Car surfing
Jan 8th, 2019 at 3:02pm

The police should drop the charges, it's probably some kind of first nations tradition or sumfin.

Child filmed riding on car roof rack sparks wave of online abuse, leaving family traumatised

he boy was filmed by motorists and home CCTV cameras on Friday afternoon as the SUV drove through several suburbs on streets including Tonkin Highway, which has a speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour.

Several motorists tried to flag down the boy's mother — who only wished to be known as Erica — as she was driving the car and alert her to the danger.

Police said the driver then stopped and placed the child, who the family say climbed onto the roof by himself, back in the car before driving away.

Police were then called and pulled the car over at a petrol station on Nicholson Road in Harrisdale. There were three children in the car at the time — two secured in child restraint seats and a 4-year-old boy who police allege was unrestrained.

A 36-year-old woman has since been charged with dangerous driving and summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

But family spokesman Gerry Georgatos, from the National Indigenous Critical Response Service (NICRS), said he would like to see the charges dropped, because the woman was not aware her child was on top of the car.

"I'd like to see the charge removed, I don't see there is any reason for dangerous driving because there was no presumption of the mother dangerously driving," he said.

Freakish' incident hits family hard

The family fronted the media on Tuesday for the first time since the footage was broadcast and described the event as "freakish".

"What could have happened has shell-shocked the family, upset them to no end, as it would any family, any household, anywhere in the world," Mr Georgatos said.

"This is an extraordinary event, it was a freakish event, it was something unforeseen."

Mr Georgatos said the family was incredibly thankful the boy was not injured during the incident.

"They are just thankful, they are just counting their blessings that a miracle actually occurred," he said.

"A miracle occurred that the child wasn't actually injured, didn't fall off the roof rack, and this is where their trauma and their grief is acute at this stage at what could have happened.

"It would have been a shock to him too when the car started moving.

"Now it's about supporting the young child, supporting the other siblings and supporting the mother and father."

Mr Georgatos said it was the first time the boy, who has five siblings, had climbed onto the roof of the car, after he managed to free himself from his child restraint.

He said the first thing the child's parents did after getting home was remove the roof rack from the vehicle.
Online trolls add to family's pain

Mr Georgatos said the NICRS would be providing trauma recovery support to the family to help them get through the episode.

He said the family's grief was compounded by the strong public reaction to the airing of the footage, with a wave of online criticism directed towards them.

"I've read some of the comments and that public spectacle that trolls sometimes jump on, and they are disturbing," he said.

"They are disturbing and they are cruel, they are insensitive.

"That also compounds trauma to be exposed to such public brutality."

....and the kid was well on the spectrum, quite capable of getting there without the driver knowing.

Not seeing a child on the roof before you drive away. Was she drunk?

A 4-year-old kid in a nappy? Never mind who put him up on the roof rack and drove off, at speed. "He likes it", she allegedly said.

Indigenous? Drunk? Hubby ran off with another woman?

My MUM would never have done that.  Wink

This is why there's a stolen generation.

FBS!!!!!!!

But Mr Georgatos said it wasn't fair to ask whether 36-year-old Erica was doing any sort of checks on her children, such as looking in her rear-vision mirror during the journey]

Gee, retard, why did you move from being accusative that she did not see the kid there before she drove off, and now not checking in the rearview mirror to see if he had taken the belt off etc after she had driven off.

Did the facts get in your way again, you racist bigotted retard?

I'll bet a few more get in your way soon as well.

THAT KID IS A LEGEND!!!!!

Fair dinkum, that 4 year old 'Autistic' sure as hell got up there of his own accord, where 'normal' kids would fail. He's a natural 'rock climber' and will probably conquer Everest & K2 a few times when he is much older.  Cool

I've seen many 2,3,4 year old kids do some amazing 'physical' feats and not just 'autistic' kids. (Like that man I pass in the car, while he jogs - who once jogged all the way to Perth from the East coast of NSW  Shocked) Would you but know some of the situations I also found myself in when I was yay-young knee high than a amoeba.

That kid climbed up and onto the roof-cage of the car to be with his Mummy. She wouldn't take him (inside the car), being a single mum - probably couldn't afford a car seat to do so. So 'he' initiated something so as not to be at home alone. He snuck out and climbed up the car to be sneakily on top. Mummy would come out, thinking him in his bedroom. Nope - he's out the bedroom window and ran to prepare for his joy ride.

Now here's the clincher:  Wink
He consciously 'holds' onto the cage knowing full well what would happen if he didn't. He held tight at all times, while she unwittingly rounded corners without any obvious sign of 'extra' caution.

I think that kid deserves the following awards!!!

Bravery Award (a Son who wants to 'be there' for his mother  Cry)
Spartan Award: For he who tackles any 'beast' (in this case - a Vehicle of Man) above and beyond his 'accepted' ability.
Gotlund Viking Award: For he who begins his path in life - so early in life, due to being aware of his destiny via some natural 'Australian Consciousness' must surely be 'Enlightened'.  Shocked
Dreamtime Award: His future is set, at just the age of 4.

You didn't moan at JS when he morphed the kid in your story into a Aboriginal with a beer bottle. Why not? Because you like him and he's on your team?

Sorry, wasn't a beer bottle.
