The truth of Australia’s history has long been hiding in plain sight.

The stories of “the killing times” are the ones we have heard in secret, or told in hushed tones. They are not the stories that appear in our history books yet they refuse to go away.

The colonial journalist and barrister Richard Windeyer called it “the whispering in the bottom of our hearts”. The anthropologist William Stanner described a national “cult of forgetfulness”. A 1927 royal commission lamented our “conspiracy of silence”.

But calls are growing for a national truth-telling process. Such wishes are expressed in the Uluru statement from the heart. Reconciliation Australia’s 2019 barometer of attitudes to Indigenous peoples found that 80% of people consider truth telling important. Almost 70% of Australians accept that Aboriginal people were subject to mass killings, incarceration and forced removal from land, and their movement was restricted.

Were there parallels between the murderous Nazi/German campaign against the Jews of Europe and what had happened in Australia and was still happening. Further, were there similarities between Nazi racial theories and those subscribed to by most Anglo-Australians which had produced in Australia a history of genocide, and Anglo - supremacist attitudes that were the foundation blocks of the Federation of Australia?

But now the 'World' is open to them - many go on to more 'international' cultures like a new walkabout. Sure they might forsake their 'traditional culture', but they are still Aboriginal by race and blood.
Is an Aboriginal by blood, being Aboriginal by 'culture' if they take up a role as an Airline Steward or a Doctor (given the opportunity?).

So you took their land. But you pay them money so they too can have a chance to integrate with the Global Culture or even the Political culture of the British.
Money does grow on Trees and the Aboriginals sure did have a lot of it to go around.

So keep 'paying up' or are you going to walk through the shadow of death and USURP all rights owed to them and take the land, without paying.

Of course they are, Jas.. they go walkabout in jeans., boots socks and flannos with jackets and Akubras... and in a Land Cruiser...

They don't live the life - they play at it.... with some dancing and stuff, and pretend it is something special.

I, for one, didn't 'take their land' - I bought and paid for mine... nothing to do with me how it came to be available for purchase... just the way things were and are... get used to it and bring your Aboriginal mates along for the ride...

You can't seriously expect people who traded in good faith according to the rules to pay for some alleged theft of something never 'owned' in the same way - and still not 'owned' in that way.

Making a big to-do about 'resumption' of Ammaroo cattle station was a lie - all that happened was an agreement to co-exist, and for the station to continue - in other words - a way of paying the Aboriginals local for the right to use the land... they still don't own it in the traditional sense.... repeats.. traditional sense... they never 'owned' land... just moved upon it ... and they can still hunt and fish there... nobody's stopping them...

As for ridiculous claims for compensation for 'spiritual damage' at Gove - they've been paid and handsomely already for that..... should've thought of it when they signed away the rights to derive minerals for a few pieces of silver.... caveat emptor, innit?
