Two brothers accused of bashing one of Victoria's most senior police officers have been arrested after a statewide manhunt.
Assistant Police Commissioner Chris O'Neill, from Transit and Public Safety Command, was left bruised and bleeding after the pair allegedly attacked him in the grounds of St Kevin's College, near Heyington station in Toorak, about 5.30pm on Saturday.
The 60-year-old officer, who was off duty at the time, suffered cracked ribs, bleeding on the brain and possible kidney damage during the assault. He was taken to hospital and has since been released.
Police arrested a 20-year-old man on at about 2.40pm on Monday and his 18-year-old brother an hour later, both in Malvern East.
Both men are in custody and being questioned by police.
Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill described the attack as abhorrent and said detectives had been deployed across the state in an effort to apprehend the duo.
He said the pair had previously lived in Western Australia, the La Trobe Valley and Melbourne.
