Poverty in Singapore is a growth industry
Aug 3rd, 2019 at 4:10pm

I have worked in Singapore and was astonished at the disparity between expat remuneration rates and local remuneration rates. Expat rates were not that good either and I left after a short tenure after an offer of much better remuneration in another Asian country and 8 months later to a third Asian country at even better remuneration. That was some time ago.

Singapore has a high GDP per capita, however, most of the money seems to be siphoned off at the top leaving little for the punters.

The Singapore government is making average Singaporeans captives in government-supplied accommodation. The price of short term rental accommodation in Singapore is multiples of the cost of similar accommodation in Australia and the USA.

The model of capitalism in Singapore is creating an abundance of losers as the growing poverty levels exemplify.

I also don't believe corruption is rooted out in Singapore but in fact, is controlled from the top. A Singapore government investment entity was linked in a corruption scandal with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Singapore was once the middleman in Chinese international trade, however, the Chinese no longer need Singapore for this reason and a revenue stream is drying up.

Singapore government debt has risen from 85% GDP in 2007 to 111% GDP in 2018.

TOP 10 FACTS ABOUT POVERTY IN SINGAPORE
facts about poverty in SingaporeMany facts about poverty in Singapore are not widely known. Singapore is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but that doesn’t mean it is free from poverty. Media representations of Singapore often show prosperous aspects of the country while neglecting to cover issues of poverty. Singapore also does not have a poverty line, so it is difficult to measure how many households are officially in poverty.

Top 10 facts about poverty in Singapore:
Singapore has one of the largest income gaps in the world. Wealth is disproportionately spread among wealthy foreigners while native Singaporeans live in poverty and often have lower-paying jobs.
Between 2012 and 2015, the number of families receiving financial assistance in Singapore jumped 43.45 percent. This is the highest poverty rate ever reported in the country.
Singapore does not have a national minimum wage. This means that there is no standard for the lowest an employer has to pay an employee, leaving many laborers without enough money to reach an acceptable standard of living. However, Singapore does have laws regulating minimum monthly income for security guards and cleaning employees.
In 2012, Singapore was the 6th most expensive city to live in. This, coupled with wealth inequalities, lack of minimum wage laws and other factors, contributes to the continuation of the poverty cycle in the city.
Singapore has progressive taxation, so anyone with an income of less than $20,000 is exempt from taxation. However, the cost of living in Singapore also needs to be considered when looking at this minimum income.
Poverty in Singapore disproportionately affects the elderly. While Singapore as a whole has increased 43.45 percent in the number of families relying on government assistance between 2012 and 2015, residents over the age of 60 saw a 74.32 percent increase in poverty.

Another of the facts about poverty in Singapore regarding age is 5 percent of young Singaporeans under 30 are unemployed. Many others cannot find jobs with sufficient wages because of the lack of minimum wage laws in the country.
Many young Singaporeans rely on financial aid from the government. According to the Singapore Ministry of Social and Financial Development, in 2015, 5,644 households with applications younger than 35 years old received short or medium term financial aid.
According to Singaporeans Against Poverty, the price of goods and services in Singapore increased 13.1 percent over the last three years.
The government, as well as other independent organizations, have plans to implement a variety of policies that will make finding housing, getting an education and paying taxes more bearable for poor Singaporeans.
These are the top 10 facts about poverty in Singapore. Poverty is a prevalent issue in the country and it has many contributing factors that need to be addressed individually. The government of Singapore can do more to reduce income inequality and ensure all Singaporeans are able to afford a proper standard of living.

Horrible little country. Hot, humid, full of shopping malls. Everything's against the rules. Everyone seems to cower in an oppressive conformity. The guest-workers, because they can be shown the door at any moment, and the professionals, who need to keep their heads down to get ahead.

Your Muselman just keeps his head down and prays. Singapore always seems to have the droning air of boredom.

Great airport though. Good metro system. Singapore is just the sort of place to make the trains run on time.

Income from shares in not taxed in Singapura - obviously a situation set up by the rich to ensure they stay rich, and they have no regard for anyone else.

That is what we are fighting to avoid becoming the norm here... and that is why some of us oppose the LNP with all it evils.

We have a user here who keeps trying to say that company tax is the same as individual personal income tax - obviously he is from Singapura.... and knows no better.

Apparently they consider that putting your money - if you are fortunate enough to have any - into a business is sufficient to make you tax-free for life..  of course that leaves out the reality that most have no such opportunity, so this is Robber Baron Asian Mandarinism to the max.... and has no place here.......

Of course, China works that way - New Mandarinism - and the top hogs pay no taxes... after all, they support the masses through their gathering of hundreds of billions personally through business, don't they?

I've told you before - our 'politicians' view that kind of control, using the entire resources of the State to control the populace and generate their own mega-income, as being the way forward.

That's why we need to get rid of them all... before they destroy this country and make it a new Asian Banana Republic Third World travesty of a society... a 'socialist' 'republic' in which the Party bosses prosper unto the billions and the majority live on crumbs that fall from the Mandarin's table........

Time to take up arms..... I kid you not...

My wife's grandfather wasn't so lucky, no boat for him. Hated Japs with a passion until the day he died. Luckily he made it back and saw his eldest and only son(wife's father) at that time after being shipped of leaving his pregnant wife behind. Went on to have a couple more kids and teach music.
