Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, has sent a team to investigate footage of one of the company’s cars appearing to explode.

The footage, which went viral on Chinese social media platform, Weibo, shows a parked Tesla Model S sedan start to emit smoke before suddenly erupting into flames that lapped nearby cars.

In a statement posted to Tesla’s official Weibo account, the company said it has sent a team to investigate the incident, which the video timestamp indicates took place on Sunday evening (local time).

“After finding out about this incident in Shanghai, we immediately sent a team to the scene,” Tesla said on its official Weibo account.
“We are currently contacting relevant departments to understand the situation. Based on current information, no one was hurt.”

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the origins of the video, which Weibo users said was taken in Shanghai.

The reports of an exploding Tesla come as the company attempts to revive its sales in China . They have been hit by China-US trade tensions.

The company imports all the cars it sells in China, but is building a factory in Shanghai that will manufacture Model 3 cars in the initial phase and help it minimise the impact of the trade war and tariffs.

Earlier in April, Mr Musk unveiled an ambitious plan to convert 86 hectares of farmland outside of Shanghai into a new factory that would produce Model S vehicles within one year.

Failure to launch
The detonating Model S is the second setback to rock companies related to Mr Musk this week, after tests conducted on a SpaceX’s Crew Dragon rocket resulted in an ‘anomaly’ which, according to Florida Today,  blanketed NASA’s Cape Canaveral in smoke for several hours.

NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed that SpaceX had provided the space agency with a report on the ‘anomaly’, adding that identifying issues like this was the reason rockets are tested.

“NASA has been notified about the results of the SpaceX static fire test and the anomaly that occurred during the final test. We will work closely to ensure we safely move forward with our commercial crew program,” he said.

Tesla stocks’ boom and bust
Tesla’s fortunes have oscillated wildly in the past year as investors increasingly question promises made by Mr Musk.
Stock in the company started 2019 trading at about $310, reaching $347 by January 17 before descending rapidly to $287 by January 23.

The share price also took a hit in 2018 after the US Securities and Exchange Commission ousted Mr Musk, the company chair, after the billionaire entrepreneur’s joke about a possible share buyback caused “significant market disruption”.

Mr Musk was replaced by Australian woman and former Telstra executive Robyn Denholm.

There have been at least 14 instances of Tesla cars catching fire since 2013, with the majority occurring after a crash.

The clear lesson - DO NOT PARK YOUR CAR NEAR A DANGEROUS UNSAFE TESLA!!!!!!!

On the freeway keep well clear of any dangerous unsafe Tesla in case a wheel falls off!!!!!!!

Parked Tesla Model S Catches Fire in China, Team Sent to Investigate

U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla Inc on Monday said it has sent a team to investigate a video on Chinese social media which showed a parked Tesla Model S car exploding, the latest in a string of fire incidents involving Tesla's cars. The video, time stamped Sunday evening and widely shared on China's Twitter-like Weibo, shows the parked EV emit smoke and burst into flames seconds later. A video purportedly of the aftermath showed a line of three cars completely destroyed.

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the origins of the videos, which Weibo users said were taken in Shanghai. The cause of the explosion could not be immediately ascertained from the videos. "We immediately sent a team onsite and we're supporting local authorities to establish the facts. From what we know now, no one was harmed," Tesla said in a statement.

Good or bad, negative or positive I will post anything about Tesla or EVs in China. This happened today in Shanghai, China 🇨🇳 1st generation Tesla Model S caught Fire underground car park.

The automaker declined comment further when contacted by Reuters. There have been at least 14 instances of Tesla cars catching fire since 2013, with the majority occurring after a crash.

The automaker has said its EVs are approximately 10 times less likely to experience a fire than petrol-powered cars, based on its fleet of over 500,000 vehicles which have driven more than 10 billion miles. It did not specify whether the statistic referred to normal use or involving accidents.

REPUTATION
The incident comes as Tesla tries to push sales in China, where its prices were impacted by tit-for-tat tariffs imposed during Sino-U.S. trade tensions last year.

The automaker currently imports all the cars it sells in China, but is building a factory in Shanghai that will initially make its Model 3 and help reduce the impact of a trade war.

In March, Tesla was also on the receiving end of a labelling mix-up at Shanghai customs resulting in clearance for a batch of Model 3 cars being temporarily suspended.

Analysts said the latest fire incident would likely increase attention on the safety of electric vehicles but was unlikely to have a significant impact on Tesla's sales or reputation in China while the cause was being investigated.

"Tesla had fire incidents before, but they didn't have a big impact on its reputation in China," said analyst Alan Kang at LMC Automotive.

"Since its consumer base is not particularly conservative, and China is pushing the electric vehicle market, if this incident is just accidental, it will not have a big impact on Tesla," he said.

"Tesla self-ignites" was one of the most popular hashtags on Weibo on Monday, racking up over 20 million clicks. Some users urged the automaker to quickly find the cause, whereas others speculated over the impact to the value of Tesla cars currently on the road. Still more found humour in the situation.

"One lesson I learnt from the Shanghai self-exploding Tesla: Don't park your car next to a Tesla," said one commentator.

See it all here

so 13 cars caught on fire and 500,000 Tesla's and most of them have been after a mayor crash....so far no deaths from the actual fires, the crashes are usually so severe the occupants are dead from the accident.
Just in the USA there are 840 car fires a day and 540 deaths a year .

Most Major accidents the Cars catch on fire, so a bit of perspective needs to be in order here, jules goes on like Tesla's are the only vehicles on the road that catch on fire....

as a side note Tesla use a new battery on the Model3 and none so far have caught on fire and looking like they will change the other 2 models over as well, after all they don't want people to stop buying thair cars.. Cheesy

SO a car catches on Fire and Tesla are concerned enough about their customers and reputation to go and Personally investigate it .
How can this be a bad thing, most vehicle companies don't give a rat ass about their customers, and IF it's a problem with the car then you can be sure Tesla will fix it as well.
As it stands no one knows why it has caught on fire, it could be a fault or from a accident or even arson, until reports come out we wont know. Wink

Dopey intellectually handicapped Tweedledee just cannot help displaying how messed up her feeble mind really is.

Wasting space by copying my clever post and then adding a line of indescribably smelly dribble must take an awful lot of "intelligence".

But then Tweedledee is a Greeny Tesla Fan Girl.
