Bogus cheap computers on eBay
Jan 7th, 2019 at 12:43pm

I had a couple of experiences attempting to buy ridiculously cheap high-end laptop computers on eBay which fizzled out because they were bogus and I did not get billed.

I have also reported on eBay such offers which were evidently bogus because of first time seller with no reputation, ridiculously low price and free international delivery.

I wonder at the motives of those who post these items. The latest one I signed for was:

MSI GL73 8RD-282 17.3" Gaming Laptop i7-8750H 8GB DDR4 1TB HDD GTX1050Ti 4GB US$ 100+

The seller is reportedly reputable 74 sales 100% positive feedback and if the sale is bogus I am protected by eBay buyer protection and PayPal.

Usually, on these bogus entries the sale gets registered, confirmed, and accepted by eBay but delivery never occurs and billing does not progress beyond registration.

As I expected it was a bogus listing and has been canceled.

Quote:
You were recently involved in a transaction for the following item:
- MSI GL73 8RD-282 17.3" Gaming Laptop i7-8750H 8GB DDR4 1TB HDD GTX1050Ti 4GB

We’re writing to let you know that an unauthorized third party may have accessed the seller’s account to list this item. The item has been removed from the site, and the transaction was canceled.

Not sure what the point is - maybe because ebay registers it as a 'sale', they mark the seller as more reputable and put them higher on the search rankings whenever they sell real stuff? But they're relying on not getting reported or negative feedback when the buyer ends up not getting a purchase...

eBay claimed the Seller's account had been hacked. I don't believe it.

1. What would be the point?

2. Why did the Seller not notice bogus deals on his account?

There is a lot of bogus sales activity on eBay.

I am wealthy and make a lot of money from dividends.

I already have 2 x i7 laptop computers and my wife has an Apple laptop and we have 3 x older retired laptops which we have not disposed of. If the deal had gone through I would have had 3 x i7 laptop current model computers.
