A new capital for Australia?
Jul 18th, 2019 at 9:28pm

I think we should have a new capital city for Australia. Canberra is too far east. I propose we have a more central location.

...

The above image depicts the exact geographical centre point of Australia.

The capital city should be a the exact centre of the country so that no matter where you are on either coast, it will be the same distance to travel there.

Ayers Rock would be perfect.

And when the Libs get the updated Bradfield Scheme going with new dams etc then Ayers Rock will be in the great North Food Bowl.

At a minimum it would require infrastructure for a city of a quarter of a million people. There is no reliable and sustainable water supply for a city of that size in central Australia and construction of a lot of other infrastructure will be needed.

It took Canberra 27 years to be built after Federation. One of the key considerations for the location of Canberra and the ACT was a reliable water supply. That's why half of the ACT is a national park and the ACT has the size and shape it has: the southern border of the ACT follows the outline of the watershed and the national park protects the water supply.

Furthermore, such a relocation would significantly increase the administration costs. The majority of parliamentarians would need to travel further to Parliament. Canberra is located where it is to minimise travel. If the capital was relocated to central Australia, 92 HoR members and 38 Senators would have significantly further to travel (those from NSW, Victoria, ACT and Tasmania). The distance would be much the same for the 41 HoR members and 24 Senators from Queensland or SA. Only 18 HoR members and 14 Senators would have a significantly lesser distance (those from WA and NT).

It would cost a huge amount of money for no clear benefit and greater ongoing running costs. After the Coalition's smash-and-grab on the tax system in the last few years there won't be any money available for such grandiose harebrained schemes.

Relocating the capital is an idea that's not been thought out. At all. It's pretty clear that the ones who proposed or supported this idea have given no consideration whatsoever to such practical considerations.

Usual negative can't do stuff from a Lefty.

China knocks a full city out in a couple of years.

The updated Bradfield Scheme with many new dams will provide the water into the dead dry heart. Just like what happens already when there is a La Nina wet season. So dam this huge amount of water.

You can almost hear the horrified squeals and screeches from the Greenies who want to drag Australia back into the 18th century ready for the UN One World Govt in a sustainable world.

Yes.

And they remain empty for many years.

Maybe you could go live in one.

Can someone start a GoFundMe page for juliar, so we can send him off to a ghost city in China?

I'll kick in $100.

I'll add another $200 to that.

Mind you, I still have a suspicion that 'juliar' is some sort of Liberal Party bot.
