Ice shelf breaking up? We must be on the verge of an imminent ice age! This is just the old ice getting out of the way for the fresh new ice.

So tell us what happens when the ice melts. And the ocean heat can escape to space.

Don't be shy, tell us. Wink

Al Gore and Monk warned us but we didn't listen.

Like I said, it's just making way for the fresh new ice. Those ice sheets will start coming back any day now.

That Great Acceleration episode last night was good.
Going by all the doom and gloom that has brought in the Anthropocene Epoch after WW1. Humanity should die out from a surface temperature reaching in the 60's and floods galore with the Volcano's (trying to cool the atmosphere), earthquakes and mega-tsunamis like wild fires in devastation.
Humanity would be lucky to scratch a permanent living.
Might get a bit like Venus.
...unless all out thermo-nuclear war turns earth into Mars.

So what is the postulated CO2 level required to reach the 60's? And at what latitudes? Wink

And I had to wear a jumper yesterday so clearly global warming isn't happening

Arctic sea-ice shrinks to near record low extent
By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent

    21 September 2020

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-54211760

This summer's Arctic sea-ice shrank to its second lowest ever extent in the era of satellite observation.

The floes withdrew to just under 3.74 million sq km (1.44 million sq miles) last week, preliminary data indicates.

The only time this minimum has been beaten in the 42-year spacecraft record was 2012 when the pack ice was reduced to 3.41 million sq km.

Shorter autumn days and encroaching cold mean the floes are now starting to regrow.

Selective quoting Bobby. Naughty you.

You could have included this.

"That's bad news for the climate. Extensive sea-ice helps cool the Arctic and the rest of the planet. In its absence, more sunlight will be absorbed by the darker surface waters of the ocean, which will promote further warming and further loss of ice"

I don't normally quote entire articles.
The link is sufficient.

True.... then I was just highlighting something from the article because your quote gave me a different impression of a key point of the article.

No worries.

Notice that Monk never provides
any evidence for global warming?

He complains about me yet I'm always the one posting evidence that agrees with him.  Smiley

Actually that's bass ackward. The sea ice acts as a solar blanket and prevents heat loss to the atmosphere. IF the sea ice all melts there is more exposed area to give up heat. It is a negative feedback. And that's why there is no runaway global warming; even in the past when temperatures were warmer than now.

The area of clouds controls the area of sea ice.

"This is a summary annotated map Location of Barrow of the break-up forecast for landfast ice at the Chukchi Sea coast at Barrow, Alaska. In typical years, the timing of break-up is associated with the amount of incoming solar energy (i.e., essentially, how sunny or cloudy it is). "

No -
white ice reflects sunlight and heat but
water absorbs heat.

You're both right; it just depends on the time of year.

Quote:
In the winter when solar heating is at a minimum and air temperatures are lowest, the sea ice insulates the ocean from losing heat to the atmosphere above. Conversely, during summer months, the sea ice has a cooling effect as it prevents the ocean from absorbing as much heat from solar radiation or from the atmosphere. In particular the sea ice has a higher reflectivity (or 'albedo') than the ocean which causes more of the sun's rays to be reflected back into space rather than being absorbed by the Earth's climate. The presence of snow on top of the sea ice exaggerates both the insulating and the reflecting effects of sea ice.
