Australian cops unveil their first electric car
Jun 3rd, 2019 at 6:53pm

Quote:
The thin blue line goes green: Australian cops unveil their first electric car as they buy a $182,000 Tesla Model X
Victoria Police will be using the Tesla Model X for highway patrol purposes
They will be developing the car alongside Tesla to make the car suitable for duty
The vehicle has been described as 'unlike any other' in the current fleet

The first electric police car in Australia has been unveiled - with a view to replace the force's entire fleet with battery-powered vehicles.

Victoria Police will be using the Tesla Model X to patrol highways across the state.

The car has five seats, five doors, can connect to the officer's mobile data, has the ability to display signage for officers to direct traffic and can help replay body camera footage.

'I can see in the future our entire fleet is electric,' Inspector Stuart Bailey told the Herald Sun.

'It's coming and it's coming rapidly.'

The Elon Musk-designed Model X can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds.

The car has built-in cameras and 'falcon wing' doors, and has the ability to drive itself.

The electric vehicle is a one-off procurement and is part of a study to help Tesla and Victoria Police fit the equipment and integrate current software into the on-board system.

Trials for the car will be in Bass Coast, La Trobe Valley, Casey and Dandenong.

Victoria Police claim they will pay a quarter for the car's electricity as they would for petrol, and they only need servicing once a year.

The Model X can cost up to $182,000 to buy but the state's police force won't reveal how much they paid.

This is up to four times more expensive than a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon patrol car, according to news.com.au.

The car can travel distances of 505km if it is fully charged and Tesla has plans to have supercharge points no more than 150km away from any location.

Rapid charge points can take 45 minutes while others can take between seven and eight hours.

There are currently 153 destination charging stations in Victoria.

'This vehicle is unlike any other Victoria Police has ever had in its fleet and could well be the future of road policing in this state, country and the world,' Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said.

'Our Highway Patrol car are equipped with cutting edge technology and this car gives us the opportunity to investigate having these technologies in a fully integrated in-car system which has the potential of streamlining the road policing effort.

'There is also a great environmental benefit to electric vehicles and considering our State Highway Patrol vehicles travel thousands of kilometres on the road per year, we should always be looking at ways we can lessen our impact on the environment.'

The Assistant Commissioner said the car will undergo constant checks while they're being used to see if they should expand their use.

'It is important to remember this is a concept vehicle for Victoria Police and we acknowledge that it will produce a number of unique circumstances and will continue to evolve as police software is integrated,' he said.

'Vehicles are obviously critical to the work we do as they represent the mobile office for many of our frontline police and projects such as these mean that when the switch does inevitably happen, our job of keeping Victorians safe will not be compromised.'

Hi Nail
"The Elon Musk-designed Model X can accelerate from
zero to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds."

That's impressive -
it can keep up with super bikes.

Aussies are really stupid sometimes. They didn't want to make those electric cars now they don't want to drive the ones that are made by others Cheesy LOL

This is what a souped up commodore can do which is not much !

Had you got your head out of your arse after all of these years of obsession with primitive technology from Ford and Holden perhaps the cops would be sourcing these cars from a local supplier by now and at a much cheaper price. This is what happens when you de-industrilaize a country and replace its productive manufacturing capability with a non productive service economy that creates nothing except more debt Sad

What a load of rubbish. It will be fully charged up during the night for the next days chase which the commodore and ford clunkers can't do well.

Even a million dollar Holden clunker is no match for the Tesla Cheesy LOL

Now Tesla have just realesed the Model 3 in Australia for $65000 and $80,000 for the performance, they might be a more economical way to go and any thing developed for the X should be transferable to the 3. Wink

How many EXTRA hours in the air would $182,000 allow the police chopper?

OR

How many police officers could be employed for that amount?

The Model X can cost up to $182,000 to buy but the state's police force won't reveal how much they paid.

Wouldn't it be in Tesla's best interest to give them the car ,  if they like it they will buy more....
As it is we don't know how much they did or didn't pay.

Remember Tesla don't do any advertising so the cost of one car for that kind of potential goodwill and new sales is very cheep for them

and good way to get across you point by insulting, it really made me change my point of view Smiley

what are they going to do in the air ? Launch a missile at them ? You've actually got to be on the ground to catch them and the old ford and holden clunkers are just not up to the task.

It's very, very expensive.

You could buy a hell of a lot of petrol for the price paid.  Shocked

BTW ... I went to school with someone who later became a mechanic for the Police pursuit cars ...

They really hot those things up. Not a standard piece of equipment under the hood.

Correct.

I bought an ex-cop car when I was about 18 or 19.

An XC Ford Fairmont GXL.

1978, I think.

Oh man, did that baby go!

It wasn't a pursuit car, though.

It was an undercover detective's car.

Looked exactly like this:

...

Heavily modified 351 engine, with a manual 4-speed.

All that video proves is that the Tesla can beat a Commodore with a lower maximum kw rating in a 1/4 mile race. It should be noted the the maximum kw rating of the Tesla's electric motor is a peak rating. That means that the electric motor can only run at that peak rating for a few minutes at best. In addition, the batteries can only provide the current at that peak rating for a few minutes as well as they were not designed to provide those current levels during normal operation.

While I can see the benefits in having a police vehicle with high acceleration, I don't think the $182,000 price tag is justified when you consider what else the Victorian Police could've done with the money. You could purchase two of the latest Ford Falcon "clunkers", known for their superior Barra engine, and with about $30K in engine, drive line, brake and suspension upgrades on each car you'd have two cars more powerful, lighter and just as comparable in accelerations as the Tesla.

Here's what happens when you put 800 HP into a Nissan Patrol, possibly the sh@#test body design you could have in a drag race, and race it against a Tesla:

I don't see the point in complaining about pensioners if you have no issues with the Victorian Police purchasing "gold plated" vehicles. Electric vehicles will be more common place in the future, but they are still too expensive to act as equivalent replacements for commercial vehicles.

The Luxury Car Tax is a federal tax. No discounts for the states.

If Tesla gave them the car, it is still subject to LCT. It is based on the retail price.
