Do you doublethink?
Jan 27th, 2019 at 9:16pm

What is doublethink?

According to Wikipedia:

"Doublethink is the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct, often in distinct social contexts.[1] Doublethink is related to, but differs from, hypocrisy and neutrality. Also related is cognitive dissonance, in which contradictory beliefs cause conflict in one's mind. Doublethink is notable due to a lack of cognitive dissonance—thus the person is completely unaware of any conflict or contradiction.

My assertion is that most all devout religious people engage in some form of doublethink.

I agree - Christians, Jews & Muslims believe the world is only 6,000 years old
yet they also know that it's about 4.5 billion years old.

I always 'double-think' because I have two hemisphere's of the brain that need to work. I call it something akin to being mentally ambidextrous.

I always look at it this way. Until you consider 'both' versions - even if they 'conflict', then you will never see the 'reason' for their conflict for starters.

I could up the ante and say - there are 8 Races and 8 Regions of the world, so there is 8 'right' answers to a problem. How good is that!  Cool You have 8 'choices', rather than just 'one'.

That is a silly, unreasonable statement.

THE TRUTH....
Neither myself, nor any 'Young Earth' Christian, has any way to prove [to another person] that the earth is only 6,000 years old.

AND, neither you, nor man's science, can prove that the earth is [about] 4.5 billion years old.

Both positions, are merely [arguable] suppositions that can be made, based upon current hypotheses and evidences.

[Science has proven that the speed of light is not a constant, in time and space and medium.]

You know Yadda.

There has been many a Ship's Captain that put his faith in the Compass, for it can draw a straight line right across the map from start to destination.
Many such a captain have ended up at the bottom of the sea - because they blindly put their faith in such an instrument (of Science) and ignored all the weather signs (birds, winds, skies, swell, etc) about the approaching storm.

So too, are those who 'blindly' put their faith in 3 old books that are a reflection of a world, before the rest of the world was discovered ...and 'seen' to be believed.

Your devotion to Christianity is admired, but it will betray you one day.  Sad

No it won't.

We, men, do not know,       what our real circumstances are [in this 'life'].

I do not take psychotropic drugs.

But i have experienced many challenging things that i cannot explain.

I read scripture.

What i read in scripture, to some degree, makes some sense, and goes to some way to explain my experiences.

I am just searching.       ....that is all.

I am a curious and inquisitive individual.

But the content of this audio file is the most plausible and clear explanation i have come across of who God is, and it gives a satisfactory solution, to your query...

And, it is wholly a scriptural based explanation too!

Your Religion is compromised by both Time and Space.
It is from the Middle-East and of a time long ago.
Even now - Christianity is in the age of the Prophet Hitler (Redneck), no longer the Messiah Jesus (Gay).
The tide has turned and you have not set your sail accordingly to the winds of change.
Jesus opened Christianity, Hitler closed it.

You are now in Australia: A 'new' Religion must be created!

Pushing Christianity here is like driving a car on the ocean (no, I don't mean via a Ferry  Roll Eyes)

Is it ?

REALITY....

In this waking consciousness, have access to the now moment.

And, i have 'possession', of a sense of [my own] self awareness.

That is all.

That,    ....is 'reality'.

BUT ALSO....

I'm not a 'victim', in, or of, what i experience in this life.

I am a man, i have the 'life' of a man,      and i appear to have self awareness, and     i experience     a [this] journey through what we have come to refer to, as 'time and space'.

AND, importantly,        i am not an automaton, something which can only respond to experiences in a predetermined way.

I am able to choose,        how i respond to my experiences, in this [my] life.

I am.

I choose, therefore, i am.

.

"...I have been a stranger in a strange land."

Psalms 119:54
Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

Proverbs 3:1
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2  For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
4  So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no."

A bit like AGW deniers?

They accept that we are experiencing record high temperatures, both maximum and minimum temps being higher than ever recorded - even when Solar Irradiance is at a low - yet refuse to accept that greenhouse gasses are the obvious cause of the record heat.  Shocked

Light is a very strange phenomenon.

It "slows" when entering a different medium - air to glass for example, and maintains that "new constant" yet "speeds up again" when exiting the glass back to air.

What is the mechanism that "speeds it up again"?  Huh

Which reminds me ...

E=MC2

As things stand, this actually rules out the ability to travel really really fast in a spaceship, because for something with mass to achieve something close to the speed of light requires either: almost infinite energy, or almost infinite time to be achieved.

I'm a little sad about that, it means there can't ever be "warp speed" like in Star Trek.   Cry

Our actions [choices] in this world, [i believe] are a reflection of what our morals, and a reflection of what our beliefs are.

Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

3  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
4  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

One more while we are in the mood to question these things:

A "black hole" has "zero volume" yet "infinite mass or density"?

Say what?  Huh

The word 'infinite', which human science [and men], use as a 'descriptor',
is better stated as, 'we don't know how to quantify this yet'.             Wink

And, i cannot conceive, that a "black hole", truly, has "zero volume".          more  Wink

No - I never denied that.
CO2 is one of many greenhouse gases that can affect the climate.
Dust and SO2 from volcanoes can cool the climate.

Incorrect, science can prove that the earth is 4.5 billion years old.

Pre-suppositions are not necessary. We KNOW that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. It is a FACT.

Yes - a scientific fact.
Any error in the amount would be very small.

Correct. I can't believe you and I are actually agreeing on this point.

Really - I thought that you and many others
here were overwhelmed about my scientific understanding of the world & the universe?

Well, as I recall, don't you deny that an increase in co2 causes long-term warming of global temperatures?

No - I never denied that.
CO2 is one of many greenhouse gases that can affect the climate.
Dust and SO2 from volcanoes can cool the climate.

So, do you believe in Climate Change?

Of course I do - the climate has always been changing.
It was much warmer in the Roman & medieval warming periods
than it is now yet at those times the CO2 level was lower.

We also had many mini ice ages.

Explain that?

Boat turn-backs work spectacularly. But if you are a UN cadre, doublethink kicks in:

The UN refugee agency’s Indonesia chief, Thomas Vargas, told The Australian that turn-back policies such as those used by Australia’s Border Force to prevent boatloads of asylum-seekers reaching Australia “just don’t work”.

With Labor, thee boats will start again. Kevni swore never to let the boats start and then let them start. Labor has been captured by non-working class activists and cannot be, must not be trusted.

Science is becoming a industry of many 'double-thinks' ("yeah - nah" car ad?).

They have found a Star that is much older than the so-called estimated age of the Universe.
They have found that Comets emit an electrically charged 'tail' and its not a dirty snowball 'vapor' like they 'thought'.

Did we all 'Double-Think' before the Crop Circles, Big foot, Loch Ness Monster and more - were all 'proven' and 'admitted' hoaxes?

Was Mohommedism the 'Double-think' of Judaism with Christianity the confused piggy in the middle (east)?

I bet the Scientists of the CSIRO are doing a Double-think about the stupid idea of introducing Pacu Piranha into PNG waters (now turned carnivorous).

Maybe they will 'Double-think' about opening Australia up to the possibility of a network of 'Canal' (and pipe) systems across the country in regards to 'WATER' availability, containment, transfer, capture, irrigation and turning the Australian interior into something akin to the Nile Delta.

Did  you know it takes females less time to transfer the thought process from one hemisphere of their brains to the other, than males?  Cheesy Luckily for males, they only think about making babies and the latest beauty product - while males write religions about 'how to think and what to believe'.  Grin

They don't. Under Duttons watch Australia has received a RECORD number of asylum claims from people entering Australia. Boat turn backs have been an abysmal failure.

They come on a visa you know who they are, Gino.  They come on a boat, you don't know who they are.  You sort them accordingly.

This shouldn't be beyond you, Gino.

Keating gave him a visa despite advice against it.

There is no cure for Labor buggerwittery - you are exhibit Numero Uno, Gino.  Nothing is too fkkn idiotic for you as long as it's against the interest of ordinary working people. labor is the enemy of the working class and you are with Bill and Chloe all the way.

I think Science in the last 20 years has contradicted itself a lot. It's like they have reached a dead end, for want of Hubble and Probe photo tours.

Doublethink isnt the same as being wrong. Doublethink is holding two (or more) conflicting beliefs simultaneously.
