Interesting.
Many years ago I was in a chemically altered state. I had just finished playing a very story driven sci fi roleplaying game called Mass Effect.
In this story, organic life was wiped out to extinction by synthetic god machines called 'the Reapers'. The whole purpose of the story was for your human character to 'break the cycle'.
While the plot is cheesy on the surface, there was some deep philosophical meaning to it, which I think was the reason why I fell in love with the game so much. It became so much more than just shooting stuff for fun.
Anyway the big bad reapers stated something along the lines of, "Organic life exists because we allow it. It will end because we demand it."
Which, going back to my altered state, I got to thinking: What if reality isn't "real" as we know it? Why is it that the human mind can work so similarly to a computer, in the sense it can be programmed? All of our emotions, to something as simple as taste, touch and sound.. all programmed to "feel" a certain way.
What if we are all just machines, one giant cosmic computer system, and we have been duped to believe we are organic and adopt "career paths", hobbies, interests to emulate meaning in our pathetic lives?
