Favourite Beach in Aust
Nov 21st, 2018 at 8:56pm

...and why?

Top 5 Beaches welcomed.

Long ago my favourite beach was Scotts Heads: both the ig long one and the little one on the other side of the head-point. The Little Beach was where I saw my first 'naked woman' at a tender age: she walked up out of the water, fully attractive and her towel/belongings just happened to be a few metres where I was sitting. The long beach has since been gutted by a massive storm about 10 years ago. The sand is gone from the main area to be dumped all around the headland, which really killed off any good snorkling aspects.

So these days...
1. Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay: whitest sands in the world and packed with tourists just taking photos. But a good dive, swim, snorkel spot and the place where I nearly died when I first began diving.
2. Long Beach, Pambula: popular with the Surf scene and a not tooo long a walk along the entire length. Neat flat conditions for swimmers, kids also. Visually fantastic as when you get in the water and turn around - NO big block mansions, high-rises, etc. Just nature.
3. The Coorong, South Australia: amazingly long region of beach that really does make one feel 'away from it all'. Of course, I didn't like the numerous 'snake' trails all over the sands. But the beach and surf were well worth it. A great part of Australia.
4. Leeton River Beach: ok, not the best, but for something along a river (Murrumbidgee) its a fantastic spot of respite on a hot day. This country should do more of these. Wild birds, clean water, gum trees and sunsets. Menangle Park Beach, Simmos in Macquarie Fields, etc - all good for what they are.
5. I won't say where (because I don't know where and it was pure 'fluke' in turning up there) - but it was up in the New England area. It was along a river of crystal clear delight. It was full of hippies and naked women frolicking in the water. Very well shaded by surrounding trees as it snaked and weaved through the forest. It was a surreal experience and I knew I was a Stranger in a Strange Land indeed. Oh - so many breasts with erect nipples everywhere!  Shocked

Oh totally agree there!
There was even one on the dessert at the Coogee Bay Hotel.

How funny was that, and not even an Indian!

Being a knowledgeable bloke about the coast, there would be some things you'd appreciate about Bondi.

Firstly, the NE/SW direction and the headland creates a perfect kiddies corner up north with no dangerous rips and the swell wrapping around the headland.

As skill levels progress the surfers can move down south. There's actually good spear fishing and you only have to swim 50 meters off the north point for kingies.

As for turds in the water, that only happens once a year when Greg comes to visit from Perth.

Is this clean enough for you?

So many beaches to choose from, for mine its the surf beaches, like Noosa, lennox heads, kirra, Burleigh heads, Crescent heads, Byron bay, then head West to bells beach and surrounds and even further West to the west coast of SA and the desert type surroundings, the harshness, the dunes and the big thick swells, good for the soul, and then off to Margret river, arriving at any of these beaches with a light offshore and a big swell gets the heart racing.

My favorite Beach, note the dunes in the background.

Nice pic.
Reminds me a bit of the Coorong S.A.

So you like the Eyre Peninsula beaches too?
I like that part of the country.

Scotts Head is really nice to sit on the headland and watch the dolphins but just down the road a bit is my favourite.

Grassy Head.

Oh the memories.
My entire holidaying youth was spent on Scotts Heads: sitting on the grassy hillside looking out to sea, long ago when it was just a dirt goat track to the top - before all the neat steps and viewing platforms.
I used to rock-climb all around the 3 beaches there.
Snorkel around the heads.
Play Galaga/Space Invaders in the Milk Bar

Grassy Heads - right down to South West Rocks.
Macksville, Nambucca Heads. Such a wonderful area.

I spent many years living in the area and miss it.   Having occasional thoughts of going back.  We'll see.

Windsurfing on the Nambucca as well.  *sigh

You should go back.

I was up there a lot from 70's to early 80's.
Then returned briefly around 2003.

It has changed a lot.

I live way down the south coast now.

Been thinking about it.  Sydney is getting worse and worse.  I feel like an alien here now.

Might look down the south coast a bit but I have always been a north coast gal and it has been calling to me lately.  Easy drive to Sydney when I need to be there too.

Yes - I was living in the Shoalhaven for about a year n'half (looking after a mates house n' dogs while he was down in the Antarctic).
I live much further down now - in the Sapphire area (where Ye Grapplar used to live).

Yes - leave Sydney. It's not like it was (nor is Melb).
Head north or where-ever. Just get out of Sydney.
You deserve a 'quality' of life that Sydney just can't offer anymore.

Where's that?
Has it changed like Albany & Byron Bay? From a nice place for locals, to a tourist hotspot where locals are shoved aside?

Yes - nothing beats a deserted majestic beach.
Camp on the dunes, small fire crackling - embers rising up to dance with the stars.
Ambient music in the background of the immense silence all around.
The smell of the day's catch cooking.
The timeless moment of being away from it all.

Back in the day my fav thing to do was go for a swim with flippers when a big cyclone swell from up north was pumping.

As a breaking wave is coming at you, swim down to the bottom then at just the right time, swim up as fast as you can and time it so you pop out the back as close as you can without going over the falls.

Time it perfectly and you can freefall off the back of the wave.

This one?
Tourists/Tourism can spoil and 'local' vibe, especially if the area has 'sold out' to the Tourism to allow them to run the place and the locals just become 'peasants' to the cause.
Albany and Byron Bay are two good examples where 'locals' have been pushed aside and the towns are now 'owned' by Tourists.

This picture probably does it better justice. It is North facing, protected, beautifully clean, white sand and a large beautifully treed, shady grass border to kick back on if it gets too hot. Only down-sides are no waves at all (it's not that sort of beach) and tourists can kill it over summer.

I'm a little technically challenged. Dont know why the image doesn't show on site (wrong format?). Just copy/paste
Meelup is in Dunsborough, which is Western Australia's actual version of Byron Bay.

You click on 'insert image' and then press 'choose file' under the emojis and your choice of pic will come up to be opened into space between brackets ] [

Byron Bay, like Albany - was once a great place to live and visit.
Now its just a place to visit and spend money for Tourism.

Byron Bay, before the sell-out to the Celebrity trash and cafe latte's. Was one of those typical great 'quiet' places where people 'lived' and visitors 'got away from it all'.
Now its just a congested, tourist-boutique-cbd for real estate agents and developers. Tourists pile in to bump shoulders and not talk to each other.
The 'locals' put up a fight, but like in Albany - they were shoved aside and made 'peasants' to the new 'owners' of the town. Most left, some stayed and grovelled for the tourist dollar.

Hyam's Beach is another, 'sold out' by the local Tourism Industry and Australian - for being the 'Whitest Sands in the World' and the locals are now 'crushed' by an influx of crazed, selfish, spoiled, inconsiderate number of Tourists in their thousands trying to get their 'fix' of being on the 'scene'. Local's driveways are blocked and used, congestion is a crawl even less than 1st gear in a manual. Obnoxious tourists disregard all else in the priority to do a selfie on the 'whitest sands'.  Roll Eyes

It's sad when the once 'relaxing' and 'sociable' beach-side towns of small houses, caravan, camping parks, BBQ areas and the odd General Store, Milk Bar - have been over-developed by high-rise, cafe latte's galore and a need to turn a 'Holiday' into another 'Money-maker' (Job!) area.

Sad to see some of the best coastal strips and spots that would accommodate everyone with a view, be covered and blocked by Motels and High Rise apartments for the far less amount of people who just want to 'own' and 'dominate' the view.

I love places where you can go into the water and turn around and just see trees and blue sky. It truly is 'getting away from it'.
But now - such great spots are being swallowed by developers and NLP/ALP's desire just to make jobs and support an Economy that pays them... where you turn around in the water and see people hanging their washing on a balcony, looking at you with binocs from 4th Floor and cars looking for a parking space.

Embarrassed to say, but I've never been to Blueys Beach.

What's it like?

I'm embarressed to say that I went to Bondi Beach just once only.
Back before the TV commercialisation of the Beach via Bondi Rescue, etc.
Bondi was Australia's biggest Pedo and Sex Industry pick up joint. The whores of the Cross had nothing on the whores who laid on the beach in all but a bikini in regards to making a living. Hence why the 'Cross' is no longer really much anything anymore.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

Great Keepel Island, despite the place not having a great national reputation, does have some nice beaches.
