BH a bit of armchair arm waving there.

Which coal power stations are they backed up by ? Or what happens when the wind stops and the sun is blocked ?

Have you been to Canberra, theres never a day where the above two things never happen. Its either sunny or windy or sunny and windy, its never cloudy and still.

Laugh till you cry wrote on May 20th, 2019 at 11:58pm:
Why is this a surprise?

Energy companies are monopolies and they have shareholders who expect dividends and who expect 10% annual growth in profits.

The only way the growth in profits can be achieved is by raising prices.

Electricity demand is rising faster than supply which means prices must rise to constrain demand.

In the absence of competition, a fair price is what the market will bear as determined by the economists employed by the electricity generating companies.

This ignores the reality that an electricity connection to the grid is now optional. It is technically feasible for various premises to exit the grid with a solar installation with batteries, possibly backed up with a diesel generator. It currently has a significant ROI of a few years. Rising prices reduce the ROI time and encourages the owners of more premises to exit the market.

The owners of the power networks therefore have an incentive not to allow prices to rise too much.

Bammy is now totally sucked in to the Greeny fantasies along with BH.

It helps to actually be able to understand how the electricity network works before making armchair arm waving waffly stuff that does not work in real life.

Oh Gosh, Now I have upset poor Bammy who was already grieving and BH is on the warpath.

Strewth! All I said was it is a good idea to understand what you are talking about.

Energy produced in the Australian Capital Territory mainly consists of solar electricity.

Electricity consumed in the Australian Capital Territory mainly comes from the national power grid through substations at Holt and Fyshwick (via Queanbeyan).

The ACT currently mandates that 90 percent of its electricity, amounting to 550 megawatts, will be supplied from renewable sources by 2020.

The ACT has four solar farms capable of generating about 36 megawatts. From 1913 until the mid 1950s some power was produced from the Kingston Powerhouse, a thermal power station in Kingston.

BH anything from the ABC pre Ita is not worth reading as it is just Greeny lies.

So the ACT uses the National Power Grid as a backup for when the sun fails particularly at night and the wind is still.

ACT has 4 solar farms which produce most of their renewable stuff.

But now the kicker comes in as electricity prices head towards the moon just like Sth Aust. Who wants to pay more for blackouts and unreliable unstable power ?

Higher prices for renewable energy drive ACT electricity bill increase
Jasper Lindell DECEMBER 21 2018 - 12:00AM

Higher prices for renewable energy and distribution in the ACT will drive an $87 increase to the average territory household power bill over the two years from June, the Australian Energy Market Commission says.

The average annual bill for a typical residential electricity customer would rise by 5 per cent between June 2019 and June 2021, according to the commission.

The average annual bill will rise from $1717 in the current financial year to $1804 in 2020-21.

Does 5 per cent not seem that much to anyone else?

Plus mines well below that. So it won't go up as much. So frankly couldn't give a rats.

Labor and the Greens gave us carbon taxes - the cheapest and most economically efficient way to reduce GHG emissions. The coalition got rid of them. In comparison, MRET's, subsidies etc cost us way more, as does the uncertainty of a stupid policy that is bound to be replaced as soon as common sense kicks in.

The coalition is to blame for high electricity prices. They need to get it over and done with so the industry can start making big investments again with at least some certainty of what their returns will be.

I think our good PM needs to reign in the private sector that they allowed to go private as its a essential service. I don't know if making it public would be best but definitely need a lot more regulating... Wink
