Victorian man charged with sending 38 packages

The Victorian man charged with sending 38 packages containing asbestos to international consulates and embassies across Australia has fronted court wearing a Minions T-shirt with the slogan "more than meets the eye".

Savas Avan, 49, was arrested at his home in the town of Shepparton north of Melbourne, hours after suspicious packages containing white powder were delivered to consulates and embassies in Melbourne and Canberra on Wednesday, prompting a huge emergency response.

The white powder was mailed through Australia Post and is suspected to have been sourced from Mr Avan's home, although it is still being forensically tested by federal police.

Only 29 of the 38 packages have been discovered so far, but federal police say they have put processes in place to recover the outstanding parcels safely.
