Maybe someone can help, did Australia ever have a working Paternoster

Edit that, my error, no we didn't.

Got me a cheap K-Mart rod - works a charm...

Might have to go fling a line... try not to catch dolphins or albatross ... they follow boats and sometimes get caught on the hooks when trying to steal the bait (the birds that is)....

I didn't know what it was.

It looks too dangerous -
it could easily crush someone.

Comments.

Could have sworn that if you didn't get off in time, you would be crushed. I'd think it would fold up or something then go back up the same shaft. wow lol

I was riding one in Prague going to the top floor. I wasn't sure if I was there yet though and stayed on. As it passed I realised that was the highest stop. For a second I paused and thought, "Oh poo, what happens now." lol It just looped around though of course.

It would just keep going, or attempt to keep going while it crushes you, unless there is a safety mechanism that would stop it.  I know of someone who got killed in one because they attempted to take a plank of wood in it - it got caught between the box and the wall, bent, snapped and hit him in the neck.  Which is why there is usually a warning not to take anything into it except yourself.

But as Luke says, if you miss your floor, all you have to do is wait until it comes round again.

I saw one in Prague, but I didn't know what it was called.

'Paternoster' is a new word for me.

What does it have to do with fishing, though?   Undecided

Look up paternoster rig.

Basically It's a sinker on the bottom and 2 side lines with hooks at different heights.

Sometimes called a snapper rig as well.

Can be used from whiting up to large reefies.

I used to make loops, that way hooks and weights could be changed as needed.

Why bother.

Spearfishing is the best way. It's more selective, good for your health and fitness (Breath Holding) - as you attune your body to 'work' hard, with less oxygen. So on surface when working, you work hard - without breathing hard and working a sweat.
Also - you get the fish of your choice. No hit and miss wondering with line fishing from the surface.
Plus - the adrenaline rush and excitement, rather than just sitting in a boat... waiting  Roll Eyes

Then the 'shark' appears because you have killed fish on a catch line attached. My mate got dragged 20m when a Great White took his catch-line, before he unhooked. He got the 'ultimate rush'!  Cheesy

Why 'scratch the surface' when you can get to the 'deep within'  Wink

Sometimes, you don't even need a Speargun.  Grin
