This past weekend, a small Russian town in the Arctic Circle hit a scorching temperature, 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. While the temperature has to be verified by experts, if it stands, it will be the hottest temperature ever recorded in the Arctic Circle.

Unfortunately for them it wasn't a first for the Arctic -

2 things to note Rounding up from 100.4ºF to 101F, and also the reading was in C and converted. I wonder how they got that 101ºC? Fahrenheit thermometers were wider than 0.5ºC.

" If you think this summer’s heat wave is hot, just be glad you weren’t around in 1915.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Alaska was 100 degrees on June 27, 1915, in Fort Yukon, according to official records of the National Weather Service. Records date back to 1904."

It is well known that the poles warm faster as a result of climate change.

So the poles warmed faster in 1915? Grin Grin Grin Grin

You make good points Lee.

However it is still concerning that it's so hot in Russia.

Hottest temperature on Earth' as Death Valley, US hits 54.4C

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53788018

...

What could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth - 130F (54.4C) - may have been reached in Death Valley National Park, California.

The recording is being verified by the US National Weather Service.

It comes amid a heatwave on the US's west coast, where temperatures are forecast to rise further this week.

The scorching conditions have led to two days of blackouts in California, after a power plant malfunctioned on Saturday.
What were the previous records?

Sunday's reading was recorded in Furnace Creek in Death Valley.

Before this, the hottest temperature reliably recorded on Earth was 129.2F (54C) - also in Death Valley in 2013.

A higher reading of 134F, or 56.6C a century earlier, also in Death Valley, is disputed. It is believed by some modern weather experts to have been erroneous, along with several other searing temperatures recorded that summer.

Dangerous heat wave forecast for south-west US
Summers could become 'too hot for humans'
Last decade confirmed as hottest on record

According to a 2016 analysis from weather historian Christopher Burt, other temperatures in the region recorded in 1913 do not corroborate the Death Valley reading.

Another record temperature for the planet - 131F, or 55C - was recorded in Tunisia in 1931, but Mr Burt said this reading, as well as others recorded in Africa during the colonial era, had "serious credibility issues".

Parts of Iran can get as hot as 79C
Leaves Death Valley for dead.

An empty Lake Eyre can get so hot, the flies don't even go there.

Here is a piece in how it gets close to that in other parts.

The heat index in Bandar Mahshahr, a city of over 100,000 atop the Persian Gulf, reached an astonishing 164 degrees (73 Celsius) on Friday afternoon , according the Weather Channel. The heat index is also known as the “feels-like” temperature, which combines air temperature with relative humidity, which soars during the summer due the city’s proximity to water.

It gets 50C above in the USA and the yanks cry its the hottest place on earth - a world most of them don't know exists. Roll Eyes

" Bandar Mahshahr clocked an air temperature of 46°C (115°F) and a dewpoint temperature of 32°C (90°F), creating a heat index of 165°F. A dewpoint temperature is an indication of the level of humidity.

Though there are no official records on heat indexes, Bandar Mahshahr’s 165°F registers as the second highest ever recorded – 178°F in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, on July 8, 2003 is the highest ever recorded, when there was an air temperature of 42°C (108°F) and a dewpoint temperature of 35°C (95°F). "

Record-breaking heat in the north

Joel Pippard, Sunday August 23, 2020 - 15:42 EST

While it may be bitterly cold in the south, heat records have been tumbling in northern Australia this weekend.

Yampi Sound in Western Australia’s Kimberley region may have just taken the Australian August record for the hottest maximum temperature. Yampi Sound reached a sweat-inducing 40.7 degrees on Saturday. If validated, this will beat out the previous Australian record set on 27th August 1970 at Kalumburu of 40.0 degrees. West Roebuck has also beat the previous record on Sunday, reaching 40.4 degrees.

Some other long-standing records have also been busted. Broome has recorded its hottest August day in 123 years of records on Sunday, by reaching a searing 38.6 degrees. Port Hedland in the WA Pilbara region heated to a scorching 37.0 degrees on Sunday, making it its hottest August day in 102 years of records.

No it's not undeniable evidence of anything
I've told you this about a million times
You have to learn the difference between weather and climate

Climate change:

Warmth shatters section of Greenland ice shelf

By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-54127279

A big chunk of ice has just broken away from the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf - 79N, or Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden - in north-east Greenland.

The ejected section covers about 110 square km; satellite imagery shows it to have shattered into many small pieces.

The loss is further evidence say scientists of the rapid climate changes taking place in Greenland.

"The atmosphere in this region has warmed by about 3C since 1980," said Dr Jenny Turton.

"And in 2019 and 2020, it saw record summer temperatures," the polar researcher at Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany told BBC News.

Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden is roughly 80km long by 20km wide and is the floating front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream - where it flows off the land into the ocean to become buoyant.

At its leading edge, the 79N glacier splits in two, with a minor offshoot turning directly north. It's this offshoot, or tributary, called Spalte Glacier, that has now disintegrated.

Ice shelf breaking up? We must be on the verge of an imminent ice age! This is just the old ice getting out of the way for the fresh new ice.
