India's Rubbish Mountain
Jun 5th, 2019 at 8:07pm

Quote:
India rubbish mountain to rise higher than Taj Mahal

India's tallest rubbish mountain in New Delhi is on course to rise higher than the Taj Mahal in the next year, becoming a fetid symbol for what the UN considers the world's most polluted capital.

Hawks and other birds of prey hover around the towering Ghazipur landfill on the eastern fringe of New Delhi, stray cows, dogs and rats wander at will over the huge expanse of smoking filth.

Taking up the area of more than 40 football pitches, Ghazipur rises by nearly 10 metres a year with no end in sight to its foul-smelling growth.

According to East Delhi's superintendent engineer Arun Kumar, it is already more than 65 metres (213 feet) high.

The above link (Nationmaster)
Geography Stats: compare key data on China & India

for example, China is three times the area of India.  China provides 7.1 square kilometres for every 1000 people, whereas India provides only 2.6 square kilometres for every thousand people.  Their populations differ by less than 100 million, with China being slightly ahead

https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/07/after-the-sun-delhi-metro-to-source-power-f...
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), India’s largest and one of the world’s largest subway systems, is in the headlines once again due to its growing efforts towards sustainability.
DMRC has become the first metro project in India to source power from amwaste-based power plant. The project also sources power from a large-scale solar power project located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Apart from these ground-based renewable energy power plants, DMRC also operates rooftop solar power systems with a combined installed capacity of 28 megawatts.

The power will be supplied from a power plant located in eastern Delhi near a huge landfill. The power plant currently processes 1,300 tons of waste daily but was designed to handle 2,000 tons. The generation capacity of the power plant is 12 megawatts and DMRC shall procure 17.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from it every year. The power plant is located close to the ‘Pink Line’ of DMRC, the longest part of the 343-kilometer network.
The power plants uses its fuel from the Ghazipur landfill located at the border of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the state of Uttar Pradesh. The landfill reached its saturation point way back in 2002 but continues to be used by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation despite being a safety hazard and the cause of at least one major accident.

The Ghazipur landfill has already amassed 13 million tonnes of waste. Even if no new waste is added to the landfill it would take this power plant over 27 years to process the waste and make the landfill disappear. All stakeholders would definitely want this mountain of garbage to disappear as it is now on course to rise higher than the Taj Mahal which stands at 73 meters.

So they are going to turn the dump into a big power station, not good news for Adani..... Wink

I suggest you watch this absolute pearler from Oz/NZ band Dead Can Dance. The Host of the Seraphim.

Warning, this is a very dramatic depiction of the future of humanity, if it follows the way of India ...and India is like this because (like white USSR/Russia) they try to compete with the Yellow Man at his own game in his own part of the world.

New Delhi's garbage mountain is probably where the inspiration for the trash mountain came from in the movie "Idiocrasy".

how does India get it so wrong?..

New Delhi: India has been ranked sixth in the list of wealthiest countries with total wealth of $8,230 billion, while the United States topped the chart, says a report.

According to a report by New World Wealth, the US is the wealthiest country with total wealth of $64,584 billion, followed by China ($24,803 billion) and Japan ($19,522 billion).

Total wealth refers to the private wealth held by all the individuals living in each country/city. It includes all their assets (property, cash, equities, business interests) less any liabilities. The report, however, excludes government funds from its figures.

Others in the list include United Kingdom (4th, $9,919 billion), Germany (5th, $9,660 billion), France (7th, $6,649 billion), Canada (8th, $6,393 billion), Australia (9th, $6,142 billion) and Italy (10th, $4,276 billion).

6th wealthiest in the world......disgraceful. Angry Angry Angry Angry

Burning rubbish is the most practical solution to get rid of rubbish that can't be or isn't viable to recycle while not having to worry about landfills. I don't understand why more environmentalists support such a measure. I'm guessing that some are more interested in only supporting solutions that fit their world view rather than looking at the bigger picture and accepting solutions that aren't their preferred solution but at least attempt to reduce the severity of the problem.

A 12 MW plant isn't very big. The power plants operated by Adani have a total capacity close to 9600 MW.

If the current plant is going to take 27 years just to consume the current pile of rubbish, I don't understand why they aren't building a bigger plant.

as you say they could make this one a lot bigger and there would be lots more dumps in India to use this technology, if this existing plants proves to be feasible, then id expect to see lots more like it...
Don't you think New Delhi's air quality is bad enough with out burning a big pile of   waste as well ?

That's the dilemma - do you leave the rubbish to rot to produce methane, a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, and pollute the local ecosystem or do you burn the rubbish and reduce the air quality? You could install systems before the plant exhaust that reduce the particulates produced from a rubbish fuelled power plant, but what is the likelihood of such systems being installed on this Indian plant where the environment is not a major issue?
