after 10kg of squid, quail and cooked pork products were found in her luggage.

“If you are travelling from an African swine fever country – we are watching you,” Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

African swine fever is an incurable disease which kills pigs but is not harmful to humans.

Senator McKenzie said Australia must protect its disease-free status, with swine fever decimating herds as it sweeps across Asian nations.

The minister also thanked Suki – a Darwin-based biosecurity dog that polices flights from Dili after the disease was found in East Timor.

She also had a message for visitors coming from nations affected by African swine fever.

“Please don’t ask for your favourite meal, don’t ask for your favourite meat treat or don’t ask mum to cook you her favourite sausage and bring it over in her handbag,” Senator McKenzie said.

“You will be subject to the full force of our biosecurity regime because we are not going to take any risks with our agricultural platform, our pork producers and letting African swine fever into Australia.”

Dutton to use medevac powers to deny refugee entry to Australia

The Home Affairs Minister will use his powers under the contentious medevac legislation to refuse to allow the father of an asylum seeker to accompany her to Australia for medical treatment.

The 21-year-old daughter will travel to Australia from Nauru for psychological assessment.

She has reportedly refused to travel without her father.

Peter Dutton tabled documents in parliament detailing his decision on Wednesday regarding the father, whom he alleges would expose the Australian community to a serious risk of criminal conduct.

Under medical evacuation laws, doctors can recommend asylum seekers held offshore be brought to Australia for treatment.

They can generally be accompanied by family members.

However, the Minister can reject transfers on national security grounds.

Mr Dutton has approved the Iranian woman to travel, along with her brother.

However, he has received intelligence that the pair’s father had a history of violence and was allegedly involved in drug importation and prostitution.

Mr Dutton told parliament on Wednesday the man had a history of violent and manipulative behaviour, including allegations of physical assault against his children.

Labor home affairs spokeswoman Kristina Keneally said his decision proved the so-called medevac laws were working as they should.

“Why did Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton claim people of bad character could be transferred to Australia under medevac when it’s clear they have the powers to deny such transfers?” she said.

“Peter Dutton is so desperate to distract from the 95,000 aeroplane people who have arrived on his watch, he’s boasting about using a power Labor ensured was in place to keep security threats out of the country.”

The Morrison government wants to scrap the refugee medical evacuation laws, which were passed before the May federal election.

It has previously warned the laws will lead to a flood of asylum seekers coming to Australia from Nauru or Manus Island. However, in June, Mr Dutton conceded “only just over 30” refugees had been brought to Australia under the legislation – fewer than came under old laws during the same period.

The Coalition has been lobbying Senate crossbencher Jacqui Lambie for her support to repeal the law.

Senator Lambie has said the deteriorating situation in Syria may prompt her to support the repeal.

A Senate Inquiry into the legislation will be handed down on Friday. However, the Senate will not vote on repealing the law until it sits again in November
