Where's The money coming from?.   Sad

Do they come with the deisel exhaust snorkels or is that optional extra ?? Cheesy LOL

We should have bought off the shelf nuke subs.
What a silly idea to buy diesel rubbish.
It's old WW2 technology.

I agree with you Bobby.

Thanks Captain and you can be the Captain of the first sub.  Wink

I agree with you both....Go figure???

Thanks - why not get nuke subs?
The French can do the maintenance and provide the training.

Australian submarines. Another incipient SNAFU following the Collins class SNAFU.

Australia doesn't have the money, the balls, and the people who could operate a credible submarine force.

The distances are far too great and its likely that the death rate of Australian submariners will be too high.

We are having a lot of trouble hiring people to man the Collins subs.
It's a very dangerous job.

$50 billion.....!

Imagine all the revenue our government could have had from sales tax, income tax, import duty have I missed anything.

Fair enough we may not have the technology but we can buy that, the construction should have been in Australia.

Not to mention all the aussies with work and money.

Mal is a traitor and should be be jailed for this.

Nukes are 'noisy' compared to D/Es ..... and certain Asian nations have the best anti-submarine equipment in the world.... Japan had that reputation because they were brought down largely by the US submarine campaign in WW II, which isolated the home islands long before any troops landed on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.....

Just remember guys.
'WE' built James Cameron's Submersible to take him 11kms down, up in the Pyrmont Dockyards.
It was the correct design for underwater - not the 'Western' aeroplane style that keeps appearing in their subs.
If you know how water works - you design it like a Fish, not a Bird  Roll Eyes (stoopid Westerners!)

We have the capabilities to build an entire fleet of Submarines - but the Government/Military personnel are NOT capable.  Tongue

We don't really need French, Nipponese, Germanic input (beyond manufacturing some parts).
If only the Australian Govt/Military - looked into our own 'experts' and supported them towards the military 'needs' - I'm sure our best minds could come up with Subs far superior than anything 'out there' currently.

We built a fantastic submarine for 'Science'.
I'm pretty sure we could do so for Military as well.
But, of course - Australia no longer relies on 'self-sufficiency'... just ask the Govt.

James Cameron knew better.
So did NASA at one stage.

Seems everyone believes in us - except our own GOVT
(both NLP & ALP).

While I accept that your sentiment is in the right place, there is a world of difference between designing a submarine to carry one person to considerable depths vertically and a submarine which needs to be designed to undertake hard manoeuvring during combat operations evading enemy ships and weapons, as well as detecting vessels at long range.   Australia has come a long way in the last 40 years since the COLLINS class was first laid down.   However, we still do not have the sonar technology, the weapons systems technology nor the weapons themselves which we would require in a combat submarine.  Nor do we have the propulsion systems nor the battery storage systems which are required.   Submarines are the hardest types of naval craft to get right and while the COLLINS class has turned out better than the media hysteria has claimed about them, we did not have the knowledge or the ability required to build them back in 1987.

I understand what you're saying Brian and I agree to a certain extent. But we have the 'design' ability to build 'better' Subs. We can outsource the 'weapons' factor and all the other military bells and whistles of their own desire.
But in regards to the main concept of the Submarine itself - we can do it, if given the challenge and chance.
