Another Hydrogen Fueling Station Explodes:

Hydrogen Fueling Station Explodes: Toyota & Hyundai Halt Fuel Cell Car Sales

Blast was so big it set off airbags in nearby cars.

A hydrogen refueling station exploded and stood in flames yesterday in Sandvika, Norway, which could make June 10, 2019 the day when the perception about hydrogen stations and hydrogen fuel cell cars, in general, will forever change.
According to reports from the Uno-X station, the explosion was huge. It triggered airbags in nearby cars and caused the necessity to close off the busy E18 and E16 intersection. A safety zone of 500 meters was recommended by the fire service.

"“It is probably a tank that has exploded at the hydrogen station next to the police station at Kjorbo,” The Fire Services tells the local newspaper Budstikka."
"“E18 near the site is closed in both directions due to the danger of explosion. The E16 at the Bjornegarden tunnel in Barum is closed for the same reason,” The Road Traffic Central tweets Tweets."

The cause of the explosion is not yet known as it needs to be investigated.

Because of that, Uno-X closed its two other stations with hydrogen in Norway, while carmakers - Toyota and Hyundai - temporarily stopped sales of FCVs (well, only a few per month were usually sold anyway). Owners of FCVs are expected to get loaner cars.

Taking into consideration how few hydrogen refueling stations are installed around the world, with this explosion, the average number of explosions per station will probably be orders of magnitude higher than for any other fuel. Not a good thing if you intend to promote FCVs.
We were often criticizing hydrogen fuel cell cars as a poor alternative for all-electric, because of low energy efficiency, high cost and lack of refueling infrastructure. As the charging times decreased in new BEVs thanks to ultra-fast chargers and the range on a single charge increased, it seemed that FCVs will never have a chance to take off. Any issues with safety (especially if repeated) only adds to the challenge.

Just last week a Hydrogen Plant in Sanfracisco exploded and stopped hydrogen supply there, now this...

The explosion set off airbags in surrounding areas, just lucky no one was refilling.......Hydrogen is a highly flammable liquid under immense pressure (10,000psi)..... Wink

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- An explosion at a chemical plant in Santa Clara caused a shelter in place for residents and businesses in the area.

Flames bursting out of Air Products chemical facility shook buildings and residents at least five miles away from it.

"You heard the boom and then you felt like a wave, a pressure... a force. It just hit you all around you and moving you slanting you back," said Evan Rosales.

"The tanker truck was in the process of being fueled and it began to leak and there was a large hissing noise. The workers on site tried attempted to shut down the valve of the line that was fueling one of the trucks," said Battalion Chief for Santa Clara Fire Dept., Drew Miller.

It took firefighters an hour and at least three aerial master streams to put out the fire. The biggest challenge? Hydrogen is invisible.

"They were also using thermal imaging cameras from different vantage points to make sure that the hydrogen wasn't burning even after it appeared that it was shut down," said Miller.

Businesses around the plant were evacuated and a two-block radius shelter in place for several hours was ordered by firefighters.

Tanker Filled With Liquid Hydrogen Catches Fire at El Cajon Business Park

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- A tanker truck loaded with liquid hydrogen caught fire Wednesday but a team led by a daring engineer facing extreme danger sealed the flaming leak and ended the threat of a huge fireball explosion to northwest Phoenix.
The truck driver and his assistant were the only ones injured. Residents, school children and business people over a 2-square-block area were evacuated during the 7 -hour crisis.

'I thought it was a sonic boom -- a giant sonic boom' said A.J. Pfeifer of Richardson's Carpet Shoppe about three blocks away. 'It rattled the building.'
A Fire Department spokesman, Steve Jensen, said a storage tank explosion could have sent a fireball roaring through business and residential districts of northwest Phoenix for a quarter-mile in all directions.
Fire crews were called away because of the danger and were powerless to stop the leak or the fire. They hosed down the fire until Predmore arrived, donned protective clothing and led an 11-man team to the burning truck.

This explosion that rattled Building 7 blocks away was just a bit of escaped hydrogen, the tanker didn't blow up,,, imagine the damage if the whole thing went up, probably just a crater.....
As you can see , Hydrogen is a very dangerous Liquid and considering how few Hydrogen stations there are and how many Explosions we really need to think about it as a fuel source.... Wink

Hydrogen Fueling stations worldwide are having to close their doors, until the 2 explosions in 1 week have been investigated, It means the Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars will be useless until they open again because it's the only way they can refuel. which could take months.....

Toyota and Hyundai in Finland are already giving their customer's loaner cars until this mess is sorted....

I bet Jules is happy he hasn't bought one yet...... Wink

yes, just a crater would be left.
It would be an instant explosion.

It was always an issue with LPG stored in vessels under huge pressure but hydrogen is a lot worse because it is a single atom molecule and is very hard to contain !!
