Psychological Analysis of Trump Supporters
Jun 18th, 2019 at 9:59am

Interesting article on it https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/mind-in-the-machine/201812/complete-psyc....

I'm struck by a couple of thinga

1. The psychology is complex and motre than just they are idiots
2. How much of this could be applied to the recent Federal election here

But to summarise the points

1. Practicality trumps morality.
This group doesn't care what Trump does outside of being president like cheating on wives etc  as long as he gets them jobs or tax cuts

2.The brains attention system is more strongly engaged by Trump.
Even if you disagree with him, he holds your attention longer with showmanship and simple language

3. Americas obsession with celebrities. Easy

4. Some men just want to watch the world burn. Steve Bannon

5. Conservatives are more sensitive to threat. Trump focusing on Hispanics energizes conservatives

6. The Power of Mortality Reminders and Perceived Existential Threat.

Based on terror management theory which hypothesises that humans are highly aware of our own mortality and as we age we're even more aware of it, and any threat to our mortality tends to make us congregate with those who share our traits and be more aggressive to those who don;t

7. Dunning-Kruger effect.

E.g. evey time Trump tells a lie about crime going up or the economy doing better under him etc, not only are people misinformed and believe it, they're also unaware about being misinformed

8. Relative deprivation

The sense of being deprived of something to which one feels entitled. The whole MAGA thing I think sums that up. People think America isn't great anymore, and Trump is promising to bring that back.

9. Lack of Exposure to Dissimilar Others.

If you're isolated in your social and cultural group, i.e. you live in middle class white suburbia or rural etc (and same for Hispanic areas) you're more likely to have higher levels of prejudice

10. Trump’s Conspiracy Theories Target the Mentally Vulnerable

Look at the usual suyspects on here, The link between schizotypy personality and belief in conspiracy theories is well-established,

11. Trump Taps into the Nation’s Collective Narcissism

Collective narcissism is an unrealistic shared belief in the greatness of one’s national group. It often occurs when a group who believes it represents the ‘true identity’ of a nation — the ‘ingroup,’ in this case White Americans — perceives itself as being disadvantaged compared to outgroups who are getting ahead of them ‘unrightfully.’

12. The Desire to Want to Dominate Others

Social dominance orientation (SDO) — which is distinct from but related to authoritarian personality (#13) — refers to people who have a preference for the societal hierarchy of groups, specifically with a structure in which the high-status groups have dominance over the low-status ones. Those with SDO are typically dominant, tough-minded, and driven by self-interest.

13. Authoritarian Personality

Authoritarian personality is characterized by belief in total and complete obedience to authority. Those with this personality often display aggression toward outgroup members, submissiveness to authority, resistance to new experiences, and a rigid hierarchical view of society.

14. Racism and Bigotry

It would be grossly unfair and inaccurate to say that every one of Trump’s supporters have prejudice against ethnic and religious minorities, but it would be equally inaccurate to say that few do. The Republican party, going at least as far back to Richard Nixon’s “southern strategy,” has historically used tactics that appealed to bigotry, such as lacing speeches with “dog whistles” — code words that signaled prejudice toward minorities that were designed to be heard by racists but no one else.

It's good that someone is studying Trump. About 5 years of non-stop study it is about the amount of time you should dedicate to studying this incredible phenomenal.

Trump proves that it is the emotional connection with leaders that is so much more important then rationality and policy

Trump has incredible powers of persuasion. He also understands that authenticity is key.
You can be a bullshiter and still be authentic you just have to maintain the frame

The problem for the democrats is that they have to disparate audiences
Very well educated liberals in Washington and New York and the very poor in the welfare system. And they have to lead a schizophrenic existence to appeal to these groups. Hillary has a very different message 4 Mark Zuckerberg then she does for poor Hispanic farm workers.

Trump however can just be Trump Trump Trump Trump all day long
He can tweet like Trump he can look like Trump he can act like Trump he can be the authentic Trump
That is very very appealing to people who feel quite rightly that Washington is full of fakes and phonies

In 2019, we live in POST-TRUTH, POST-MORALITY world.

bojack,

Every point that your OP article alludes to, has a parallel in moslem behaviour and attitudes towards those who are not moslems.

morality - fight, and kill the disbelievers, it is virtuous to do so.

The brains attention system is more strongly engaged - ISLAM is virtuous, obey Allah, you are a slave of Allah.

obsession with celebrities - Mohammed,        no one must be permitted to criticise Mohammed. Mohammed is the 'celebrity', the perfect man, of the religion of ISLAM.

just want to watch the world burn. - ISLAM mandates warfare, against ALL OF UNBELIEVING MANKIND, it is your duty as a believe to directly engage in this warfare.

Conservatives are more sensitive to threat. - "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors"   Koran 4.74-76

The Power of Mortality Reminders and Perceived Existential Threat. - "between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever"     Koran 60:4

not only are people misinformed and believe it, they're also unaware about being misinformed - "Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful." ....KILL ALL OF THE DISBELIEVERS.

Relative deprivation - disbelievers are robbing you, stealing from you, and they are raping moslem women and girls, and murdering believers.

Lack of Exposure to Dissimilar Others......you're more likely to have higher levels of prejudice - "Thou wilt not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, loving those who resist Allah and His Messenger, even though they were their fathers or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred...." Koran 58.22

Conspiracy Theories Target the Mentally Vulnerable - disbelievers are robbing you, stealing from you, and they are raping moslem women and girls, and murdering believers.

Trump Taps into the Nation’s Collective Narcissism - "Ye [moslems] are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong.....     moslems are the innocent, virtuous people.   not like those filthy disbelievers, who deserve to die.

The Desire to Want to Dominate Others - "Fight those who believe not in Allah....until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. "   Koran 9.29

Authoritarian Personality....Authoritarian personality is characterized by belief in total and complete obedience to authority. -       --------- >

"O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.....
Some people before you did ask such questions, and on that account lost their faith."
Koran 5.101, 102

"We sent not a messenger, but to be obeyed..........they ['believers'] can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction."
Koran 4.64, 65

"O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger [i.e. the clerics], and make not vain your deeds!"
Koran 47:33

Racism and Bigotry. -       --------- >

"....take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends....
......he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them."
Koran 5.51

"[Jews and the Christians...] Allah's curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!"
Koran 9.30

Mohammed's final declaration on the status of Jews and Christians, re ISLAM;
"On his death-bed Allah's Apostle....said, "May Allah's Curse be on the Jews and the Christians....."
hadithsunnah/bukhari #004.056.660

.

bojack,

In the OP you criticise Trump, and his methods and his worldview, and those who voted for him.

Q.
Have you ever spent as much energy, criticising ISLAM, and criticising the murderous and lying followers of ISLAM ???

I'm frankly not going to be lectured to about a focus in one post on Trumps supporters by someone who is so obsessed about Islam and portraying every Muslim as a terrorist.

bojack,

I didn't see even one person refute          the arguments and the evidences          which i presented in this post....

http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1560757511/1#1

.....which support my argument that;

Every moslem    ...is urged by the doctrines of his/her religion,

...to hate and to murder 'disbelievers' in the name of their religion.

Why is that ?

Surely, if i'm just lying, and slandering ISLAM, then that would be simple to demonstrate,
FOR A PERSON LIKE YOURSELF.

???

You need to get out more. The Canberra bubble you live in is not the real World - its a tax payer funded fantasy.

You're content but reality will burst that bubble. Donald Trump is not your enemy - its the change that he represents that you find threatening.

The High Conflict Institute has done some great research into Trump and those who support him.

For those who don't mind reading you can look it up, but for the Trump Supporters out there, you can listen to a recent podcast that goes into some great detail about the subject,

Trump's an old guard thug who only cares about himself and tries to emulate what he thinks a rich person should be and do.

Even with the wealth he has gained over the years, he's still an insecure poser.
