Psychiatric Diagnosis 'scientifically meaningless'
Jul 13th, 2019 at 10:36pm

Study finds psychiatric diagnosis to be 'scientifically meaningless'

Quote:
A new study, published in Psychiatry Research, has concluded that psychiatric diagnoses are scientifically worthless as tools to identify discrete mental health disorders.

The study, led by researchers from the University of Liverpool, involved a detailed analysis of five key chapters of the latest edition of the widely used Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), on 'schizophrenia', 'bipolar disorder', 'depressive disorders', 'anxiety disorders' and 'trauma-related disorders'.

Diagnostic manuals such as the DSM were created to provide a common diagnostic language for mental health professionals and attempt to provide a definitive list of mental health problems, including their symptoms.

The main findings of the research were:

Psychiatric diagnoses all use different decision-making rules
There is a huge amount of overlap in symptoms between diagnoses
Almost all diagnoses mask the role of trauma and adverse events
Diagnoses tell us little about the individual patient and what treatment they need
The authors conclude that diagnostic labelling represents 'a disingenuous categorical system'.

Lead researcher Dr. Kate Allsopp, University of Liverpool, said: "Although diagnostic labels create the illusion of an explanation they are scientifically meaningless and can create stigma and prejudice. I hope these findings will encourage mental health professionals to think beyond diagnoses and consider other explanations of mental distress, such as trauma and other adverse life experiences."

Professor Peter Kinderman, University of Liverpool, said: "This study provides yet more evidence that the biomedical diagnostic approach in psychiatry is not fit for purpose. Diagnoses frequently and uncritically reported as 'real illnesses' are in fact made on the basis of internally inconsistent, confused and contradictory patterns of largely arbitrary criteria. The diagnostic system wrongly assumes that all distress results from disorder, and relies heavily on subjective judgments about what is normal."

Professor John Read, University of East London, said: "Perhaps it is time we stopped pretending that medical-sounding labels contribute anything to our understanding of the complex causes of human distress or of what kind of help we need when distressed."

Let's see if your thread garners responses, AiA

I posted this same article few days ago with thread heading The Truth is Out or something like that

Maybe people don't like seeing their 'condition' being outed for what it is

so we'll see

So what is the alternative? Stop psychiatric treatment because you cannot "scientifically" pigeon hole mental illness?

Mental illness is the new buzzword

for a condition which has plagued mankind since its inception

and seeing as they closed close to all the psychiatric hospitals/institutions and chucked the 'incurable' and 'criminal' crazies out on the street, what we have now is the same bunch of people chewing down Big Pharma 'cures'

there is no cure for the human condition other than getting off the backside, kicking the self pity to the curb and getting on with what remains of their lives

or maybe some of our members didn't read the decently lengthy article penned in conjunction with the almost 'sent crazy' mother of her son who's described within the article as suffering 'mental illness'

her son was fine, she said.  Had great props from his long-term (9 year) employers

then he moved out of home to live with mates

While living with mates, he began dabbling in drugs  (clue)

he began mucking up at work
his loyal long term employers did what they could to assist and referred him for counselling, etc

but he kept on with the drugs and lost his job

from then, his mother said, he spiralled downhill

ended up living on the streets

found in a drug induced state and transferred to hospital (all paid by those who were on the way to WORK and found him on the street, who paid again for his ambulance transfer to hospital which was also being paid by those with problems of their own but who were getting on with it and going to WORK to pay their own roof, food, etc

the hospital was full to the brim (by those who suffered mental-illness, so many huh) so he was discharged

and he rapidly found more drugs (hint) and ended up in hospitals over and over

the last time he was discharged, said his mother, he was simply sent out on the street to find his own way home .... fancy

and now she's braying (poor woman) for there to be more hospitals (paid for by those who manage to keep on keeping on) for mentally unwell individuals such as her poor son

he's been diagnosed as suffering schizophrenia, she says

but he's living up the coast or somewhere now

and 'doing better'

her son agrees there should be more help, more  hospitals, more long-term treatments for those suffering mental ill health

gee

prescription drugs (Big Pharma)

combined with recreational drugs (syndicates)

produces 'mental health' problems

guess we don't need a shingle on the gate to diagnose that

what I found interesting was the fact the mother and maybe a father in there, don't have their son living at home with them

instead of on the taxpayers' back

There's a repulsive example of failed humanity living around here somewhere

in a half-way house, I've been reliably told.  Taxpayers ... keep on paying, yeah

she gets money from .... the taxpayer via the government

she literally chits on the footpaths around here

you smell it and after that pay a lot of attention to where you're stepping

she urinates on the footpaths too and in bus seats

she's bent over like a crone, but apparently she's only in her 40s

she chits on the floor of the local op-shop if they dont' give her stuff for free ... straight from the mouth of a regular op-shop volunteer with crippling arthritis, lives on a meagre pension but nevertheless walks to the op-shop to 'help contribute'.  A nice woman by the way, who undertook, out of all the ladies at the op-shop, to clean the mentally-unwell varmint's chit off the carpets

the police (taxpayers again) are called often to 'come get' the filthy pig off the streets and out of businesses

Op shop ladies again revealed that when the cops turn up and try to coax the filthy cow out of businesses, she insists they take her to the op-shop to get free clothing and anything else that catches her evil eye

and according to eye-witnesses, the coppers browse the clothing racks while waiting for the chitting, peeing demon ... and THEY pick out clothes she might like.  But she quickly rejects anything in her size, insisting she's two sizes smaller.  So, according to the op shop volunteers, the 'mentally unwell' tax guzzling piece of ugly filth remains 'very conceited' despite her allegedly 'unfit to work or do anything constructive because she has 'mental health' issues

she has an Opal card and bank cards and knows how to operate the ATMs flawlessly

but she's opted out of taking responsibility for herself

opted out of earning a living or contributing to anything of value to the community

and instead guzzles taxpayer monies as if entitled

she forces local businesses to give her whatever she wants ... food, cosmetics, clothing, smokes, etc. ... or they know what will happen

I saw a restaurant owner standing two doors up from his premises, waggling a five or ten note at her.  She ignored that. She was holding out for a bigger note.  When I upbraided him for 'taunting' the mentally unwell creature, he said it was to get her away from his diners

and that's what this supposedly mentally unwell creature does. Yes, she's Italian. So was the restaurant owner and so are many of the businesses locally.  She extorts

she extorts
mafia tactics

and she's doing very well, eh?  Free board and lodgings.  Free everything else.  Free money

but SHE's suffering mental health issues

and WE cope with our own issues and pay for hers and for all those like her

apparently, according to those who knew her in her teens, she went really hard on drugs

blew her mind

her family won't have anything to do with her

govt. psychologists paid by you and me

So what is the alternative?

Or did he only just come to the shocking conclusion the psychology is a complicated field of study where the scientific method is limited by ethical constraints? I'm pretty sure they say the same thing in PY101.

The alternative is staring us in the face

and if proposed, the fact those alternatives are their options

I predict a lot of sudden 'recoveries' from their so-called 'mental illnesses'

because the intelligent 'cure' for mental illnesses deemed so incapacitating that the 'mental health specialists' (massive industry and growing .. an industry of BS)

would be to put a bullet between their eyes .. between the eyes of those who are deemed to be suffering debilitating 'mental illness'  and who afterwards 'own' that title with every fiber of their being

kill them off

they are a burden

an intelligent society rids itself of burdens

And you wonder why i pick on you when you post garbage like this.
But then again the loony Right always have looked for impractical and simplistic solutions to what are complex problems.

The Libs and Labs are in distress, they need lots of diagnosis. They are past their use-by date and no longer use reality as a guiding principle

You're right

we know it

and what happened to my thread about the creation of an Australians' Union?

that would kick 'government' out the door

We don't need government as it is

what we need is Of the People, For the People, By the People

an Australians' Union.  A union composed of Australians, for Australians, by Australians

then we'd be back in business

we'd run this place our way, for ourselves and not in obedience to overseas powers who're running us into the ground for their own profit and power and in accordance with globalist ambitions and the Kalergi plan

we need to get rid of government

we need to boycott elections

we need to quit paying taxes

we need to stand up as one and say, 'Out !  Out you bastards ! '

This is where the smart-arse 'Science' world falls on its face against the fact that it is Religion that has governed the 'behaviour' of Humanity and it will always continue to do so - even if 'new' Religions come out of North America (Mormonism?), Sahul (Australia), Oceania and South America.

Only Oceanian Scientist are 'free' thinkers - the others 'serve' the likes of Politics, Military, etc.
