I nominate the character of Samwise Gamgee.
Whose 'strength' of who he was in that he was the epitome of the 'Shire Folk'.
He made friends to Frodo (Orphan: no family) with as much love and honor as he would his own family, past and future.
He helped Frodo 'belong' to the Shire.
He took on much in the journey, knowing that Frodo would need to save as much of his strength for the end - when the time came to destroy the Ring.
Samwise knew what was at stake, even though many considered him a stupid gardener (See movie: Being There ).
