That is Vampyroteuthis Infernalis: the Vampire Squid from Hell.

I think you may have remembered one of my 'old' names here on OzPol.
Like wow Agnes. I am astonished at your perceptive memory.

Well what do you know but I think you credit me with a bit too much here- anyway yes you are right-it is a vampire squid from hell-nasty looking creature it is- I think you would have to dive pretty deep to come across one even so ?

--This a 4D ultrasound of a dolphin in utero, which captures the length, width and depth of the fetus ultimately producing a three-dimensional image. The process is non-invasive and requires the dolphin to float on its side. From there, a veterinarian can run a transducer over the dolphin's body for the ultrasound.

Well maybe you 'fluked' it like I did with Oceans_Blue.
But yes, I once was the Vampire Squid.
And they are indeed 'deep down' in the Abyss zone.
I don't mind these types of squid as they are small and harmless. I liked it for its 'prehistoric' background.

As for the Dolphin in utero. Amazing.

There are a lot of weird critters in the deep.
The Blobfish is in Australian waters beyond 2000ft and I hope he doesn't feel as bad as he looks.

The Blobfish  (Psychrolutes marcidus) is real.

What a classic catching a flying fish, are you sure that is not just another fishermans tale! I like flying fish, they look like evolution in the making.

I'll try and find a picture of a Blob Fish in its natural state - it looks different to the photo above (gravity coming down hard).

Flying Fish must be one of the dumbest evolutionary adaptions. The Fish now have 'two' predators after them. First is other fish and now, many sea-birds snatch them from mid-air when they fly. They have 'doubled' their chances of being taken as food.
So unless they adapt to fly even better and become truly a new 'evolutionary' branch of 'fish' in the skies...

Very good eating they are.
i don't think Blob fish would be though  Tongue

Blobfish are gelatinous critters adapted to the deep, they taste like chicken.
The flying fish have a tough time of it but still they survive, they may split up and one heads for the skies and the other heads for the deep to ensure survival of the species.
