One of my children went from peach-skin to pizza in a few months.  It's one of the most damaging afflictions in terms of confidence, self-esteem.  And some of that damage remains for decades

He was prescribed minimycin (sp?) then Roaccutane.  Some of his friends went through that same process, one of them undergoing three separate courses of Roaccutane.  My son was put on two courses, from memory.  They had to carefully watch their diet -- carrots were off the menu for him for years

After several years, he underwent two or three laser treatments which reduced the scarring by about 70% approx.  But of course the mental damage had turned him from a very outgoing, confident, easy-going, popular individual to an introvert who, although good looking and with great physique and good social and sporting skills, missed a good deal of what his life would have been if he hadn't been stricken with acne (big genetic component there)

It's said acne hits those with a fast metabolism whose skin cells multiply more rapidly than average.  As the skin attempts to discard the rapid turnover of discarded skin cells, they become trapped in sebum (skin oils, from what I understand) and clog up the pores.  Like a backed-up volcano

The cells in the sebum need to be expelled but the mass is too big and growing.  It's backed-up and becomes infected, red and swollen = the pimple.  A face full of infected mini-volcanos is called acne.  Some of the pustules can swell until they're large and painful = cystic acne, which is what my son and some of his friends had.  And of course the cysts, by the time they do erupt, leave scars.  He had soft, easily-scarred skin.  So even when the acne's reduced via medication, the sufferer is left with often severe facial scarring.  Same with any other part of the body that's been through the acne cycle

Sufferers ask why the damn acne usually affects the face -- the most visible part of their body -- rather than their backside or shoulders which could be concealed.  I don't think I've seen a doctor answer that one

Before he was prescribed medication (which has serious side effects, particularly for women) we of course bought him every topical acne 'cure' on the market, to no avail.

The skin is an eliminative organ, meaning basically that its job it to shove stuff out.  As acne is the result of clogged skin cells, applying stuff to the outside of the skin makes as much sense as trying to push poo back in

The topical acne solutions promise the world and when you're desperate, you want to believe those promises.  But the truth is, what is inside must come out and so the only effective solution to acne must be something that stops the skin cells from being produced so rapidly that the skin can't keep up with its job of elimination

Some people think little pimples are acne, when in fact they're not .. they're just pimples.  So it's important to be properly diagnosed

An Italian doctor used to apply a urine solution to acne sufferers' skin.  The urine solution was adminisistered via sterile clothes, to which weak electricity was added.  He claimed success in treating not only acne but stretch marks, also.  It was a lengthy and fairly expensive course of treatment

Urine was one of the old-wives' treatments for acne, a baby's urine

Obviously, hormones play a large role in acne.  We don't see it on small children or middle-aged or older (as a general rule)

So I'd recommend that you first get a qualified diagnosis and then be guided by doctors' recommendations regarding treatment.  Roaccutane seems to be the best the medical field has to offer but as your doctor should be at pains to advise, there are a lot of side-effects involved.  Apart from strong recommendations or even stipulations that a female refrain from becoming pregnant, there have also been a number of suicides attributed to Roaccutane, world wide.  Successful individuals with no history of mental health problems have suddenly, without warning, killed themselves.  There was a class action involving Roaccutane and the parents of those who'd suicided. It may still be ongoing, don't know

Maybe laser treatment might be recommended to you by your doctor which I think would be preferable to Roaccutane.  Laser treatment of that sophistication wasn't available at the time for my son or his friends.  If it had been, we would have opted for that, no question, despite that it can be expensive and require a week or so off work.  So maybe you could explore laser treatment, because things have come a long way in laser treatments.  But really do your homework, because laser clinics make a lot of promises too but have been known to cause permanent scarring.  Make sure you find one who's fully qualified, recommended by specialists.  And ask to see photos of their work and effectiveness with previous clients.  And best of luck.  Everyone will have told you that the acne will leave in time and although that's small comfort to the sufferer, it's true.  Not often you see anyone over 40 with acne

Daisy, in one of the topic-headers it asks; 'How can I banish my acne '.  So I wrote the above post.  Then, in a lower topic-header, it says: 'How can I banish my acne scars?'

which are two separate topics.  One's about active acne and the other is about the resultant acne scars.  Having only seen the first header when I responded, I spoke more about acne.  Seems I should have addressed acne scarring

In regard to acne scarring, you have a few options -- mechanical dermabrasion, chemical dermabrasion and laser treatment

Mechanical dermabrasion, according to a dermatologist I spoke with, is a bloody affair. It consists of basically using a sanding machine in the form of a stiff brush, to sand off the top layers of the skin.  It requires a lot of down-time because first the blood has to scab.  Then the scabs have to come away by themselves -- no picking or you'll get more scarring.  When the scabs are gone, the skin will be very tender and highly susceptible to sun damage.  And it will be red, same as under any reasonably deep scab.  So not for the faint of heart and I don't think it's performed very often any more in the West

Chemical dermabrasion or chemical-peel is much the same, except the damage to the scarred tissue is caused by strong chemicals -- pretty much on a par with controlled drain cleaner.  Same thing -- scabs, weeping, swelling, itching followed by scabs having to come away on their own, then redness and strict avoidance of direct sunlight.  An added and considerable danger in the hands of the wrong or uninformed practitioner is that the chemicals can be absorbed through the skin.  I've read of at least two people who died as a result of kidney damage.  And again, not for the faint of heart and requires considerable time off work

The third option is laser treatment which will also require the individual to take time from work.  My son had three laser treatments roughly a year apart.  Swelling and redness and of course, strict instructions to avoid direct sunlight.  Things have most likely improved further as regards the laser treatments, but you must do your homework and make sure to go to someone reputable, recommended by specialists.  A laser in the hands of the wrong person could spell disaster

The results from all the above options is pretty much the same.  A reduction in scarring of about 50-70% improvement on the first run.  Next time, a further 50-70% improvement on what's left.  And if you go for a third, a similar improvement.  As you can see, the treatments reduce what is left each time, so cumulatively, you do get a great reduction in the scarring.  None of the options are cheap, but most say it's worth it despite the sacrifice, to be rid of the worst of the scarring

With my son, after three treatments, there's definitely an improvement compared to how the cystic acne left him looking.  And each laser treatment reduced the scarring even more.  But in certain lights, you can see the scarring is all there in the same way as when you try to sand out a deep mark in a piece of furniture or flooring.  He was tossing up as to whether or not to have another laser dermabrasion, but that was a few years ago and he seems to be resigned to the fact he will never regain the unmarked skin he had before the acne hit

A doctor will show you that scars in the skin are laid way down in the skin's layers.  You most likely have a scar or two from childhood and know that those scars remain through into adulthood, even though some may grow fainter with time.  It's the same with acne scarring. Some of the cystic acne scars are laid deep down in the dermis and become a permanent scar. Just like valleys and mountains in the natural landscape.  Only dermabrasion that can go down quite deep has a hope of wiping away the original scar-blueprint.  Which is why any sort of dermabrasion, be it mechanical, chemical or laser, leaves a mess of the skin initially

Don't fall for the toy dermabrasion tools you can buy online which promise to 'remove' scars.  Waste of time and money.  It's like rubbing furniture polish on a deep mark on a table -- it might polish the surface but it won't remove the mark.  Same with dermabrasion -- it has to get down to a certain (safe) level if it has a hope of evening-out the deeper layers of the skin.  And that's why mechanical or chemical dermabrasion is severe -- basically, they have to scrub off the top skin to get to the scar-blueprint.  And if your skin's been scrubbed off at the top, it's going to bleed etc.  Laser is far less invasive and less traumatic.  And it's not something that can be carried out in a beauty parlor or 'clinic' -- in fact, in the wrong hands, that can lead to even more and worse scarring.  So be advised by a fully qualified dermatologist and take his advice regarding which laser place you should attend.  And again, best of luck.  Oh ... and if you get a gut feeling about the laser clinician, listen to that gut feeling.  If it tells you to get out, do that .. make whatever excuse you have to, even if they've been recommended by your doctor.  Lasers aren't toys and can do a lot of damage.  Someone who was reliable two months ago and has been recommended by specialists might not be reliable today, for whatever reasons.  People use drugs, they have breakdowns or they're just having a bad day.  So it pays to listen to your instincts, always. You can always find someone else but you only get one face

I had bad acne when young. Couldn't get a date for the Formal, not even Gay Ray would be my date.

But it eventually passed. During the time - the trick is to constantly keep your skin 'clean'. Cleaning doesn't get rid of them - as it is just a 'phase' of your system that you have to just ride for a few years.

A 'surgical' kit came in handy for nightly attention to the face with a small mirror. Don't let a pimple 'fester' of its own accord or you will be scarred for life. Attack it and even 'before' you blossoms from a skin pore. You will be amazed how many hidden lumps of oil are under the surface ready to pounce when you least want it too - like at a party.

Main rule - just keep your face clean and not with potatoes either.  Roll Eyes
When attending to your face. Make sure your hands are clean of 'oils' too.

Other than that - you just gotta ride out the hormone surge.
Everyone's hormones act in different ways - for some, its acne. For others, its a small dick, small boobs, squeaky voice, lack of balls in a fight, etc, etc.

Although with Acne, my balls dropped pretty heavily and my voice made some girls ache, when 13. But come 18 - I was the ugliest guy in the school and it was my 'outcast'. But the most beautiful/popular girl (grade above) was always nice to me and we still keep in contact even today.

I went on to become a male model and nude model for good $$$  Wink
