About time - mobile phones while driving

About bloody time start catching the farquits!

New cameras detect thousands of drivers a day using their mobile phone behind the wheel

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-16/new-cameras-detect-drivers-using-their-mo...

...

Drivers may think twice about using their mobile phones, after the NSW Government announced a trial of world-first technology able to catch them in the act while behind the wheel.

The new high-definition cameras have already detected more than 11,000 drivers a day a using their mobile phones during a month-long test during October, Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said.

"Shockingly, one driver was pictured with two hands on his phone while his passenger steered the car travelling at 80kph, putting everyone on the road at risk," she said.

Three technology companies took part in the testing period, with Australian company Acusensus chosen the trial their cameras on the M4 and Anzac Parade from January.

The cameras will use artificial intelligence to detect people illegally using their phones while driving and can be used in all weather, day or night.

Mrs Pavey said no fines would be issued during this period.

"If, at the end of the trial, the technology proves to be foolproof, the community will be made area of its permanent use," she said.

Mrs Pavey said there was strong community support for the cameras and she hoped they would change driver behaviour to save lives.

The cameras were developed by Alex Jannink from Acusensus after his friend was killed by a driver distracted while using their mobile phone.

Yes, this is a good news story.

I would like to be able to send in my footage off my navman of all the people I have captured talking on their phones.

Yep....

It's about time.

After all, speeding revenue is going down because cars have cruise control and people are learning to slow down on down hill runs where the sneaky cameras hide.

The grubberment need a new revenue stream,  so why not mobile phones?

Then they will look at anyone eating in their car.

Then anyone who dares to blink while driving

Then anyone who takes their hand off the wheel ( better get automatics people)

This is just another cash grab by a greedy, useless and pathetic grubberment.

If they fixed the roads and prevented head on crashes they woukd save 100 times as many lives as they have people fooled they will save with this rubbish.

Cops are no longer that to protect us and chase criminals

Now they are simply revenue collectors for a greedy, immoral and corrupt grubberment.

Meh. Yesterday I was driving across the SHB and some FOTB Asian woman changed lanes twice and nearly hit cars in other lanes. I watched her drive up the Pac Hwy until about St Leonards, crossing lane lines, stopped in the middle of an intersection and a few other weird things.

I can drive better than that while simultaneously texting, making a vegemite sandwich and posting a story to Auspol about Indian rapists. Wink

And how many people die on country roads in head on crashes because the grubberment will not spend the money they take from motorists on better roads?

This is nothing but another cash grab.

Like everything the grubberment does

It's always about working out how to get the people's hard earned cash

Any way, morally corrupt and semi legal way they can.

Can the camera detect people making a vegemite sanga? How many demerit points is that worth?

Slightly off topic, I got a fine for speeding while overtaking, the guy was driving under the speed limit. Surely for safety you can go over the limit in a brief burst to get around someone???

wouldnt it be better if all cars were fitted with a device that  switched off all mobiles while the car is in motion....

seems pretty simple to me... a car can stop you driving if you blow over the limit....its can control the speed... in some cases it doesnt even need a driver...

so how hard is this?

It seems simple to simpletons.

Easier just to make the human driver redundant altogether so we stop putting idiots in control of 1.5t projectiles.

You and I have agreed on this for ages, cods.

It's not hard to do.

No, you are actually breaking the law.

I was booked once for avoiding a crash by swerving onto the verge in the oncoming traffic lane.
There were no cars in that lane and the car behind me, and the cop car behind that car ran into the suddenly stopped vehicle in front.
It ran into a horse that jumped the fence.

I had a good distance in front but the vehicles behind me, including the cop, were on my arse.

After they all smashed into the car in front, the cop jumped out and ran over to me and told me I crossed over double yellow lines ( they were yellow in them days)

I said I was avoiding an accident because of the morons tail gating me.
He proceeded to book me.
I took it to court and the judge asked me if I checked for oncoming traffic
I said I wouldn't have swerved had there been.

He dismissed the case.
The cop was pissed
I asked the cop if he would like me to testify that he was tailgating and he gave me a filthy look.

Fact is
You stray even one inch outside the stupidity of the law, and they will be on to you.
Because they have no idea how to drive safely.
