Sweep S.E. Queensland
BRISBANE, August 14.
-
Hundreds of square miles of drought-stricken South-east ern Queensland were aflame
tonight. From Bundaberg to the border bushfires, driven by south-westerly winds, were menacing homesteads, stations, property, stock, and army buildings and destroying the last remnants of winter feed.
The major outbreaks have been at Kilcoy, Woodford, Beaudesert, and West Burleigh. Here police, soldiers, and civilians have been unable to control thc fires, "which have burnt out thousands of acres of grass lands. Mt Archer, in the Kilcoy district, was a 1500 ft torch tonight as a fire, which began at Neurum, swept over it in the direction of
Mt Mee. Firefighters were powerless to prevent it "from spreading. Valuable forestry reserves in th« Kilcoy district are in danger. Hore than 150 firemen, police and civilians were unable to control the outbreak between Beaudesert and Tambourine on Mondootum station.
By nightfall the Beaudesert police estimated that more than 6000 acres had been  destroyed and the fire wa« then sweeping on a two-mile front towards Camp Cable, which was the biggest wartime anny camp in Queensland, having been built for tbe United States army. The owner of Mondoolum station (Mr D. Fraser) ia at present in Brisbane for tbe show.
Tonight between 15 and SO police were sent from Brisbane to join forces with the firefighters from Beaudesert, Moongalpä, Tambourine and Jimboomba.
AT BURLEIGH HEADS A fierce bushfire that started near Burleigh Heads on Monday
and was beaten back on Tuesday after it had crossed the railway line at West Burleigh, broke out with renewed violence today. "

Pretty much Lee.

I am near binna burra and the idea of building on the edge of a heavily treed steep slope is kind of nuts.

One of my neighbours, nearly every show holiday in winter , starts a fire and then heads off to the show.
One year it was burning so slowly it took 2 days to burn down my hill.
The tallest flames were all of 6 inches high.

Just let us traditional owners look after the land and kick those loopy greens to the kerb

Proof that we're being led by idiots: there's so much oil around at the moment, the producers can't even give it away. Still the idiots in the Federal Government aren't taking this gilded opportunity to replenish our reserves.

Federal Government to spend $94 million stockpiling fuel in the US

They're on the right track here, but fuel stockpiled overseas is useless if it cannot be delivered to Australia when needed in time or at all. The only sensible option for an Australian fuel stockpile is for that stockpile to be located in Australia.

Surely the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the shortcomings of globalisation by now? Sure, countries can trade with other countries all they want, but stockpiles of critical supplies MUST be located domestically. The current government is very slow to learn this lesson.

It's ridiculous paying $94m to stockpile fuel overseas.

I wonder which liberal party donor thought up that scam?

We don't have anywhere to store it here.

Buying more while prices are low is a great idea.

When I was posted to Darwin, I visited the underground fuel tunnels that were built to store fuel during the war.   Very interesting tourist attraction, and you don't realise how far under Darwin these things go!     Is it worthwhile considering storage options like old mine shafts, disused tunnelling etc?   Not sure if the costs outweigh the benefits but an option to consider if we are that concerned about storage.   If it became that bad that we needed to access overseas storage, who is to say the storage country are not similarly affected and won't give it to us anyway?

You're easily pleased when the Libs are ruining the country.

Who's been in office for most of the last 25 years? Surely they could have allocated $100 million in any of their last six or seven budgets for upgrades to storage facilities when they were handing out billions to their mates.

This is what you get when you've got a lazy, do-nothing government in office.
