Philperth, I'm having problems trying to get my head around this, why the police were obviously being attacked by a tall knife wielding maniac, in public, as I could not understand, why the offender wasn't shot at earlier, the 1st police office was trying to defend himself, with a useless baton, the 2nd officer just hanging back, watching...it felt so wrong and I think, this video will make our police/law, look weak as pizz to the rest of the world. We must be pushovers in Oz?
Sickening to watch, and more sickening, that police have been made so, as one poster put it, pussified.

It's not a question of one or two police officers being judge, jury and executioner, this looked clearly, a case of police officers needing to defend themselves and to save others in public from any attack. Isn't that what the police are supposed to do, serve and protect? Even if it means having to shoot the perpetrator, after all, there is no mercy of any kind instilling terror in a country that allowed that attacker to be free, yet that freedom was not respected.

Confirmed that the terrorist tried to light gas cylinders in the back of the car by using a petrol bomb. Obviously he wanted to blow up Bourke street. He was a person of interest to the terrorism authorities yet they allowed him to roam our streets.

Karl Quinn has another eyewitness account of the attack from a member of the community Melbourne West Police Station, where those who witnessed today's attack are telling police what they saw.

Jye Rodto says he saw a man run up to the ute when it came to a stop behind a tram on Bourke Street, and then throw some kind of explosive device through the passenger-side window.

Mr Rodto said the driver of the ute leapt out of the car, which then exploded in flames as it rolled down the road.

After gaining more information on the attacker, police are now treating this as a terrorist incident. They say he and some of his family members have been known to state and federal police.
